Neil Barr's Ironman / Hagaby / Orientshow race.
Superb event on a super large scale and detailed gold mining area.
Full marks to Neil. Outside of the major championships, this along with the BG 2 day, is the most enjoyable event on the Victorian calendar.
Description from Neil:
"Three mass start races held in complex mining terrain. The first was a 16 variation hageby of 2.1 k. The second was a five loop race, with many variations in the order of the loops. The third was an orientshow format. There were 30 controls in 2.1 kilometres. The course had two 3-loop butterflies. This produced many variations so each runner had a unique course. A feature of the orientshow format is an absence of control numbers on the control descriptions. There is a two minute penalty for each error. Half the competitors made errors, including a number of national representatives. Congratulations to club members who finished this race with a clean slate. For those who want to do the analysis, I have made a list of controls on each course, the allocation of courses to runners, the information downloaded from SI sticks, a map with all controls and a sample course.

And don't forget RouteGadget where you can admit your stupidity after a perusal of the downloads. The usual page link goes to the final race. The other two races can also be found on the gadget."
I was not feeling 100% before the races. My hips/abdomen were still quite stiff, possibly a side effect of a cold/virus that I have had for about a week. I had to warm up for about 10 minutes before I could run without discomfort.
Rather than speed, I concentrated on compass and fine navigation. I really enjoyed the splitting of the courses which meant that I had to navigate on my own for 90% of the controls.
Race 1 (2.39 kms, actual time 14:58)
1 Arthur, Bruce 15:16
2 Neve, Max 16:15
3 Brownridge, David 16:23
Race 2 (2.89 kms, actual time 17:14, actual margin about 5 seconds)
1 Arthur, Bruce 18:01
2 Barr, Evan 18:03
3 Key, Warren 19:33
Race 3 (2.42 kms, actual time 15:16)
1 Bruce Arthur 15:57
2 Jim Russell 17:42
3 Matthew Schepisi 17:48
On the last race, I didn't see the 3rd loopon the first butterfly. I continued to the next butterfly before realising. I had to run back and complete it, and lost about 7 or 8 places. The remainder of the course was very clean, and I managed to run through everyone with no mistakes.
