Orienteering race 1:02:36 [4] *** 6.2 km (10:06 / km) +210m 8:38 / km
spiked:16/22c shoes: Integrator

Powder Mills Park - Green.

Really enjoyed the day, and the results showed it.

1 - slight hesitation after getting up on the ridge near the control to find exactly where it was.

2 - distracted by a ribbon in the train junction above the flag, slight delay.

3 - 4 - 5 - really felt fast on this set of controls.

6 - missed the control in the first look at the map and was headed to 7, and then noticed it crossing the field. took a leap across the drainage stream and only slightly off a direct route.

7 - 8 - good stretch of running.

9 - AP says there's 43 seconds of lost time on this leg, and I just don't see it. I back-tracked to take the bridge across the drainage stream and that probably added 15 seconds in distance. GPS shows a consistent pace, and no real course issues. Climbing the hill at the end was a bit slower - perhaps I "took back" time from the effort of the long run...

10 - maybe I was better rested as 10 was a top split for me.

11 - 12 - very much on, though it seems in hind-GPS sight I might not have been exactly where I thought I was on the way to 12, but I like that I was able to adjust and still find the "what the heck is that upside down L symbol moment". (I knew what the control was when I saw the stand;-)

13 - 14 - control in the pit at the top of the hill - had to look for "there's a pit here" clues in the terrain - and correctly avoided the re-entrant to the left. stayed on the upper trail and dropped right down to 14.

15 - 16 - lower left side of pond and up to 15, back to road and around to 16.

17 - moved left on the hill climb, and ended up in the saddle instead of on top of the hill. like that I was able to deduce where I was and get there with perhaps 30 seconds of error - I often "blow" a correction that close to the edge of the map.

18 - Stayed high and came down to the road - too far to the right. I hadn't checked my path to 19 and thought I was climbing that hill on the other side of the road. better path was along the road and up to the root stock. Would have saved 15s climbing down to the left instead of right - and some hill climb too.

19 - enjoyed this run through the trippy weeds - another fastest split. (Though I did think that if anywhere, this would be the spot where I could trip and end up impaled on a fallen pine tree with branch nubs sticking up...-)

20 - 21 - fine effort down and across the stream on trails. contoured over to the field and up.

22 - see that I veered a bit left on the steep downhill to the control and corrected to it. (strong right foot plant sends me left in some situations)

Probably my best race and finish this season.
