Park & Street Orienteering
2012-13 Eastern Summer Series Event No. 18
Heyington Heights
This is my second favourite Park & Street map (Ian doesn't like scheduling my favourite map anymore as Parks Victoria charges a fee at Yarra Bend Park). I always enjoy running across the perfect lawns at Scotch College. It also has potential for route choice challenges with the river, freeway and railway obstacles.
I had to work really hard tonight. I had built up close to a 100m lead over Andrew Hester between MacRobertson Bridge and the Swan Street Bridge. However, 17 was misplaced significantly and I lost all of that lead. That left me with a hilly 1500m match race against Andrew to finish. I pushed up the hill, but I couldn't shake him. I kept turning up the pace from about 800m out, but he was still there. I had to go full speed from the last control and sprint the last 200m to hold him off.
According to my GPS track, controls outside of the circle tonight were 11, 20, 17 and 12. Those towards the edge of the circle were 10, 15, 9 and 19.
Mason had a good win on E course running by himself.
