Wrist-based HR be wildin'. I ran at about 90% effort.

Overall, I really struggled to visualize the rocks and cliffs. It's not that I couldn't read them, I just kept imagining what they look like before I ran there and I was always wrong. Even on the slow march up to 15 when I had time to really dig into it, I struggled to match what I saw on the map with what I saw in the forest. They were mapped really well, it was just tough for me. Compass work was better but still not great, outran myself a few times, but also minimized a few mistakes.

Interesting first control.
I knew I was NW on 2 and contoured too late.
I outran myself a little on 5 trying to be clever.
Greg was so much quicker at correcting the mistake at 6.
Didn't think my compass was that bad on 8, but it really was.
Good mistake correction at 9.
Maybe I was seeing things but I could've sworn I saw a reentrant where I turned WNW going to 13 (near 19). Realized the mistake when I saw the cliffs N of me.
Actually didn't know I ran right past 14 until writing this. Slowed down when I should've, but I also should've turned around instead of slowing.

Trail run with new Outing Club members. Cornell might not be letting me go to the team trials. I'll know hopefully by Monday.

Update: we’re going to DC!

Note

Big ol' essay due tonight. No run. Trail run with the outing club tomorrow.

Fencing 20:00 [2]

Feeling pretty lethargic today and got a minor headache, but nowhere near as bad as I was expecting after the stories I've heard about the vaccine effects. it's bad enough that I don't really want to run today though.

Note

Second dose today! Gonna run later and do push-ups throughout the day.

What's this? A training? Uploaded and commented? Are you sure you're on the right log?

Note

Just came back from hiking a snowy, cold "Little" Haystack Mountain. Camping and long hikes are a ton of fun, but now it's time to focus up for the team trials.

Note

So I went to the NRE and had a super sucky first day, but bounced back with an adequate second day despite more mistakes than what I'm comfortable with admitting to, including perhaps the dumbest, worse mistake I've ever made on the second-to-last control. No joke it was so unbelievably bad I'm gonna have trouble falling asleep if it ever pops into my head at night. The optimist in me is excited that I was able to handle two consecutive blue longs and still have near full effort on both days, which is great. Knees are good but not perfect.

Missed the team call because of a 24 hour hike, which ended 30 minutes before the call (I fell asleep immediately after). We went 24 hours and like 10 minutes, covered just under 52 miles, and walked completely along the Finger Lakes Trail. Some of the blazes at the 3-4AM section were completely missing, which was fun. Here's a link to some photos for everyone's enjoyment. I look like a straight marshmallow in some of these, but it got so cold so who cares.

I'm not going to update the log retroactively but I think I've put in plenty of hours in the last almost two weeks. Fencing is now just fencing and no drills, and I've been having plenty of fun with that. Maybe 30% chance that I'll try to do fencing after the class ends, but if the next couple days are really fun I'll do it for sure. I haven't been rollerblading at all since my last log entry, but to be fair it's currently snowing as I write this.

This weekend I'll be going somewhere in NE probably with some friends and we're planning on doing a bunch of crazy hikes, though as it's snowing right now they'll probably be less crazy hikes because we're reading recent reviews of the ones we were looking at and they were written like WWII stories.

Thanks everyone for periodically checking in here. Even just seeing that a few eyes look over the log keeps me motivated to stay on top of things, but every once in a while I like to take a break just to do me and not worry about what I'm outwardly looking like. Starting tomorrow, I'll start uploading my runs and workouts again, though I'm not 100% I'll be running tomorrow as it stands now with the weekend plans. We'll see.

Fencing 45:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

Knees are sending me good signs. This concludes today’s knee broadcast.

I barely felt something in my knees after varying my stride, testing to see how much stress they could take. The fact that I felt anything is a bad sign. I think I'm going to schedule another appointment with Cornell's physical therapy staff. I worry for how the knees will feel tomorrow, but maybe they'll be ok?

Looking down when stretching, I think my left leg is slightly shorter than my right. I noticed this too while walking, my left leg stays ever so slightly more inline than my right, and I was putting the slightest amount more weight on my left leg. Honestly, it could all be in my head (and not my legs).

Fencing 42:30 intensity: (17:30 @2) + (12:00 @3) + (8:00 @4) + (5:00 @5)

Knee didn't feel bad so that's a plus. I'll give it another day, and if there's nothing wrong with it tomorrow I'm running.

Sunday Apr 4, 2021 #

Note

Back of my knee has been hurting for a couple days. I'm gonna take at least another day off probably.

Somehow it was all uphill. Also I was absolutely pelted by half-hail-half-snow thingies.

~25 minutes warmup, 9x66s up ~8% hill @ 5k effort w/ jog down recovery and 2x10s strides at the bottom, ~25 minute cooldown.

Knee was feeling a lil funky yesterday so I took the day off. The log is all updated now, sometimes I need a little break from updating stuff.

Some steep sections. Still have that problem with my side when I'm running downhill and it's super annoying. I just powered through it while wincing, no side-effects so far. I think it's just something I have to overcome each time I run somewhat quickly down a hill. I used to think it was related to ab strength but I'm not sure anymore because it's only really on my right side. It's not a stitch or cramp, it's different.

I've tried overlaying the GPS track on the map but my GPS was just having a bad day out there. I had to manually punch like 3 or 4 times. Here's a hand-drawn route instead:

1: Hesitation just south
2: Bad bearing in ambiguous forest
4: Good, safe route
5: Slow just cause I needed to make sure I was where I thought I was
6: Ran right past the feature and had to turn around
7: Thought I'd be clever with Greg right behind me and aim off to the east a bit but ended up attacking 8 and looking like a complete dunce
9: A really good route that minimized climb, had some trouble attacking it in the circle
11: Embarrassingly doubted myself
12: The green really didn't want me to attack it
13: Ran down the valley which I read as a spur. Got my contours backwards :/
14: Thought I'd try to be clever again and run along the road but it was WAY steeper and more dangerous than the map makes it look, so I went to the E trail. The trail was waterlogged so I had to overshoot past that last hill and turn around for a safe entry into 14, which I kinda botched anyways.

Super valuable training, but it was littered with miscellaneous mistakes. I almost wish I was just making one mistake consistently rather than the hodgepodge and potpourri I actually was.
