Aim today was to finish off the Dunolly map. Managed that, until I reached the end of the lidar and discovered right on the boundary the start of a new area of mining detail (see photos). Do I attempt to map it with rough 10 metre contours and gps? Back home, after drafting the final version of the days field work, I went looking at the original lidar files, and discovered I have data for much of the "new" area. So the map isn't finished.

Almost finished map no 2 in the Loddon Shire series. Today was a pleasant stroll through terrain 3 logging gps points and tracks. The basemap is old style photogrammetry. It is the last of this to emerge from Chris Wilmott's machine before it was junked. Need to line up scans of the photogrammetry and aerial images onto a georeferenced base.

There be four types of gold mining terrain - reef, sluicing, surfacing and dredging. Here be all in the one map.

The lowlight of the afternoon mapping was a painful "ants in pants" event which required a rapid de-robing. I removed at least 20 of the blighters. A rather aggressive bunch.

End of year twilight. Chose the 2 hour option. The controls were in two separate bush blocks. Cleaned up the first block. I thought I needed 18 minutes to get a control in the other block. Finished with 15 minutes to spare. Knowing there was no sprint left in me (was there ever any?), I called it a day.

Mapping on new project. Challenge is to map according to the current specification. This area is clearly verging on the limits of what I can map with ISOM17. In particular look at the area on the west of the "map" and the last photograph. This trip was to test the base map (finally correctly georeferenced) and to test whether to continue at 1:15k. So far its been a rate of 30+ hours per square kilometre.

Started what turned out to be one of those pointless Tyrone Thomas walks. Took to the sand dunes instead for an off track walk. Highlights were finding sun orchids and perhaps what might be an abandoned opium poppy mini plantation.
