Note
(rest day)

Harvest Home 5k
An unintended rest day. Body felt pretty beat and dehydrated after yesterday's run. Energy was still low when I woke up this morning, so decided to do the smart thing and skip the 5k and planned sprint training. The weather wasn't that great anyway. At least it finally rained!

Running long (Road) 1:46:10 [2] 12.54 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: Pearl iZumi Float

80F, overcast, humid - Group run from the Spot. There's supposed to be 2 loops. 1st is 12-14mi and then a 5mi 2nd loop. I had intended to do both, but as I was climbing thru Eden Park my legs were telling me to cut it short. I think they were feeling the effects of a hard effort week. Speed was kinda all over the place - a product of running with different people. Although most of the run was done at an easy pace, I probably had about 19min at mara to tempo pace.

A bit of a warm up run before the race, truncated.

Harvest Home Chipotle 1-mile Run - Cheviot, Ohio.
Low 90s, partly cloudy - The race was to be the kickoff for the Harvest Home Parade, so a good crowd had already lined up along the entire route before our start. Thought I'd be more nervous but that was never the problem. Likely, it's because the race was small (only 50 runners), plus my legs were still feeling the effects of Tuesday's Yasso 800s. So expectation was low. I had no idea what kind of time I am capable of running. I've raced some 1500m on track a long time ago, but never the miler.

Anyway, it was a rolling course, with slightly more ups than downs. As always, I started out slow off the blocks, then gradually picked off the runners in front. Was probably 6th or so at the half-way point. Used the uphill to catch up to a couple more before the turn onto North Bend, then finally moved into 3rd at ~3/4 mark. The leader was way ahead, but 2nd place guy looked to be fading a bit on the hill. I tried to chase him down, even thought I made some progress until he unleashed a kick for the finish. Winner (Brian List, Earth Drummer) was 4:32, :20 clear of Mike (Mel's brother). I was another :07 back. A 5-yr old girl ran it in 11:38, which I thought was rather impressive.

For my 3rd place effort, I got a $10 certificate to Meters & Miles, plus another beer glass. :)

Before and after.
After the race, we sat in Harvest Home Park (Fairground) to eat (Chipotle, LaRosa's), drink, and chat. We also watched part of the parade, which lasted for almost 3hrs! Then we walked the mile+ back to our cars by the start. This really helped loosen up my legs a bit.

Don and I then drove to Nippert and watched UC demolish OSU Beavers in the 2nd half. Of course, more walking was involved!

Running (Road) 39:48 [2] 4.42 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: Pearl iZumi Float

95F, sunny - Group run from Crossroads. Tonight's menu is track work, so we use the jog over to Norwood track and back as wu/cd. Temperature at the start was high, but it actually didn't feel so bad today.

Speed/Track intervals (Y800s) 29:50 [4] 8.0 km (3:44 / km)
shoes: Pearl iZumi Float

Yasso 800s. Ran with the 1st group, who did 10x800m with 90s rest. I set the pace for the guys at 3:00. Somehow the first 200m was always 2-3s too fast, but overall I pretty much ran them all in 2:59 +/- 1s. Happy with the time and consistency, considering I ran on lane 2, and yelled out splits at every 200m. :) My quads threaten to cramp up on the last 2, and once again during cool down, but it was never bad enough to stop me.

Running (Track) 18:56 [1] 0.65 km (29:08 / km)
shoes: Pearl iZumi Float

Recovery inbetween intervals. Supposed to be 90s each, but since the last person in the group was running 3:20-3:25, the 90s clock starts when he finishes. So really, I was getting 1:50-1:55 rest. Oh well.
