State Series #3 Fanklin Gorge
1 minute start intervals after Warren, Bryan, Leon and Jim.
After yesterday I wanted to make sure that I increased my work rate, especially early on. A great start allowed me to catch both Leon and Jim by control 2.
Leon was moving well, but he did slow down quite often to navigate. I also took some better route choices near the gorge and this allowed me to take the lead. On the long leg to 9 I accelerated and opened a bit of a gap, but soon enough Leon was back again. He made a few wobbles which could have cost him dearly had he been on his own.
Finally on the last control he left the saddle in the wrong direction and lost contact with me.
This race taught me that I can push myself a bit harder in the forest, especially when it is easy to run and I know where I am going.
My GPS unit couldn't find the satellites during my warm up, so I couldn't get a tracking for this race. However the heart rate data was quite useful, and shows quite a difference from yesterdays race. Today the heart rate was very stable between 165 and 170 bpm.
Yesterday there were quite a few dips below 160 when my work rate was poor.
