Note

So this concludes my worst training month in 4 years.... Not good. At least last time I had the excuse of a grade 4 stress fracture.

Orienteering race (Garstkloof) 44:25 [4] *** 7.0 km (6:21 / km)
spiked:28/31c slept:9.0 shoes: Salomon Crossmax Red #2

Garstkloof Nature Area. 1:6'000 and 2m contours. New map by Leon vd Westhuizen.

Had a decent training run on the Brown course. Legs a bit tired after last night, but it was fun nonetheless. Nice to run in a new area with a new mapper, fairly close to the old Moreletta Kloof map. Controls were for the most part fairly easy (short grass after winter), only struggling with #6, a cave.

Looks like Eugene was about 2 mins faster.

Orienteering (Ebenezer Dam (west)) 1:15:00 [3] 9.0 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1

Test ran the M21E course. Hadn't seen the course beforehand, so was a nice enjoyable challenge. Didn't push it too hard. Body felt like it was tiring quickly, particularly on the climbs. No real mistakes, only 15m to the right on the 3rd last control.

My expected (and revised) winning time was spot on, 65 minutes.

Orienteering warm up/down 4:00 [3] 0.5 km (8:00 / km)

Orienteering (Stanford Lake) 56:00 [2] ** 7.0 km (8:00 / km)
spiked:40/40c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1

Ran around the majority of the controls prior to the first start for the SA Champs - Middle.

Hot afternoon. The run to the start was the toughest part, sun and uphill. Control placings were all good, moved only 1 control by 2 metres to be a fraction more accurate in the description. Covered 40 of the 48 controls out there.

Body felt okay, but not much speed in it.

Note

Have finally updated my AP, including a quick review and map from World Rogaine Champs 2 weeks ago. Been too sick since then to update.

MTB - O race (Northern Farm) 1:27:14 [4] *** 29.31 km (20.2 kph)
spiked:20/21c weight:74kg shoes: Specialized Epic Expert 2010

MTB-O at Northern Farms. Body was very flat, 6kg underweight, but it came together just in time for the race. Cool overcast morning with lots of rain puddles from a storm the previous night.

Started off decent and maintained a constant pace all-round. Wrong route 3-4, going left instead of right. Then got it right to 5, going on the small track. Very frustrating through to 10 on the small tracks. Still going okay towards the end, but didn't have much speed going up the hill into 18.

Alex (the course planner) beat me by 16 or so secs, so I'll take that. Brian was definitely going to win, until he broke his bike. So I got lucky. Still nice riding and enjoyable. Illness seems to have worked itself out just in time, feeling much better after the race.

Saturday Sep 15, 2012 #

Note

Got sick again towards the evening. Afternoon lunch didn't stay down.

Friday Sep 14, 2012 #

Note

Conditions improving slightly, but that might be because I'm not eating or drinking anything.

Tuesday Sep 11, 2012 #

Note

Have gotten myself onto antibiotics. Has killed the migraine and tick bite fever straight away, but gastro problems still there.

Friday Sep 7, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

After a few days of low energy and swollen legs (low immune system), I got sick.

Took a few days to work it out, but it turned out to be tick-bite fever from mapping two weeks ago. Usual symptoms: body pain, fever, migraine and black bite marks around the ankles. Also a major case of gastro, which maybe isn't related.

Monday Sep 3, 2012 #

Note

And flew back home to SA.

Sunday Sep 2, 2012 #

Note

Drove back to Switzerland
