I invented a new type of orienteering race today: Handicap Street Orienteering!
This involved driving into the car park just as A course was starting. I had to find a park, run to the start, pay, find a card, map and drop off my keys; so the others had about a 2 minute head start.
I don't think I chose the best route either, going to 20 first. I then had problems finding the control near Darling Station. The description was fence end, but there were about 5 fences in the circle and I couldn't make sense of the map. All of the power walkers confused me as they were walking straight ahead without stopping missing it as well. It was obvious enough when I found it, but I'm sure it was on the outer edge of the circle.
By this time, the leaders were probably 3-4 minutes ahead.
There was one more drama - coming around a blind corner, I was collected by 2 runners side by side, and I had nowhere to go but to run into them. Luckily for me, I was able to raise my elbows just in time to avoid myself any damage. I'm glad that there is no trial by video, as I may have accumulated 110 points, but I should get off with a reprimand with an early plea.
The second half was much more straight forward, and I started to pick up many places. I think that I finished about 4th by the end, approx 1 minute behind Bryan Ackerly (who chose an identical course).
