Real Orienteering race (Myers Creek) 55:25 [3] 7.16 km (7:44 / km) +180m 6:53 / km
shoes: Speedcross 7th pair

Bendigo Sort on Myers Creek with Julie as setter. I was pre-event "controller" and Covid cat herder at the event. A pre-event run of course 2, with course 3 controls thrown in. The aim was to turn on the boxes and check the sites. So the time is not as bad as it looks. Same for distance.
I always thought of this small area as rather uninteresting, but with the orienteering starvation, many people thought it was top quality.

Running 54:53 [3] 6.68 km (8:13 / km) +60m 7:52 / km
shoes: Speedcross 7th pair

Terrain running with low key mapping in the Wellsford. Discovered a mine shaft, a rocky ground area, a cliff and three boulders. Only slightly more contours. Slow running because when you hit some green out there, you know its only a short while to get out the other side... actually, maybe it is a long while. Quite a long while. So looks like some green needs mapping.

Real Orienteering race (Korong Spur) 58:35 [4] **** 5.94 km (9:52 / km) +285m 7:57 / km
spiked:7/10c shoes: Speedcross 7th pair

A small wobble on the way to the first, then just a couple of uncertainties approaching 5 and 6. Time lost was mainly on route choice. All the way round the back on 2 would have been better. Lost over two minutes crossing the ridge. More direct on the long leg as well.

Technical training race 34:45 [4] *** 4.23 km (8:13 / km) +52m 7:44 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: Speedcross 7th pair

The trouble with running orienteering events on maps you made is you keep seeing the need for updates. Yesterday it was tracks. Today it was vegetation. OK run, no errors and the gps performed better than yesterday. I think I got the tradeoff between tracks and forest pretty correct. Shortest distance and best time.

Real Orienteering race (Bullock Track) 55:14 [4] *** 6.65 km (8:18 / km) +85m 7:48 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Speedcross 7th pair

Course two of the Bullock Track maprun event. Lessons learnt.
1. Change Saturday entry from course 1 to course 2.
2. This was one of my last maps made with lidar on paper and pencil. Soon after I shifted to tablet with gps. A few of the controls on this course were not visible on the lidar layers so were place by eye on the map. On a low relief area like this that obviously entails some error, because two of the control registrations happened after I had left the feature. I think the errors were about 25 metres. I think in future best to do maprun events with tablet created maps, or otherwise do field visits to place the controls on maprun.
3 A little vegetation growth tuns an are like this from facile into a challenge.
