Biking 2:30:00 [3] 22.0 mi (6:49 / mi)

Lake Sammamish Parkway Loop

Long-ish bike ride with mother. 2:30:00 is fairly approximate and includes about 10 mins bathroom break.

So, biking. The good thing? My shins don't care whatsoever how much I bike. The bad? My bike feels just a little too small for me, even though it's new. Darn.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance

Bog Slog. Not much to say here. Point 2 was really confusing, and I learned that I'm really bad at 1) slogging through Pacific Northwest green without getting discouraged, and 2) hills. By point 7 I was not having fun any more and decided to go back, but ran into Arianna who had been on the course perhaps an hour longer than me. If she was still persevering, there was no way I would give up! So we did the rest of the course together... until they picked up point 12 before we got there. Oh well.

Shins? Eh..... not much running, but what running I did was fairly painful. Grr.

Running (grass/sidewalk) 21:00 [2] 1.8 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance

Shins doing okay again? Well, sort of. It's been a week and a half since UW, but still my shins are in pretty bad shape. How annoying! I was going to give them a week rest but what with Christmas and family and all (we're in Hawaii right now) it has taken me a few extra days to get back into the swing of things.

Shins hurt quite a bit at the outset, but that's reaonsably typical. Pain wore off by about the 7th minute. Then at minute 16 it was back again so I decided to walk the rest of the way home. Nevermind that it was supposed to be 20 minutes jogging... there's something to be said about achieving your goals, but "ignore your physical wellbeing as you reach them" is NOT it. So I took it easy.

Better luck next week, I hope.

Orienteering race (WIOL @ UW) 31:32 [3] 4.2 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: New Balance

Wow. Today's race was definite proof that Catherine completely lacks any common sense whatsoever.

Running 2+ miles in 17 minutes on asphalt two days before an all-pavement WIOL race, after only doing a handful of 20-minute 2-miles in the weeks before? Sound like a good idea, Catherine? Nooooo.

Basically, my shins just hurt all race. Hurt hurt hurt. Normally my shin pain kicks in at the start of a race, and then fades into the background of a nice happy runners' high before coming back again later that day. Today, the pain never faded out. So, thus, today was a rather bad race.

The moral?
Catherine, be SANE! Just because you have new insoles doesn't mean you're superwoman. Replacing a few podiatrist-mandated runs with Catherine-substituted- non-impact activities might be a good idea next week... I'm certainly not going to be able to run without pain for another two weeks or so...

Oh!!! Holly, Tori, (and Max, William, Drew, etc), be proud of me!! I finally grit my teeth and shoved my feet in a bucket of ice water when I got home today. Do I win a prize??

Running (road/gravel) 17:40 [4] 2.0 mi (8:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance

"20 mins" running with Holly, Tori, William, Drew, and Max.

Actually it was 10 mins out according to Max's watch, then turn around and come back. The crosswalk light was faster on the way back, so it turned out a little shorter than 20 mins, but oh well.

I gotta say, though, y'all run REALLY FAST! I'm completely in awe, your 5 mile pace is faster than my 1 mile pace, I swear!!

Nonetheless, here come Catherine's shin splints frustrations back again. I really want to push myself to run as fast as I can, but for my shins that's suicide. They're very sore right now despite ice. I shouldn't have run so hard before an O' race. But if I don't push myself, how will I ever get faster? That said, if I don't take it easy, how will my shins ever be okay again? RAWR.

Running (asphalt/gravel) 19:41 [3] 2.0 mi (9:50 / mi)
shoes: New Balance

Northacres Park loop

Starting stage 2 of the running program: run 20 mins every other day. I did have to stop twice to wait for a crosswalk light, but other than that it went as planned.

19:41 for a two-mile loop is certainly slow but I wasn't running at anything near my maximum, more like my "normal" orienteering-course pace... which is more of a 40-minute pace... plus the podiatrist said run for 20 mins, not paying attention to distance... yeah that's my excuse... I really do think I could run faster once I switch into the "2 mi distance, regardless of time" phase. I'll get better, promise!

Running (road) 20:00 [2] 1.9 mi (10:32 / mi)
shoes: New Balance

So here's the next installment in the podiatrist-prescribed running plan. Again with the 6/1/6/1/6 alternating minutes running/walking, plus taking it niiiice and easy since asphalt was all I had at my disposal. I'm sitting here now at my laptop with ice on my shins. They feel ooookay, and much better than they would have felt without my orthotics and shoes, but still, I'm gonna keep taking it easy, otherwise they'll flare up and it'll be back to square one.

Took the dog along this time, and boy is she tired! I guess she's not much of a runner!

Running 22:00 [2] 2.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Impromptu run to Northacres with William and Max. I was about to go home when William suggested I stay to run with him, and Max decided to tag along.

I had the wrong shoes with me (oops) and nothing warmer than shorts and a t-shirt, but whatever. I did the podiatrist-recommended amount: 20 minutes (okay, well 22 minutes, blehh), running 6 minutes then walking 1. I just feel bad for making the other two run such a lame-o pace and distance with me.

I hope that my shins don't get TOO mad at me. I did run a *little* further and harder than I should have, and the surfaces were a *little* concretier than they might have been. So fingers crossed. Currently I'm in the middle of some lovely RICE... well, not the E... not really the R either... plus add some Aleve... and I think I need a new acronym.

Regardless... I'm SUPER happy to be able to run after school with other people. Give it a few weeks and then maybe I won't be such a lame running partner as I am now!

Note

So I decided not to run today but to rest another day so my shins wouldn't get mad at me. And what do I get? Throbbing pain. What the hell??? I HATE my shins. GRAWR.

So... I may... uh... NOT run tomorrow... since it rather hurts to walk around my house right now...

Orienteering race (WIOL) 37:04 [3] 3.7 km (10:01 / km)
shoes: New Balance

The third WIOL meet of the season.

Definitely not as fast as I could have run in terms of foot-speed. Navigation was pretty good, though. Made a few roundabout route choices and got a little bit confused, but in Hamlin it's so easy to reorient since I know the park so well. No problem!

As Eric Bone pointed out, my times are getting closer and closer to Holly's and Tori's, which is super exciting for me! I'd like to think this is my A-meet experience paying off. After navigating many kilometers through dense forest without trails, city parks start to seem much easier!

Shins are a liiiiiitle bit sore, but better than normal. They just need a little TLC, I think. So here I sit swapping out ice packs and hot packs and hoping that'll do them in good stead.
