Orienteering race 57:20 [3] 4.1 km (13:59 / km) +117m 12:14 / km

A- day after US championships on the Cat's Agenda map.
The course seemed to be a little easier today. I was cruising along quite well for the first six controls. Lost concentration on the way to seven. Drifted way right and hit the trail. I thought I came out to the east of the control, but I was way north. I should have taken a little more time to be sure of where I was, but I didn't.. After not finding the control and being uncomfortable about the terrain, I went back to the trail and took the time to figure out where I was. Lost 8 to 10 minutes with this error. Lost a little more time on nine as I found what I thought was the trail west of the control, but wasn't on an actual trail.

US championships on Cat's Meow map.
The plan was to go as slow as it took to stay in contact with the map. This worked reasonably well as I had no major blunders. The second leg looked like make or break. As soon as I left the trail I lost contact. I just couldn't read the map. But kept on a bearing until I hit the big ridge and was able to relocate once on top. Big sigh of relief when I saw the control. OK after that as the hills and kettles were more distinct.

Model course for US championships.
Hepcat map in a misty rain.
Long trail run to the first control, which was essentially the start of the course. Since I was looking for practice, I left the trail on the way to two at the first junction. Promptly lost contact with the map, fortunately to the right. Several others going into the control from the trail got me going in the right direction. With a little more concentration, I completed the course reasonably well. Missed 11 to the left when I misread the map but relocated quickly on the trail. In spite of the wet weather, this was well worth while.
