Note

An incredibly fun weekend overall. I enjoyed sharing the awesome cabin with Kris, Gail, and Peter. Can't wait to orienteer again soon.

8 AM

Orienteering race (Sprint Green Y) 22:25 [3] 1.65 mi (13:35 / mi) +85ft 12:57 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2014)

I've done poorly in the very few Sprints I've done in the past, so I had low expectations for today. But...somehow I ended up getting 3rd place (F45+). Yay!

#1 to #2, I'm not sure how I missed the trail going up the steep hill. Also, there was one control I overshot by about five steps (before I looked back and saw it), but otherwise I didn't feel like I had any serious mistakes (getting caught on the wrong side of a wall, getting stopped by a fence, etc.).

My GPS tracks don't seem particularly accurate (since they show me going through some buildings), but I could have been more straight-line efficient in a few places (e.g. first part of #7 to #8, #13 to #14, and #15 to #16).

FUN!

Orienteering race (Long Green Y) 2:47:20 [3] 5.52 mi (30:19 / mi) +863ft 26:24 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2014)

This was just pretty much awful -- I haven't gotten so totally lost or wandered so much in years. :-\

On top of that, my slow pace is magnified over such a long course.

#1. OK.

#2. I overshot the trail I had intended to take, and therefore I deviated way off the straight line.

#3. OK.

#4. Ridiculous, demoralizing wandering.

#5-6-7. Sloppy.

#8. Since I'm not used to this type of map or terrain, it never would have occurred to me to take one of the trails so far to the right or left, like everyone else seemed to do. I was never fully confident of where I was along the way, so I went very slowly, trying to match up features. Ugh.

#9. TOTALLY lost; bailed back to the trail to try again.

#10-11-12. OK.

Sigh... At least I had a leftover lobster roll waiting for me when I got back to the cabin, along with a serendipitous beer in the fridge.

Orienteering race (Middle Green Y) 59:18 [3] 2.68 mi (22:08 / mi) +240ft 20:24 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2014)

I was having trouble interpreting the contours on the way to #2, and therefore I proceeded very tentatively. Whew -- found it without any wandering.

Bobbled #3, but the rest was OK. I used trails as much as possible, for easier footing. I was a little bit confused getting from #14 to #15.

Was very happy to finish 4th of 8, but would love to someday finish closer to the F50+ pack (Kris, Clare, Mary, Barb).

Had a nice dinner with Kris.
