While I haven't been on the bike much I was keen to do this race and there was going to be a good turnout to make it interesting. I worked the night shift and was going to just hang out at Maccas and drink coffee until the 10am start, but then decided to head home for a quick 90min sleep.
The handicap race had about 7 start groups. I was off 17mins with two groups behind including scratch off 21mins. I felt the lack of racing or even bunch riding and didn't feel that comfortable. Just after Glengarry, Rob Monk from Warragul clipped my back wheel and I got to hear the terrible sound of flesh on bitumen. I, and two others stopped while the rest of the bunch continued. There were a few cars around and Monk was pretty shaken so they decided to take him to hospital.
I got back on the bike in time to jump into the scratch group. Battled to stay on the back to the finish but never challenged in the sprint. The race ended up being won by the zero group and Scatch never caught the group I started with.
While I felt like I was working hard, I hope my HR data is faulty as it was up around 250bpm for the first 30mins.
The aftermath- Monk is in hospital with a broken pelvis. bugger. And on the ride home after the race another bloke I know from Warragul had his front forks snap and he's also in hospital. Not a good day.
