Run 1:30:00 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (44:00 @2) + (40:00 @3)
shoes: 9 2007 Saucony

Same route as last time (the one turning around at the end of the dock) including the little coda at the end.

I didn't have a watch and wasn't sure of the time, so I wanted to ensure I got it all in.

Debut of the iPod Shuffle (a marvelous device.)

All systems felt great, especially the legs, through halfway. Didn't feel so fast on the way back. There was a bit of wind.

[The legs also felt pretty good yesterday (e.g., they weren't tired a little bit after finishing) yet I am slow. I must not have worked hard enough yesterday.]

Note

While it is too early to declare victory, my feelings towards DVOA may be about to improve. And it has nothing to do with the relays.

If certain things happen, and they may well, some of my principal complaints will be on their way to being redressed.

Weight training 30:00 [3]

Leg machines and 3 circuits.

Run warm up/down 10:00 [1] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

Easy warmup on the trail.

Orienteering race 1:25:26 [4] *** 11.5 km (7:26 / km) +490m 6:07 / km
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

2009 Flying Pig Blue Long. Another really, really nice course. Almost too nice. There were moments during that course that I felt like I was out running in the park. It was beautiful. Course setting was also quite good, again demonstrating OCIN's unerring ability to get the most out of marginal terrain.

My performance was lacking.

Note

Another OCIN accomplishment--really good map printing. Granted, it isn't highly complex terrain, but their printing was of equal utility with offset, and I can rarely say that.

They do such a great job with their meets. What a club! If only the terrain was better...

(One caveat--there has been a tendency for them to set inappropriate beginners' legs on relays and apparently they did so this time as well.)

Orienteering race 17:30 [4] 2.25 km (7:47 / km) +60m 6:52 / km
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

Pig Sprint, administered by Get Lost.

A so-so performance. One or two questionable routes in the beginning, but then boomed #9 (where I saw Greg leaving.) My standing around allowed him to get away.

I was shocked when I saw him at the end, and then when he was walking in the finish. I thought he was hurt at first, but he clarified he was protesting, and I thought that sounded reasonable, so I walked across the finish line with him. It seemed unseemly to pass a protesting GOAT.

Note

Greg was really torqued up about this event, and so was I, but differently.

He didn't like the course; I thought it was fine. True, the end was junky, but the beginning was really nice.

The crux of the matter for me was that this was the grand debut of the "Get Lost" "professional" orienteering company. It paled in comparison to the volunteer-based OCIN.

The two non-working controls, and the one non-working finish control are one thing. Not doing a check that the controls are working and not turning them on before runners get to them is just weak. And then, to crown it all, when the "CEO" was confronted, rather than assume responsibility, he throws his "volunteer" employee under the bus, saying he (an OCIN gentleman) was not there on time. And about the equipment issues--"It wasn't my equipment."

Not very classy. Not very "professional".

Finally--the results. Granted, my results were especially screwed up due to punch issues, but the fact that there is no elapsed time on the printout and the whole bloody thing is in Russian? Come on. If you are doing a meet in the US, do the results in English. Or Spanish. Not Russian.

Run warm up/down 10:00 [1]
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

Warmup before the relay.

Orienteering race 36:55 [4] *** 5.4 km (6:50 / km) +395m 5:00 / km
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

Flying Pig 2009 US Relay Champs 8 point team Red leg.

My best run of the weekend. Fairly pleased. At most had 60 to 90 seconds of mistakes, with maybe half of that coming on one control.

I ran fairly steady and hard. I knew Mook was right behind me, and indeed, as I looked over my shoulder at the start, I think I saw him coming in after me. The pressure was on.

The orienteering was pretty straightforward, as appropriate, and the course was physical.

I was fairly sure I was holding him off, and I finished strong. Unfortunately, I did cede 5 seconds, but I'll take it. We finished with a small margin.

Note

So with that, Baltero earns his final 4 point relay gold with DVOA. And I earn my first 8 point gold.

It has been an honor running with Greg as a teammate these past few years. I don't understand, respect, or even wish to tolerate his decision (partially serious here) but I do wish him the best.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

Warmup before the Pig Middle. A couple of times up and down a grassy hill.

Orienteering race 38:30 [4] **** 4.8 km (8:01 / km) +290m 6:10 / km
shoes: Spring 2009 Integrators

2009 Flying Pig Blue Middle.

Another very nice OCIN course and event. I could nitpick about one aspect of the course, but it was really quite fine.

My performance was not good and not bad. I wasn't moving fast enough for one thing, but I lost the most time on shorter legs.

Note

After a few too many beers with Sandy and the Eagles, we decided that I would ask Greg to switch positions in the relay in the morning.

Run 30:00 [2]
shoes: 9 2007 Saucony

Level 8 hills.

Accelerated over last 6 minutes to finish at 9.8 mph.

Cross Training 20:00 [2]
shoes: 9 2007 Saucony

Level 8 hills.

Weight training 30:00 [2]

The weight training I should be doing every week (and should have done a day earlier this week to prep my muscles for battle.) Because of proximity to the event, I kept it light. Did machines and a circuit.

Run warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: 9 2007 Saucony

Level 8 hills.

CSU training. A fun little park used well by Ian.

Orienteering 16:00 [2] *
shoes: Salomon SpeedCross 2 2009

Back to Alewife along the shorter southern route.

Note

Eased into my effective unemployment with a (large) Wild Devil. The first glass is a bit of a shock to the system, but it quickly becomes quite agreeable.
