Orienteering race 1:56:09 [5] ***** 15.57 km (7:27 / km) +432m 6:33 / km

WOC 25 race at Kooyoora.
3/4 of the original World Championship Individual race from 1985.
It was an extremely physical race, along with an intense technical challenge. The forest was very slow - increasing thicker bush, wet and slippery rocks and soft and soggy/marshy forest.
The first hour was almost entirely green. I wasn't moving that well, but I kept the mistakes to a minimum. I had a fall just before number 3 and grazed my hand, which unsettled me a bit. David Brownridge was running well and had caught me 2 minutes by number 4. We then went different routes on 4 or 5 long legs, but kept coming out at the control at the same time.
I made a meal of #9. I navigated well to within 150m of the control, but I was put off by the overgrown white forest. I couldn't see my attack points in the now dark green bush. David found it before me and got over a minute lead. I chased hard through a couple of technical controls, and got in front of Jim and David at 12.
My best part of the course was from 13 to 14, 15(WOC start) & 16.
On the way to 17 I had a sandshoe blowout with the sole coming 3/4 off. I tripped and fell and started to cramp a bit. I had to change my running style over the last 2-3km to get home with the broken shoe. I got through this ok, but I was distracted by my shoe and my navigation was sloppy. I lost a little time to 17, but recovered just in time. 18 was not perfect, and 19 was a struggle up hill.
A brutal course, and I was glad to finish on top, 2mins ahead of Simon Goddard and 5 or 6mins ahead of David.
