Orienteering race 16:52 [4] ** 2.6 km (6:29 / km)
spiked:11/14c shoes: Integrator

Sprint in the RIT campus.

Couple bobbles, but pretty good results for me for a sprint. Map at 1:4000, and I still couldn't pick out building issues... I don't think I prefer this sort of event (though I'm not going to avoid them;-). My eyes just don't permit me to see the map clear enough, fast enough.

Good leg at #3, and while I took the long route at 9, I still had a very good leg time. (apparently running the safe route without hesitation was ok overall)

Orienteering race 29:52 [5] ** 3.0 mi (9:57 / mi)
spiked:22/24c shoes: Integrator

Score-O after the sprint at RIT.

Felt good throughout, though not quite as fast as others.

Route: 9-14-6-23-10-11-13-18-22-4-3-21-5-20-8-7-2-16-24-12-15-19-1-17

Think I had a better route choice at than others with 3 spots.

9 first - shorter to grab it before others on the way to 14. it allowed me to go from 3 to 21 and cut off distance vs 3-9-21.

6-23-10-11 - used a through building path to avoid any backtracking from 10 to 23.

2-16-24-12-15 - 12 after 24 avoided climb.

The one bobble area - 22 and then 4. I must have been moving well after 18 because I saw the control "over there" and didn't think it was the next. I finally punched it, but was saying "it's not mine" (but never looked at the code...) So later on I said - hmmm - it must have been - and went on. I then lucked into noticing 4 on the map when I thought I should be heading out to 3. (the plan was to get them in that order, but the mixup over 22 got me off track) Checking my splits - that looks like at least a 3 minute error...

Enjoyed the opportunity to run the RIT campus.

Morning Run (pavement) 24:55 [3] 3.0 mi (8:18 / mi) +35m 8:01 / mi
shoes: Vibram Treksport

So it appears my lower left leg is not as strong as the right, I've got some soreness in the calf which I'm tracing to weakness in the ankle/foot. Need to strengthen the whole area.

Orienteering 1:10:52 [4] 6.7 km (10:35 / km) +325m 8:31 / km
shoes: Integrator

Icebreaker at Mendon, beautiful day and conditions, Red.

Down and up to 3 in a straight line, seemed ok.

Around to 4 when I realized the up and around was as good or better and climbed out. (I hadn't gone down so no loss)

Back up and around to 5.

Around the green (and on the trail) and east along the ruined walls to 7.

Through the green to 8, and straight (except around the hill) to 9.

Misread the control number at 10 (I saw 9's #) and went by it. On the good side, I went 30 meters, realized it looked like it was in the exact right spot, and should be the control and then reread - and felt better. Too bad I've given up my "punch anyway" strategy - I had to go back;-)

11 and 12 went well, and then my second error on the way to 13. I misread the map and didn't see the trail crossing my path, so when I saw it ahead, I thought I must have taken a 90 and hit the trail I knew ran parallel to my path... ugh. Went back, lined up again, and this time I looked at the map as I was going and saw the trail.

Reversed path through 6 to reach 14, 15 & 16 easy enough, and then the big slog up to 17.

Meant to take the reentrant W and down to 18, and headed down around the left side of it, but hit a mass of downed trees. Went around to the left as it seemed less out of the way, and then I seemed to move fast, but came out on the trail well south of 18. On the good side I was moving well and fast, and the trail pulled me right into the control. The green in the re-entrant might have been less fun than I would have wanted anyway.

Was in second, and had to leave for an ultimate frisbee game.

Additions - splits posted - interesting.

I was wondering about 3 - apparently my down and up was quite good - top split on that leg;-)

4 & 5 - apparently I missed the boat on those legs. Would be interesting to see a routegadget, but I don't know that everyone would put in something. (I know I might be challenged for the half hour to do so...)

The other legs that I thought I had lost time on probably had more lost time than I estimated.

I think it was a good first race of the season though. Pavel and Rob S really did well though.
