Orienteering race 1:09:18 [5] 4.9 km (14:09 / km) +210m 11:39 / km

MNOC Middle Distance, at beautiful Interstate Park next to the St. Croix river. Decided to move up one class to Red, since Green seemed too easy at only 4km. Famous last words...4.9km, 210m climb, according to GPS I ran 6.98km (see below for explanation!) and climbed 234m. Lost a little on #3 by getting too far to the left (unusually for me, I tend to veer to the right). Route choice to #4 was along the path and then due south, as the cliffs made for slow running at least for me. The most interesting route choice was #7, I went straight through as the terrain was surprisingly easy, I suspect many went all the way around (400+ meters longer). For me I think going straight was slightly faster, though not sure looking at the split times.

Lost 8-9 minutes on #9 by failing to see it on the map as it was so close to #8. Didn't discover my mistake until almost at #10, and had to run all the way back. First time for that kind of mistake for me, ever, incredibly frustrating!

Great day overall, I had fun even though I'm no shape to compete with M18s or M35s, running-wise!

On the way back to Minneapolis enjoyed the "Vilhelm Moberg" trail in the towns of Chisago City and Lindström, complete with the roadsigns declaring their sister cities of Algutsboda (hardly a city!! though it was Vilhelm Mobergs birthplace) and Tingsryd, both in Småland.

Orienteering race 1:06:50 [5] 5.0 km (13:22 / km) +185m 11:17 / km

Second day of West Point National Meet, on the 1993 World Championship map at Lake Welch. Fantastic map, super accurate. Really fun race, I felt more tired than yesterday but may be because it was warmer, plus lots of brambleberry everywhere. But mostly because I am not yet nearly in good shape.

Decent run again, I came in 10th on GreenY (5.0, 185m climb), first in M50, and won M50 for the two days combined. Lost 6:37 according to attackpoint, ran 6.29km according to GPS with 223m climb. Veered a little right on #4, no good reason other than sloppiness. Veered right on #8 through dense green and ended up on a small path, luckily, no excuse for it.

Route choice to #9 was interesting, I considered going right on the paths but thought it was too far, and instead went up on top of Jackie Jones mountain. May have been 1-2 minutes slower, but mostly due to my running out of steam climbing the steep hills, had I been in better shape it would be the right choice.

Sprint and goal on the beach of Lake Welch. Overall really enjoyable!
