Orienteering race 21:04 [4] *** 2.4 km (8:47 / km)
shoes: Icebug

Enjoyable course, but a so-so performance. Guessing getting only 2 hrs of sleep the night prior didn't help (don't know why my body couldn't fall asleep till 4:30 am-- maybe the dulce de leche?) Was deliberately not pushing hard due to 2nd sprint later in the day but even w/o pushing hard I got way too wobbly on my navigating more than once. For some reason I was having trouble maintaining contact with the course lines and circles and kept losing my place on the map. I really should have done better on this one in retrospect. Ugh. The tent platforms all over gave it an interesting maze dynamic, loved that aspect of it. Love forest sprints and wish we did more of them as an O community.

Orienteering race 17:01 [4] ** 2.7 km (6:18 / km)

Sprint at PSU Berks. Felt better than in the morning after small nap. Speed was ok. My goal was simply to just do a clean race and not mispunch to secure a good Blue ranking for the year. I mostly accomplished that. Didn't mispunch, and all controls were clean except one minor mistake going to #12. I accidentally ran around a building north side the wrong way instead of between buildings...came out of 11 going around the wrong building. It still took me to 12 but was a wider and not optimal route that cost me precious time and at least three places in the results. Proof yet again that at this level of competition just one mistake has huge cost.

Overall I was successful w/ some of my goals and that may have been my last national of the year, but I also didn't really do as well as I know I can so I'm wondering if I should try to end the year on a better note. Still it's been a much improved year over the previous and this race locked that in, I've already scored in the 70s on Blue twice this year, and I had a fun time at this great event. Looking forward to building on it all going forward.

Galen's training sprint at Cherry Creek SP. Mostly good. Big buck stared me down on way to #5 and looked to be pretty territorial, so I swallowed my pride & detoured around him. Doing well in some places, a little sluggish in others, but good nav overall except for one control. Perfect running weather!

Surpassed 1,000 controls either visited or armchaired this year! Goal was 2,000. Its late in the year so probably not going to make 2,000, but 1,000 is pretty nice and I do think its helped improve my navigation a little.
