The ultra sydney and I are doing in June is on the laurel highlands trail. We want to keep most of it new and fresh for the race, but the first 8 miles, known as “gate to 8” is the most grueling with all of the significant elevation gain, and the most aggressive cutoff at mile 19, so we thought it would be prudent to practice. The original plan is I would turn around at 8 to get the car and pick syd up at 19. The snow on the ridge was kind of annoying, so she decided to just turn around with me to get back below the snow line. Ultimately, this meant we did A LOT more elevation than the Striaght line 19 miles, and we still beat the time cutoff by 50 minutes, so I think we’ll be in good shape. I don’t plan to return to practice any more, but sydney might. Legs hurt a lot but I think that was mostly a function of the elevation more than the distance. Overal a good confidence boost
