Back to Kooyoora for the first time in 12 months. No warm up event this time - straight into the first race.
A cautious start, but after fumbling around a little bit on 1, I remembered that the key to running fast here is to keep good map contact and read ahead so that you can run confidently. No problems in the first ten west of the road in the white forest. Kept spiking them and was feeling good. After crossing the road most controls were in light or medium green. Although I lost no more than 30 seconds on any control, I probably lost 3 minutes on the second half of the course through sloppy compass work on a number of occasions. The green was tough, but when I got out in the white, I ran hard without checking my compass and ended up running further and losing time.
Jim gained a minute on a route choice leg to 20 through 300m of medium green. I think he was lucky to find a way through as I have experienced some pretty bad patches of medium green on this map. I think he had been through it before while controlling, so knew he could get through. Even though I lost time, I would do the same again here. It's possible to get stuck in this green and lose several minutes.

Running 1:01:00 [3]

River Run - to MacRobertson Bridge and back. Had to detour at Burnely, as a boat was crossing the pontoon pathway and the boom gate was down.

Running tempo 51:00 [4]

20 minutes threshold run. It actually rained today, and the tan track was quite muddy and wet.
Started at the 500m mark, ran anticlockwise for 10 minutes (2.7km), turned around and ran clockwise for 10 minutes (2.8km)

Running 1:01:00 [2]

Easy run to Fawkner Park. I was a bit late, so had to cut a corner to catch up with the group. Ran down to Anderson St at the end to make up for it.

Running (Recovery) 45:00 [2]

MFR club run from the Trewin residence.
Easy trundle around Rosanna and Macleod with Dion, Nicola, Susannah, Evan and Blair.

Did 15 minutes of weight training after dinner by moving all of Blair's furniture from upstairs into his garage so that his carpets can be replaced.

Queensland Champs Day 2 - NOL 11, ANZ Test
Long Distance race at Maryborough. Hot, 28^.
Started well, got into the 1:15000 map much better than the day before. Was looking at my map lots and reading the compass better than usual. Caught Torgeir Watne 2 minutes at control 6 and was running strongly. Relaxed a little, and lost compass direction while relying on Torgeir and lost 1 minute on 7. Got back into a good rhytm, but suffered a little from the hot conditions in the middle of the course. Lost over a minuteto Blair from 13 to 20 without really any mistakes. It was tough in the heat, but I told myself that it was tough for everyone else, and pushed on. Happy with the second lap, but got overtaken by Jim's strong finish.
Fourth Victorian over the weekend, but got done by Jim and Blair by less than 20 seconds overall. Normally I'd be dissappointed with that, but they have both been racing in Europe for the last 2 months and are looking quite fit and strong.
