Real Orienteering race (Rotonui) 44:00 [3] 4.2 km (10:29 / km) +111m 9:15 / km
shoes: Blue innov-8

Birthday. Mass start race in technical farmland, an unfamiliar experience. Very warm with no water on course which was probably to my advantage. Held onto Geoff and Ted for two controls and then had to navigate. First top 10 of carnival... actually eight. Suggests my strength is fitness rather than navigation. Bad news as i know i am not fit.

Real Orienteering race (Smedley) 1:06:00 [3] 6.1 km (10:49 / km) +158m 9:35 / km

Was expecting a simple spyr gully farmland day but instead ran a physically tough course criss crossing the main gorge. Finished 14th due to bad route choices based on terrain ignorance. Good educatiinal eexperience.

Tongarriro Crossing to half way and return with a detour to climb mt tongarriro itself. Blue skies and strong winds. Magnificent scensry but not a wilderness experience.

Walking 7:30:00 [3] 14.6 km (30:49 / km) +1400m 20:50 / km

Mt Taranaki. The ascent was tough and we didnt climb the final twenty metres from the crater due to the gale force winds. The descent was epic with people being blown over by the wind. Grit and snow driven in eddies just added to the experience. More exciting than thw world cup. Both glad to get down.

Totally fluffed the first leg and was only saved by a chance enciunter wwith the second control. Once that control was dispwnsed with i spiked the rest. Great area but 5000 scale maps take just a little early adjustment.

The orienteering challenge was up a notch today. Gettiing closer to rowdy flat. Apparently it will be tougher navigation tomorrow. My race was over at the tenth control today. I led a pack into a control and cursed when i realised my SI stick was missing. Wemt back on a forlorn quest in the scrubby dunes and actually found it. Lost 15 minutes so took it eaasy and made fewer mistakes. Great area. Wehad apreview last night in the final scenes of the two towers on tv last might. A magical place.

A Gentle introduction to the Manuatu dunes. Only a couple of errors. Very enjoyable orienteering. I think i could take more of this.
