Orienteering race 38:57 [5] 5.35 km (7:17 / km)

Easter Day 1 - Middle Distance, Benbullen TAS

Best run of the weekend. I started carefully, and did well through the native plantation. I was nervous at 4 - I attacked from the green log piles and should have had to climb about 2 contours. It seem like about 4 or 5 contours until I found the control.
I lost map contact on the way to 6 and lost 30 seconds.
I probably took the slower route choice to 10, losing another 30 seconds.
Otherwise it was a good race and I felt quite strong through the paddocks.
I just finished on the wrong side of the pack. If I was about 90 seconds faster I would have been in the top 6.

Orienteering race 17:45 [5] 3.45 km (5:09 / km)

Easter Prologue, Sprint Distance (Forest) - Trevalyn, Tasmania

Average run.
I lost 15 seconds at 2 getting the angle wrong out of 1. I told myself before the start to check my compass often, but I can hardly recall using it on the course!
I also lost 30 seconds at 7. I stopped early on the women's control. It was on my line and on a rock feature so I guessed that it would be mine, even though it was a little too soon. I checked the code coming out of the control and realised that it wasn't mine. I then ran 31m down the hill to my control which took another 22 seconds.
Several people mp'd here and some complained. I don't think that they should have been re-instated. The guys that stopped to check and find the correct control would have been penalised in effect by about 30 seconds.

Otherwise the run was ok. I wanted to run faster, but my breathing was struggling with the pace and I was spent at the end. I managed to hold off Reuben over the last 5 controls, but I wasn't fast enough today.

About 23rd place / approx 50. I was hoping for better, but at least I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to a park sprint next Saturday. I think I am better suited to them.

Total 45 seconds lost. Should have run 17 minutes.

From GPS data, I took 22 seconds from punching the womens control to then punch 51, plus extra distance/time on the next leg. GPS measured 31m between them. GPS also shows the womens control 20m SE of the mapped feature.

Note

After playing around with QuickRoute's new version 2.3, I came across some cool orienteering software - Mats Treong's DOMA.

Last evening, I spent some time to create a Digital Orienteering Map Archive on my home pc. It is pretty cool. The beauty is that it integrates well with QuickRoute, so it is a great way of recording GPS tracks on an orienteering map.

I got it working in about 2hrs by first installing Apache, PHP and MySQL, and then installing the DOMA application on top of this.

Ideally I'd now like to get it onto the web so that anyone can view it, and allow Orienteeing Victoria members to add maps/routes to the digital archive. I just need a web server host that has PHP and MySQL capabilities. I'm not sure if SocialFX allows this though - I'll have to check with Jono.

Stay tuned. When it is published on the web, I'll let you know.

Running 6:10 [4] 1.7 km (3:38 / km)

A sharpener for the weekend, while still trying to give my body a rest for the upcoming 4 days of racing.

One effort over 1.7km, the first 800 at 3/4 pace, and then race pace for 900m.

A nice day for running. I was feeling good for a change with no injury concerns. Hopefully I feel like this on the weekend.

Note

Sunday's right upper leg niggle, became right groin soreness yesterday and today is sore in my right hip. It may be best to let it settle down today. Anyway, I have a 1pm meeting so it will be hard to get out for a run and get back in time.

Running 35:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)

Monday night run at my house. Everyone in the club seemed to turn up, so we had to cook for 17 adults! At least most of them did RSVP, although some were a bit late. In theory we shouldn't have to host again for another 17 weeks, so we won't have to do it again until about September.

At midday I was in no shape to go for a run. The niggle from yesterday had developed into a sore groin. However sitting at my desk during the afternoon seemed to fix it and I was ok by the time I got home.

The run was dark and cool, so I found a nice bikepath with a flat surface so that no one sprained an ankle just before Easter. A few complained about still heading away from the start after just 3km. The total run was only 7km, so I don't know what the fuss was about.
Tash was driving the pace, and it got a little fast on the way back. I think she was annoyed after tearing a hole in her tights crossing a fence in the dark.

Orienteering 58:30 [4] 9.76 km (6:00 / km) +254m 5:18 / km

Controller - running all controls for the Spring Gully State League race.
Felt fresh and fast, although I did have a slight niggle ni my right groin for most of the run.
