Orienteering race 46:44 [5] *** 8.4 km (5:34 / km) +141m 5:08 / km

Bendigo Bush Classic 10
Mosquito Creek

This was a lot trickier than it looks. The features were very vague, and some flowering wattle made for poor visibility around #6.

I lost my way towards 4 and was lucky to relocate on the saddle to the east of the control.
I didn't understand the contour features approaching 6 and got dragged to the right.
Towards 7 I headed to the wrong saddle as I wasn't certain of my compass. I should have trusted it more, but there were no features for hundreds of metres.

Sophie and Torren enjoyed course 5.
Mason had a reasonable run on course 4, but he had no idea what the control description of "terrace" meant for control #3. He mistook it for meaning gully, but it was actually referring to a spur. I am not sure why the term "spur" or "broad spur" was not used.

I was quite satisfied with my run on an enjoyable course. Especially after running in the morning at Torren's footy match in the cold rain. We eventually got to leave Melbourne at 11:40am, and arrived at the event shortly after 1pm.
I lost around 2 minutes on the long leg to 8 as I was distracted by a large unmapped house and track re-alignment in the gully west of 7. I was completely distracted when I should have read my map and cut the corner more.
I lost 1 minute slipping down the erosion gully climbing out of 19. My shoes were full of mud and were sliding down the only exit that I could see. I had to scramble and use branches to climb, but most of them were too loose.
I then got a bit messy as my map was quite muddy, hesitating for 15 seconds at 20, and losing another 30 seconds at 22 by being too far right.
When I got to 23, I found that the control had already been collected. After 30 seconds to confirm the correct highpoint I ran on.
I know that I started quite late, but surely the controls at the start of the course or the far end of the course could be collected first?
