O race (Forest O) 1:48:55 [5]

Was quite pleased with this run on the whole. Got the train down as I wanted to do the Brown and the course was a long way (and the weather was a bit grim too). That meant I was running ok, but still tired a bit towards the end. Was walking up the steep stuff.

Sloppy start to #1. Unmarked paths in the woods threw me off. But I should have been taking a proper bearing.

Ended up on the wrong path going to #3. Didn't have good map contact on the steep bit. Got a bit lucky finding it after I overshot.

Started executing much better after this.

Went over the hill after #16, might have been better to go round.

Ran round the hill to the east after #19, but looking at the map again, I think it might have been better to go over the hill.

After #22 was following someone at about the same pace, so was led into the controls after that. Mostly in good map contact though.

Should have had the confidence to follow the stream east out of #27. Would probably have been quicker than hauling myself back up the hill again.

O 1:31:06 [3]

Was running well for this. My 2 midweek runs were strong too. Maybe my mojo is back after getting ill in November again.

Overshot the counting to #3 and then struggled to relocate with lots of pits. Sloppy to #4 after I made a mess of #3. Again lots of detail on the ground.

Had a good bearing to #7 but as I approached the control. What was on the ground looked nothing like the map. I was looking for dark green to my left and scattered trees ahead. Saw a patch of what looked like dark green to my right but must have just been mapped as trees. I adjusted my bearing. Even relocating a couple of times, I only found the control by a search of the area.

Made a mess of #13. As I crossed the paths, I saw what I thought was the shallow, marshy, re-entrant that the control was in. That re-entrant wasn't mapped as marshy though and so I was one south of where I wanted to be. Was very confused. Finally found it by marching back up the stream. Only after I finished did I realise what I'd done.

Charlotte passed me here and she led me into most controls after that.

Really struggled matching the map to what was on the ground. A frustrating run.
