Surebridge Challenge - HVO A-Meet.

Well, will try to rank everything about the weekend in one concise list:

Weather - Mother Nature trumped all

Terrain- it was as advertised, always demanding.

Company - Good stuff. Lots of ROCers to commiserate with and we met some new O-people. The kids had a great time and met lots of new friends

Courses - Challenging with lots of route choices that I am still second guessing. I don't think I have run so much course in one weekend with so little trail.

Meet - Well run w/o any hitches I could see. Can't wait for the next one!

OK those were all equally ranked at the top of my list. That can't quite be said for the overnight camp - which had bathroom troubles throughout the weekend and then food troubles - especially Sunday Morning - which was the only morning we paid for. It seemed like it was just leftovers from Saturday.

Then there was my performance and my shoes. Saturday was OK technically but I was very tired almost from the start. I would like to think it was the extra 750 feet of elevation, but that is doubtful. Today was miserable. I started fine but boomed #2. The clue indicated a 4m cliff - so I was looking at the toe of some larger cliffs when the control was up on the top of the hill at the toe of a smaller cliff. I had problems at #5 as well, with the approach through a recently burned area. The rest of the run was not too bad, but not real clean. My shoes were the worst part of the weekend. I have blisters galore and I am going to lose two toenails. I thought trail shoes would be better than spikes, but the best choice would have been to wear the best fitting shoes. I spent too much time today thinking about my feet.

Still, we had a great weekend.

Surebridge Challenge - HVO A-Meet

After overrunning #1 by about 100 yards I settled down for a couple controls. Then there was #5. After hearing a couple horror stories about going right around the swamp I feel a bit better for going left - but going up over the mountain sapped all of the energy I had. The tradeoff was a good attackpoint which I took advantage of, but I was pretty tired the rest of the race. Even though I executed, I made bad route choices at #7 and #11, opting for the longer down and around rather than shorter up and over. Finished in the lower half of the pack for overall red course runners.
