Back somewhat improved today - although sitting at certain angles still sets it off a bit - and a good (and elongated) night's sleep seemed to do the trick for making me feel a fair bit better more generally. Hopefully I'll be able to get out tomorrow, or at worst Wednesday. (This morning, with dewpoints near 20 - something abundantly obvious in the state of my shirt after walking the ~30 minutes to WMO - might not have been a bad morning to miss, although I expect we will have similar in Italy).
Good to reacquaint myself with various Geneva quasi-colleagues (including one who I thought I'd missed because he was due to retire on 30 June, but that's been delayed a couple of weeks). Even got to see distant thunderstorms - not a common experience for me here (although they certainly have been elsewhere in Switzerland) because I'm not usually here in summer, and when I last was it was for the 2019 heatwave - though our part of Geneva itself only got a few drops.
Saw a couple of posters today advertising a demo of "international solidarity against the WTO", which indicates that there are still people around who think that the WTO does something (its ability to do anything was crippled by the Trump administration vetoing all new appointments to its dispute-resolution bodies, forcing them below quorum, and as far as I know that hasn't yet changed). I haven't yet been up to the square outside UN headquarters to see who's camped there this week (given that it isn't
19 November I assume there is not a giant inflatable toilet).
And I haven't heard yet of any Territory Day crackers-and-clackers action this year, but if there's an Alaskan equivalent of the Northern Territory News they would no doubt be having fun with
this incident report from Friday:
"A caribou was obstructing the runway at Point Thomson Airstrip in Deadhorse. Airport personnel attempted to drive wildlife off the runway using small explosives deployed from shotguns, known as Bangers. In the course of operations, the runway was set on fire. The local fire department arrived on scene and extinguished the burning runway".
