Note

Spent a hectic weekend organising The 'Uge Salomon 150 / 220 Adventure Race. Went well, but I think I got less sleep than the teams until Saturday night, where I ended up manning the last transition in the middle of nowhere for 22 hours.

Mountain Biking 1:20:45 [3] 27.69 km (20.6 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

0620 - Still a bit wet, so stayed on tar roads again. Rode down Moncor and towards Randpark Ridge before coming back via Sundowner. Av 20.5 Mx 58.6

Sunday Jan 20, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 2:44:37 [3] 51.96 km (18.9 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

0700 - Still not running, so decided to cycle to and from the O' at Brescia House. Went via Alberts Farm and Emmarentia before heading down the spruit to Delta. Started raining heavily after 1hr, so eventually decided to get off the rivers of mud and head direct from Delta through Randburg to Fourways. Some of the roads were still 5cm deep in water. Event was cancelled, so then headed straight home through lighter rain via Moncor. Av 18.9 Mx 55.5

Saturday Jan 19, 2008 #

Paddling 1:32:00 [3] 12.0 km (7:40 / km)
shoes: K2 (Foxbat)

1230 - Finished off the paddle in prep for the Harrismith AR with Eugene in the foxbat.

Note

Spent the day scouting. Did 1 hike that took us about 3 hours. Hilly. Could still feel my stress fracture a bit when it got really steep.

Sunday Jan 13, 2008 #

Paddling 4:00:00 [2] 22.05 km (10:53 / km)
shoes: K2 (Foxbat)

0715 - Paddled with Ryno in the Foxbat in the Harrismith region. We covered part of the course to be used in the Uge 150/220 race. Nice slow pace, beautiful location.

Saturday Jan 12, 2008 #

Note

Spent the day scouting for the Uge adventure race in the Harrismith region. Was on the road from 5.30am to 8.30pm. Went very well, with everything accomplished.

Friday Jan 11, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 1:02:16 [3] 21.5 km (20.7 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

0730 - Quick ride this morning when there was a short break in the rain. Stayed on the tar as I didn't want to spend hours washing my bike afterwards. Loop through Weltevreden Park and Rand Park. Av 20.7 Mx 57.4

Thursday Jan 10, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Still drizzling. Another good reason to take a rest.

Wednesday Jan 9, 2008 #

Note

Wisdom teeth came out this morning. No problems though, am actually itching to go for a ride... but it looks too wet...

Tuesday Jan 8, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 1:30:54 [3] 24.95 km (16.5 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

0645 - Rode around the back of Northcliff hill, to Alberts Farm, then onto Emmarentia and home. Nice morning. Dry for a change. Av 16.4 Mx 58.6

Sunday Jan 6, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 3:21:16 [3] 55.04 km (16.4 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

Long ride with Mac. First did a slow 25min to his house. We then went down the Wilgespruit to Ruimsig and parts of the Ruimsig MTB race route. Then onto Muldersdrift before climbing Protea Ridge on the old wagon track past the mines. Did a few short loops in the 4x4 area before trying the single track along the ridge (not advisable). Back home down Doreen... hit a new all-time speed record of 79.7km/hr. Still can't get to 80km. Too much wind resistance. Back home along Potgieter. Av 16.4 Mx 79.7

Saturday Jan 5, 2008 #

Note

0900 - Organised the AR Club's Adventure Klip Canoe Race down the Klip River. All went well, despite concerns over heavy rain 24hrs previously. The river was very high, but not a full flood as yet. It turned out to be superb conditions to paddle in. Poor turnout however, with only 50 boats and 80 people, quite down from last year.

Friday Jan 4, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 1:53:16 [3] 35.17 km (18.6 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

1630 - Rode to Emmanentia, and down the Spruit to Republic. U-turn and back to Tana before heading home. Was already shattered by 1.5 hours, as I went out hard for the first time. Av 18.6 Mx 58

Thursday Jan 3, 2008 #

Mountain Biking 1:33:26 [3] 25.71 km (16.5 kph)
shoes: Specialized Epic Comp 2006

0700 - Rode to the Wilgespruit region. Area is quite enjoyable at the moment, with good quad bike tracks. Av 16.5 Mx 52.9

Paddling (Dabs TT) 42:20 [3] 8.5 km (4:59 / km)
shoes: K1 (CS Maxi)

1745 - Only did 7 laps of Dabs TT. Plus 1.5 warm up laps. Felt tired and bored with doing the laps. Hopefully that fades as I get fitter again.

Wednesday Jan 2, 2008 #

Note

Another 1.5 hrs on the driving range.

Tuesday Jan 1, 2008 #

Paddling 2:02:00 [3] 20.0 km (6:06 / km)
shoes: K2 (Foxbat)

1300 - Went down the Klip River with Mac in the old Foxbat. Sam and Reenen also paddled with us in their new Renegade Maxi, same boat as I've just bought to replace the Foxbat. We tripped the river to scout for this Saturday's AR Club canoe race. There was only 1 major tree block with a portage of about 1km. Otherwise I snapped the steering cable at Saloojies Bridge. Thankfully easy to fix as it was at the peddle. The boat's getting a bit rusty and needs retirement. Only 1 swim at Dog's Bridge when Mac's split shaft paddle twisted in his hand when bracing to the left. Quite a low water level, so we didn't even get a proper swim... we just waded through the pool on the side of the ruined bridge. Was hot, but we didn't really notice it on the water. Nice to be back in a boat.
