Rob asked me yesterday if I was interested in a long ride to Kinglake. It is the time of year where I have no serious races, I was bike fit from Around the Bay, and it was one of the few mornings that the kids had nothing on, so I accepted. I don't expect to be doing long rides like this that often, but October is a good time of year to have a bit of a break from long runs.
This was not as long as last week, but it was a lot more undulating. At least there was no wind to speak of, but it was quite cool.
I had a small mechanical issue after climbing out of Warrandyte. I had a stiff chain link, causing the chain to slip up the hill with each rotation. Fortunately Rob was able to help me adjust the pin on that link and I was on my way again.
On a climb we were discussing bike gadgets when a strange alarm started. After a few seconds Rob identified that it was coming from my back pocket. It was my phone, but a tone that I had never heard before. There were a few jokes that a bomb was about to go off. It turned out that I was under survielance from home. Anne and the boys were using the Find My iPhone app to see my current location. They pressed the "sound alarm" button, and it triggered the tone on my phone. Apparently the boys had a great time following my progress throughout the morning. I never knew that my ride would be that entertaining. They even came outside to meet me at the street corner when I was approaching home!
Kerrin described the final 10km into Kinglake as a nice hill. It was certainly a hill! We climbed from 200m to 550m - enough to raise a big sweat. The trouble was that it was quite cold at the top. We stopped at the bakery for a bite. We started to eat outside, but quickly retreated back indoors.
It was still cold on our way down. We picked up speed quickly on the descent to try to get warm. Once we got down below 400m it started to feel pleasant again.
We were picked up by a small pack at Panton Hill and held on to them until Heidelberg. Rob lost contact with us in Research, but after a couple of calls, we regrouped at Rosanna Rd and finished off through Ivanhoe.
It certainly was a pleasant ride. I missed my corporate marquee and masage at the end though!
