Orienteering race (9.17km run ) 1:39:17 [3] 7.4 km (13:25 / km) +279m 11:17 / km

WCOC club race at Huntingdon State Park, in Bethel CT. Very hot day, 92 degrees (34 celsius) when I finished the race, incredible for this time of year presumably due to the various hurricanes in the Atlantic.

I had a great race until control #8 - nice running in open forest, good navigation except for #4 where I must have run within 10-15 meters of the control twice and didn't see it, 2.5 minutes. Still not sure how I can have missed it, I kept looping around within 50 meters of it...

But after #8, I increasingly felt pain in my left calf muscle which I pulled on the first day of Letchworth last weekend. It got progressively worse. And the temperature really got to me, started feeling exhausted and walked a lot. Perhaps because I wasn't thinking clearly, my navigation to #9 was dreadful, went on the wrong path for a while, then abandoned my original plan to basically go straight through and instead went on a path, then stayed on that path for too long, then did a parallel error with large loop to the west, then I got confused about where I was and stayed on a winding path when a straighter route would have been faster. The correct route choice was to basically go straight (the path system to the east involved too much vertical), my tired brain abandoned that route choice in favor of a the comfort of a path and I knew it was the wrong choice when I made it... I put it all down to exhaustion...interesting to note that even though I knew I was really tired, I still managed to screw up navigation so badly.

Rest of race went fine except I walked probably 75% of the time. Couldn't lift my legs enough for good running. Probably all the wine I drank last night didn't help either!

Great forest and a fun course, compliments to the course setter. Just wish it had been 30 degrees cooler!
