Brought the NZ junior orienteer in town (Daniel) with me to meet Barb & crew, and to help out with the Navigation Games Halloween orienteering. It was awesome to see all the kids doing the little Halloween O, and so many of them were saying that they had tried orienteering in school, so they already knew what to do in order to earn their candy. As these kids get older and Navigation Games continues to expand, Cambridge will be having an orienteering boom in a couple years, and it will be the most exciting thing to witness. Major props to Barb.

Running race 30:30 [5] 6.0 km (5:05 / km)

Club running regionals, in NY. It was extremely rainy, cold, and windy, on a grass course which promptly turned to mud and deep puddles. The men raced first, and when they finished, they were at varying stages of mild hypothermia. Thankfully, we were able to be inside out of the rain in an undercover soccer field. However, the bubble wasn't heated, and they were so concerned with keeping their facility spotless that all runners had to hose off with cold water after racing and before going inside to get on clothes. Not good.
The women were all dreading the race, having seen how bad all the men looked coming in afterwards. Our race was delayed by 20 minutes, but it went on, and it was the absolute muddiest, coldest, most slippery race I have run in. Spikes were a necessity, and being a skier and an orienteer, I think I had a huge advantage. I slipped several times, but I was able to regain my balance without going down completely. On some of the steep mud slopes I walked for 1-2 steps because running would have meant a certain fall. Obviously, people were way off of their PRs today, but compared to the rest of my team, I did extremely well.
Honestly, the race wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be, and I think the conditions played to my advantages. But man it was cold afterwards. Also, our team did poorly in general and we did not qualify for Nationals :( We already have airline tickets, so we'll still go, but race in the B race, and we might have to pay for the trip ourselves now.

I skipped Cambridge training today because a Saucony rep was coming to club running practice, and we could try out shoes and receive a 50% off coupon afterwards! I tried out a couple pairs of shoes, but apparently the deal was NOT actually a coupon, but after 5 days of testing shoes, you can get a free pair of shoes. Which is great and all, but I doubt this rep is going to come back 4 more times. I feel cheated and betrayed.

Back-to-back intramural sand volleyball games. The other teams showed up for once, and we had two good games. We won 2-1 in each, so we're moving on to playoffs! I really like volleyball, and I'm decently ok at it. I wish I actually played it. If anyone is ever looking for someone to mess around on the (sand) volleyball court with, I'm down.

Tempoed the Mission Hill 5k, emphasizing the last mile of the race since that's typically where I start really dragging. This was such a winding, up and down, rainy course, and if I had been actually racing I probably would not have been happy with it at all, but as it was, I wasn't racing, and it was a fun time! It was a good tempo.

Orienteering 14:54 [1] 0.74 mi (20:08 / mi)
9c shoes: Saucony Guide 10 (Blue)

Compass/distance estimation exercise by Ethan at Magazine Beach. The control circle and surrounding area was whited out, and there were on average 3 streamers in the vicinity of the control. The goal was to get to the right control, using precise compass and distance estimation. Each streamer was labelled with a letter, letting us know if we made it to the correct streamer.
I originally thought I only got 3/9 controls correct. With an average of 3 streamers per control, and 27 total streamers for the 9 controls, that would be equal to random chance. Thankfully, I had mis-remembered 2 of the streamer letters, so I actually got 5/9 correct. Not much better, but better than by chance! I've always known compass isn't my strong suit, but yikes, clearly I should work on this more.

I'm bummed I missed my workout yesterday, but this long run was really really nice to get in. I looped around the Charles from Mass ave to Harvard, and followed the Fens for a bit ln the final part. I brought a friend, and we were kind of moving.

Soccer 40:00 [3]

Intramural game. I had a pretty snazzy header off of a corner kick which hit the wrong side of the post. It would have been such a pretty goal! Scored a little later off of another corner, but it was a thigh trap thing that was much less pretty.

The plan was a workout during my brief break between classes today, but as I was on my way home to get changed and head out, I saw 12 cop cars speeding by. This was a cause for minor concern, since I definitely had not seen all of the police who were responding to whatever was going on. I did some quick internet research, and I found reports of an active shooter at Simmons, which is close enough that I decided to nix my run. I found out at my EMT class that apparently, it was just balloons popping, so everyone is alright.

Note

I've been recruited to help Navigation Games teach a weekly after-school program with Evalin for 6 weeks. Today was the first day, and I had no idea what to expect. I felt a little bit disorganized, since I really had no clue what was going on. Next week I'll be picking up some middle school students from another school, so I need to figure out the details of that to feel a little bit more ready going into it.
There were only two students today, but I was impressed with how well they picked it up. One of them mastered keeping her map oriented extremely quickly.

Climbing 50:00 [2]

Nothing more than V1 today. There was a really fun-looking V2 that I tried though. It's relatively new, so I'm confident I'll be able to get it before it's gone!

Cycling 29:04 [1] 4.45 mi (9.2 mph)

My phone died with 20% battery while at Danehy. This was my first time at Danehy, so I didn't really know how to get back, but I managed to make it with only a few not-too-wrong wrong turns.
10 PM

Cycling 12:01 [1] 2.08 mi (10.4 mph)

I was all over the place today, and I have concluded that I much prefer short (~15 minute) rides through Boston to longer (30+ minute) rides, especially if the shorter rides are not at peak traffic hours.
I saw a skunk today on my ride home! A couple weeks ago, I saw a fox. Who would have thought that there'd be this much wildlife in the city at night?

This was my first club running practice of the season! I can only go on Mondays, and I was sick the past two, so it was really nice to see the team again and run with friends. My stomach was a little off since I wasn't eating great with stressing about my 3 exams today. But hey, I got through the exams and the run too. 2 more exams left this week!
