Orienteering race 1:04:54 [3] ** 4.2 km (15:27 / km) +100m 13:49 / km
(injured) shoes: Very Old with Holes
EVENT: TVOC district event at Coombe Hill, Wendover
COURSE: Green, 4.2 km, 100 m climb, 12 controls
TERRAIN: Mixed woodland (white and green) and rough open
MY RUN: Not so much a run as a hobble resulting from freak foot injury. It felt ok at points but generally it impeded me severely. First control was a nightmare was maybe thinking more about my foot than the map, it should have been an easy one ttoo. Spiked controls 2 and 3 then took the longest alternative route choice possible to 4, it took ages, really need to be bolder and just plunge into the forest which on post-race observation was obvious and not that tricky. Blundered badly at control 5, didn't see obvious control beside path. Impressed myself with control 6 took a bearing with selected catching feature and hit control well. controls 7 to 9 flowed well. Control 10 once again missed obvious control, got frustrated, then took wrong path for control 11 and had to make large double back on myself. Then I realised that I had dropped my control descriptions and panicked slightly about getting the right control.
Overall there were good moments, mixed in with lots of areas which taught me more and which hopefuly I will be better at next time. Need to think more about route choice and take a few more chances, also must maintain concentration.
Foot really painful at the end, not sure doing this event was such a great idea, however did get a great view from the top and as usual had a good day out with the friendly OUOC crowd
RESULTS: 30 out of 40 (Chris M beat me walking!)
