Orienteering race (Australian Championships) 2:00:04 [5] *** 17.0 km (7:04 / km) +300m 6:29 / km
spiked:25/30c shoes: VJ Interator 2010

Slap Up Creek.

First few controls were ok, just a little hesitant to no.5 but Patrick Gunnarsson had caught me 2 min to by no.6. We both lost 30 secs on no.7 and then 3 min on no.8. We took different route choices on the long leg to no.10 but saw each other again. Then again different route choices on the next long leg to no.12.

On the way to 12 near the marshes I came across a tiger snake and then 100m later whilst jumping over some fallen timber almost landed on another tiger snake. There were a few warnings that tiger snakes were prominent in the area but didn’t think about it until I saw one. So for the next 30 min I was so wary of tiger snakes I couldn’t really gain a good speed or concentrate on my nav.

Then by no.20 a group including Shep, Macey and Devil caught me up and as I was latching onto the back of the group I sprained my ankle and had to stop for a while and then walked to no.22 and 23. Dave Meyer had caught me by 24 and managed to do the rest with him.

One Oz Champs to forget for so many different reasons.

Orienteering race (Aust Sprint Champs) 18:26 [5] *** 3.5 km (5:16 / km) +50m 4:55 / km
spiked:22/27c shoes: Brooks Trance 10

Good little course around Canberra Grammar School with lots of short legs amoungt the technical detail. Didn’t lose any large chunks of time, maybe 5-10 secs on a number of controls. As usual with sprints just too hesitant, I should learn to just be more aggresive. Result wasn’t as slow as the run felt with 20th place in elites, 3 min behind the leaders. And more importantly, 1 sec ahead of Steveo to be the counting Stinger :)
