Orienteering race 38:18 [5] ***** 5.21 km (7:21 / km) +282m 5:47 / km
spiked:16/18c

Easter Day 1 - Hillview (Sappa Bulga - Dubbo)
A good middle distance course on an intense granite area.
I started well, but chose a poor route choice approaching 3 from the right of the knoll along a rocky ledge, losing 90 seconds. The rest of the course was solid. I lost 30 seconds at 14, stopping on rocks on the NE edge of the circle.
On the way to 15 (135) I saw a control in the circle near where I thought my control should be. The code was 134 - but that was my code for 16! However it was in a gully (not a rock), and I hadn't gone far enough to be 200m past my control, so I carried on another 20-30m to my control. I probably lost 20-30 seconds but it was no real problem to me. The code was wrong and it wasn't my control. The flag was down and there was no SI box, so I assumed that it was for the next day.
A couple of people protested and as a result the courses were cancelled for the day. This was a bit disappointing as it was a World Ranking Event.

Orienteering race 14:50 [5] *** 3.81 km (3:54 / km)
spiked:16/16c

Easter Prologue
Western Plains Zoo

5th place in a field of around 75 (including M20E). A smooth run with no errors. A fast start, holding on well through the middle technical section, and then pushing hard to the end. I caught FatRat 1 minute at the spectator control (which proved to be the most difficult control on the course).
A good start to Easter.

OTrack Race Simulation

Running 50:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:00 / km)

Tapering. Easy run to watch the Corporate Cup.
I jogged a lap and half with a couple of surges, and felt ok.

Note

Sad news. I just heard that Robert Northcote passed away yesterday. He was a regular orienteer from my old club Tintookies (SA). Aparently it was a heart attack while running. I think he was in his late 60s or thereabouts.

Running intervals 1:05:00 [4] 13.0 km (5:00 / km)

With the midday milers, around the tan.
2 x 2000m 7:10 uphill, 6:42 downhill
2 x 800m 2:50 uphill, 2:30 downhill
I felt a bit heavy early on, but got into a better rythm later.

Nice slow warm down at the end.

Catching Features 45:00 [0] ***
spiked:43/45c

3 catching features races.
Pretty clean tonight. No major stuff ups.

Running 37:30 [2] 7.03 km (5:20 / km)

MFR Monday night run.
Slow pace as usual, but as it was still over 35 at 7pm, we had a good excuse this time. Easy recovery style run with Dion, Simon, Reuben, Clare and Nicola. Suse and Jasmine took it very easy.

Club AGM was held after the run. Simon Goddard was welcomed to the committee as OV Councillor.
Also good to see some new members joining the club (or about to). Clare Brownridge, Jo Mitchell, Reuben Smith, Sophie Barker, Simon Goddard to name a few.

Running hills 1:00:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:00 / km)

Semaphore Beach to Largs Bay and return on soft sand. I got a couple of laps of the Snake Pit sand dunes in (while dodging a soccer team doing pre-season training there).
The sand was quite soft/slow with few footholes. I blame a stupid women who was walking around the circuit carrying a backpack and dragging a tyre up the sandhills "bootcamp" style.

Recovery (non running) 40:00 [1]

Swimming at Semaphore.
