Run to the pub half marathon! I think technically this is my half marathon PR. The YMCA half I did last fall was 1:38:54, but also my watch clocked it at only 12.87 miles. Today’s race was definitely the full half. And my overall pace was faster today, so I’m going to claim it as a new (albeit slower time) PR.
The start was hectic. The bathroom line took FOREVER, and then once we were finally through all of that, the race started in 30 seconds. I had to drop off my bag AFTER the starting line, and the bag drop was in the opposite direction that the course turned. Whoops.
I started out at 8:00 pace, which felt good, and I kept feeling good so was dropping progressively faster splits until about halfway. I knew I was speeding up and tried to slow down but mentally I was in it to race and knowing that there was still a while ahead of me wasn’t enough to keep the pace more in check. But it never got to an unreasonably fast pace, and even when I started running out of gas near the end (really slowed down on the minor hill mile 9-10 or so) I was able to pick it back up a bit.
About at mile 8, the course converged with the 10k course, and I was weaving my way through lots of walkers and slower runners. That was frustrating, and poor planning on the organizers’ part.
I was REALLY surprised that at all of the aid stations, they only had water. I’m typically a tiny-sip-of-Gatorade sort of racer, so I was a little worried about really hitting the wall before the end due to lack of fuel. That didn’t happen, but a note for next time: make sure to know what will be offered at the aid stations and what I need to bring for myself.
Overall though, a really fun and beautiful course! It was about 90% downhill, which was very nice. I definitely did better than expected, and I’m happy with it.
