O-Ringen Day 5. Ravlunda. 1:10'000. H35

Bit of a surprise to see continental type terrain in Sweden. I managed to adjust quite well. Had a good start in the 15s chasing queue and soon dropped most people around me. Map was a bit weird going into #3 and I lost time here. Thereafter okay and I got some decent splits, only missing #7 when I didn't go far enough around the contour and lost 30s or so.

In the end did pretty well, 23rd on the day. Probably due to many of the Swedes not being used to this type of terrain? Could easily have found another 5 minutes just on running speed putting me closer to the Top 10.

Pos 23rd / 95.

No overall result for me as I missed Day 1.

Had a shocking start after I misread my start time by 2 mins and got hurried forward in the queue. Rushed the first control and lost some time, and then even more on the 2nd. 3rd and 4th were only slightly better. Then a long leg where I could settle down and after that things went better.

O-Ringen MTB-O Stage 3. Ryssberget. 1:15'000.

Chasing starts, long distance. Lots of people around me, including Brian 55s behind, but 2 people in between.

Poor start to #1 when I stopped short. Brian already caught me by then. Made a bad route choice and changed plans on the long leg to #3. Lost 3 mins+ on Brian and the rest of the group that I was with to start with. Saw them exiting the control as I was cycling in. Settled down after that. Took a less optimal route to #7 and started getting tired by #10 already going into the butterfly, which was on top of the hill. Got to ride one technical section 3 times (and 1 additional on Foot the next day). The last section of the course was flatter and more technical and I got away from 1 Dane, but missed out on 1 more place when I couldn't pass a guy over the last 4 controls.

Overall 32nd after a huge amount of people managed to get themselves dsq'ed on the day. Brian pulled 5 mins on me, but also got Dsq'ed, missing the penultimate.

Once again, a weaker result for a long event vs a sprint. Seems I'm more suited to sprints.

Pos 38th / 77 for the day

World Cup Long Race - Bockeboda 1:15'000

The race went overall well, but I was surprised that my better results were in sprint instead of this long. Got passed at regular intervals, but the competition was going at a notably higher speed than me and I couldn't hold on to most of them.

Started steady, but couldn't find a feint track into #1, so loosing about 15s. Got caught already by +2 just before #2. Took the technical way into #3, which may or may not have been a mistake, then started the butterfly which was very early on in the course. Mistake into #5 when I reversed out of a path thinking it wasn't the one into the control (it was). Next mistake in route choices to #6 where I didn't stick to the plan. Better to 7,8,9, and 10 and the map flip.

Started the 2nd loop badly when I had a head-on with another competitor who was coming down a hill. Bent map board, but otherwise got off extremely lightly but some increbile luck. Nerves were bad for the next few controls, but slowly settled intoa rhythm again. Mess up at #15 before heading off to the common control and then the final section (bad place for a common control).

Fairly okay for the first part. Came into #22 from the back, which apparently was slower. Then overshot a turnoff to #23 as I was getting tired. On the long leg home I got caught up in some bad tracks in the middle, but then at least chose the correct main route on the south side of the map.

Overall okay. Need a lot more practise to refine skills.

World Cup Sprint - Kristianstad University (Nasby Falt) - 1:4'000

My first ever Elite MTBO race, and it went pretty well. Both Brian and I got results a lot higher up the field than I was expecting, leaving a good 26 competitors behind, from a full mix of countries.

From the start, took road to #1, which was the better route. However, control was hidden behind the hedge and I lost about 15s looking for it. Good to 2 (we were allowed to ride x-country) and then okay to 3, where I cut the corner through the forest. Brian didn't and our times are similar. To #4 I cut too quickly maybe and portaged through the ditch? Attacked #5 from behind, which was correct. I x-c'ed to #6 and saved big time. Then some controls with straight line grass riding before I made a mistake going to #12, taking a wrong path, loosing 25s. Easy to #13 where we entered built up area for the first time, then quick to #14 where I had 17th fastest split. Overall my splits positions improved in the urban landscape, even getting 15th spots to #18 and #19, by which stage I was lying 43rd.

I got mechanical problems here when my handlebars started coming loose, but I didn't stop to fix and rather made do with the loose bars. Next few controls I got no problem and finished okay. I probably lost about 20-30s in riding conform as a result of the mechanical, so 5-6 positions.

Overall extremely happy with this debut result. Brian 1 place and 7s behind me.

50th out of 76. +6:17, so 128% of winner.

WOC Relay : Campumulo 1:10'000

Feeling a bit better for this race, but still very low energy levels. I got to sit in quarantine for 4 hours whilst Eugene, then Michael ran their legs. Both did decent results, but I still got mass-started (only a few minutes short) together with China and Hong Kong.

I went further right then the other 2 to #1, but we all came together on top of the big hill and all had the same control. Then lost sight of China for a while, but HKG was with me for the next few controls. Had a big messup at #3, loosing at least 30s, but HKG was following, so no advantage to him. Settled down after that and led everyone into #5 and 6. Then long leg where I was slightly left attacking the control. Through the next loop just didn't have enough speed to drop the two teams and led them in some controls, but I eventually opened a slight gap at #11 even though I was hesitant approaching it. By the run-through, had dropped HKG, with CHN about 30s behind and closing. Got told by team that I had a good elapsed time on both after 2 legs, but I was determined anyway to beat them on the line. Took safe handrails to next 2 controls, with CHN racing neck and neck. He then pulled away on long leg to #16 on the road, but he must as fluffed it again as I got there ahead of him. Led to #17, but he pulled away on the down to #18 to seal the lead. I tried to keep as close as possible into the finish.

In the end we finished 32nd out of 34 with HKG and CHN behind. Big gap to USA SLO JPN and CAN ahead though. Unfortunately no teams dsq'ed, but it was nice to have 2 teams behind us again.

WOC Long Final : Lavarone 1:15'000

I've never arrived at a WOC event with so little prep, even compared to last year's disaster in Finland. No training at all in terrain until I hit the warm-up map 30 mins before my start.

Very long run from pre-start to start on top of a ski slope. Got off to a decentish start. Got caught by Ogden +2 at 3rd control. Then I took the best route choice to #4, the first long leg where +4 caught me. I paced myself well through most of the course and took good or decent route choices. Maybe was a bit slow in map reading to #12. Caught Guy to #15, which perked me up. Then a technical loop that included a butterfly. Managed this well enough and dropped him, with Robbie A coming past at a pace I normally would have easily coped with.

Final section took us to the Arena before a final loop. I suffered badly from the arena onwards, loosing a lot of time. Less ilness, a stronger finish and better speed could easliy have saved me more than 20 minutes and put me near 60th with Eric and Robbie.

In the end, 67th out of 84, with +1:08:41 or 172%. a time of 2h20 would be about 150% which would be more normal for me.

So I have a goal for next year. First, get selected as the RSA runner for Long. Then achieve a Top 60 result.

Went out in the change over 2nd last ahead of HKG, but didn't see them out there. Made a messup to #1 when I stopped short in the wrong open block. Then better for a most of the race. Started getting tired again on long leg to #10. Saw the teams ahead and noted that they were pulling away. It started raining about here and the slick cobbles and marble floors made things interesting. Made a poor route choice to #14. Other then that no problems.

WOC Sprint Qualifications - Burano : 1'4000 map

This race wasn't my focus for WOC, which instead would be the Long Distance. Used it as a good tuning prep and also because it is a WOC. :-)

Started with Marten Bostrom and Guy Szabo. Hit the first 5 controls very well and at good speed and left the Mazzorbo island right behind the others, which wasn't good for Marten (he missed qualifying). First mistake was a weaker route choice to #9, and then started loosing speed from 9 to the finish as I ran out of sprinting gas.

Matjaz Stanfel +1 started catching me here and I pulled him wrong when I made a mistake to #12 where a passageway was weirdly marked. I saw it, but didn't identify it as my passage. From there okay but slow to the finish. Not much more I could have done except be 2+ minutes faster in speed. :-/

Early mistake on the way to #1 when I miscounted road junctions and turned off the first junction instead of the 2nd. Lost about 30s or more. Otherwise only small errors in route choice that could have saved a second or three.

Map exchange after a neutralized road and railway crossing proved interesting as we were suprised with a Micro-O course in an old Roman fortress. I'd read the control description ahead which helped with some decent speed. Nice and complex and a good way to finish the race.
