Orienteering race 54:43 [5] *** 10.93 km (5:00 / km)
The Long Distance race was held at Brown's Reef with plenty of spider webs and locusts in the forest. A big field lined up for the mass start with 2 short loops (with 4 variations) before a lengthy common final sector of the race. Uppill, Barr, Reuben Smith, Piotr Czajkowski and Anders Dahlin led after the first lap. Bruce Arthur and Max Neve had a longer first lap, but Arthur rejoined the leading group at the pivot control, just 5 seconds behind the leaders. Uppill, Arthur and Barr started to get away, but Smith
and Czajkowski caught back up on a tricky depression at control 10. Smith, Uppill and Barr then got away by 30 seconds up the hill to 13, but Arthur recovered and stayed in touch. Barr faltered in the last 2kms to leave the race down to 3. Uppill was challenged by Smith, but he appeared to have enough in reserve to take the win by 6 seconds from Smith, with Arthur rounding out the placings 30 seconds back.
