well, all that eating hasn't shifted my weight much... Thai curry w/ tofu & fridge-cleansing mix of veg for dinner tonite. probably another trip to Taylor park, our favorite bench, & yet another dog-picnic today since temps will still be low today, only about 25...

walking 25:00 [1] 1.2 km (20:50 / km)

to the park. I LOVE summer...
saw Bruno but his ma decided he was being naughty & thus was going to miss out on chewing G's head today. Poor Bruno.
G sure likes "The Big Boys" - a chow (Bao), a chow cross (Tischa), a pit bull (Chevy), & a boxer (Bruno).

walking 20:00 [1] 1.0 km (20:00 / km)

to calm the cranky dog (and apparently also to stop Gerbil-wife from doing evening-gerbil around house after dinner) we went out to Central Park and walked around a totally new area for G - pond, stream, volleyballers, picnickers, badminton, the new (and very dignified) Korean monument, sunset...

Monday Jul 30, 2007 #

walking 35:00 [1] 1.8 km (19:27 / km)

two walks today, one to Taylor to sit in the sun (I get darker, the dog gradually bleaches lighter, from red to gold) - this time we went around the base of the park before sitting at the street hockey enclosure. Bao came by & chewed G's head. Then in the evening Tischa chewed G's head too, so it was a really fine day overall.
Excellent vegetarian lasagna w/ Yves' Vegetable Ground Round, works really well !! Did a pumpkin cake which crashed cuz I used 1/2 tsp instead of 1 tsp measure for baking soda, arrrggghhh. I think flavor is good tho, will try it on Dennis to seeif I should make it again.
Blackberries almost ready to pick!

Note

early afternoon up to the base of Pitt Lake to assemble our Ally canoe, stick dog in it, & paddle across to Widgeon Creek, wow is it ever great up there! I wanna go up to the campsite at the top of the creek next time, about twice as far. But we had to get back to Grant Narrows before 6:30 to cook dinner so we turned around after about an hour of paddling (well, D paddled, I waved my paddle at the water periodically).
Grilled naughty italian sausages, corn on the cob, & skewered vegies while D took the canoe apart, then toasted big slabs of grainy bread on the coals as we ate, & strawberries afterwards. Good sunset, all of us were exhausted when we got home and fell right into bed/kennel.

measured Tacoma extended cab and it is too darn big. Back to the Element...

Note

oops... haven't logged the last week... went to Campbell River, and had fun - great camping just north of the town, nice lakes, quite peaceful. Found some nice places to stay with family maybe - Tsa-Kwa-Luten, Rustic Motel...Fairly (OK, REALLY) low energy tho, getting it back as the week goes on. Thursday was pretty normal. Went to Taylor Park for an hour w/ G-dog on Wed and on Th, sitting in sunshine, nicer weather these days. Will start logging again. As energy came back I started eating like a horse!

walking 50:00 [1] 2.5 km (20:00 / km)

over to the train station & then up at Highgate for doctor's appt, then over to Taylor park w/ G in the sunshine - after 3 days she knows which bench to go to, where the water fountain is for her drink, etc...

train today to downtown for transfusion, chinese delivery for dinner, yum, I sure hope energy doesn't crash out like yesterday. Watching Merchant of Venice (Al Pacino etc) to keep from gerbilling about, wow that's a movie & a half !!!

walking 35:00 [1] 1.9 km (18:25 / km)

felt a bit better going out - pouring pretty good but couldnt be bothered to go back up to get a hat, G doesnt have a hat either... tea afterwards & picked off all the oregano leaves harvested earlier from patio planters to dry. Then off downtown.

weight:58.2kg

I am loving this weight plateau! (maintained only with lotsa cheese and a DQ visit, but if that is what it takes...) A bit achey, yesterday's walk may have been a bit much. More rest today I guess, maybe ice shoulders.
Classic baked beans, cornbread, & watermelon. I keep stashing my navy beans in "safe" places, "running out", buying more, finding the old stashes, & getting twitchier & twitchier about being a big ol' Bean Hoarder...
Reading Judge Dee to get thru last few days until the last HP is released.

walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 km (20:00 / km)

walk over to corner grocery & then G-walk down to parkway & up the top of Stairmaster, then we investigated the gravel where they have ripped up for a nice new sidewalk by Belvedere, waded in some mud, & called it a day. For some reason I got Really Wiped Out by late afternoon. No idea why.

salmon tonight, rest day.

walking 35:00 [1] 1.8 km (19:27 / km)

cooler today (but REALLY humid, it turns out) - G & I went out into light rain & went for a good walk over to daycares, down around Taylor Park & out by Ledgestone, over to the base of Stairmaster & back home up the Stairmaster. (Must remember to go down as well, as that is actually harder) Massive fog now. Doing intense teriyaki on the salmon, brown rice, stirfry of random contents of lower fridge regions.

walking 35:00 [1] 1.8 km (19:27 / km)

ran around alot in AM w/ dad-in-law - groceries, more charcoal, library, dropping stuff off, pick up dog, lunch at Barney's walked G in their neighborhood, had risotto & cheesecake for lunch yum. Kinda drug out most of the afternoon, pasta for dinner w/ blueberries & mango. Walk in the evening after dinner, met Buttons who used to HATE Gypsy but now they played quite nicely. Itchy-dog diet is going down very nicely! Rain stopped by evening, cool & pleasant. Got a drawing from Wycliff in Kenya, to go w/ Samina's flower picture on the fridge.

Monday Jul 16, 2007 #

walking 18:00 [1] 0.8 km (22:30 / km)

salmon loaf for dinner along w/ brocolli W/ oyster sauce, rice, some blueberries & icecream. Afternoon walk we met Bao again over by the Rocks & G got disgustingly slobbered-on, but enjoyed herself w/ a bit of off-leash galloping. still kinda warm for them.
Got Alfie to give me a ride over to Tisol to pick up some "duck & potato" kibble and matching biscuits for poor lil G, since she is so itchy esp. her feet, she probably has food allergy, seems so "precious" I am embarassed, but apparently it is sadly common. Not expensive at all, and very similar in appearance to her present kibbles. Seems to like it so far.

walking 10:00 [1] 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Sunday was good day, leisurely start w/ naughty visit to a really good breakfast buffet at the Sea-to-Sky, then drove up into the area behind the Chief to ...a hydro recreation site, very quiet as compared to yesterday altho sub-moron presence could be observed by all the TP in the woods - ie no pit toilets, plus beer cans and various burned detritus. But still relatively unspoiled, beautiful river. G had her breakfast there after our walk. Then a bit more exploring and a late picnic at the deserted Squamish airport (watched a helicopter land and get tied down right next to us) under the big mountains on either side of the valley. drove home, went out for thai food. Evening walk G met a daschund (she has a THING for male daschunds) named Hoagie (go figure) & had a crazy good time running aorund & playing off-leash w/ him for 10 minutes or so. Then they were both exhausted.

Saturday Jul 14, 2007 #

walking 40:00 [1] 2.0 km (20:00 / km)

D did his 10K at Alice Lake, w/ 7 min km's, says he could do better if he had studied course & paced himself to use all his juice up. Next time...
G & I were persona non grata - Alice Lake is so heavily used that dogs are totally not allowed anyplace but along the parking lot, so we marched around there, set up camp by the jeep w/ chair etc, & were quite comfortable. Afterwards we went to Cat Lake which has CHANGED to a major sub-moron hang-out. drinking, pot, mild raucousness, diving face-first onto submerged logs aka the biggest bloody nose incident I ever saw in my life, etcetc. But it was fun, we hung out, had a picnic, hung out, grilled a steak, some corn-on-the-cob, & some cheese bread, delicious. They want to "save" Cat Lake from the golf course developers....hmmmm, maybe that would be an improvement at this point, in some ways.

slept:8.0 weight:57.4kg

felt very unwell for most of yesterday afternoon but good sleep has helped, I hope. Weight still sliding a bit, but in the heat we were eating a bit less, I think. Frenzy of preparing for sis-in-law's shower is now over, what fun it was! Getting ready to go north for Squamish Thunder 10K on Saturday. SE asian noodles and tofu this evening. I notice my temp senstivity resets pretty easily - one day 78 was making me sweat, the next day that was deliciously cool, the next day 84 was feeling pretty refreshing...there is a limit tho.

walking 15:00 [1] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

quickie walk in the afternoon before driving up to Squamish in the evening.

Note
weight:57.6kg

cooled off a bit last night, nice !
am gonna whip up a sushi salad this evening (rice is cooked already in the cool morning), maybe another thing of icecream...
R knee was acting up again last night after a few days of slow improvement - see how it goes. G more tired than usual...or maybe she is just luxuriating in the cool breeze today.

walking 15:00 [1] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

very disciplined march around neighborhood to improve relations, D is right, she behaves better & seems quite comfortable w/ a brisk heel interspersed w/ fairly structured sniff-N-pee sessions, also making for many fewer distressing (& potentially dangerous) sidewalk-snax. Hopefully she will be less into that as she gets older. I feel a bit sad that we can't meander about in a relaxed way, but a dog is a dog, & maybe they need more pack-leader structure than humans do (well duh when you put it like that).

Wednesday Jul 11, 2007 #

Note
weight:57.8kg

a bit dehydrated maybe despite my efforts to drink. Today will apparently go up to 37 so this will be the warmest day. Making pizza this AM, which I will slice and chill. Also hummous & whole wheat tortilla crisps, and beautiful dark, icey-cold organic cherries.

walking 27:00 [1] 1.4 km (19:17 / km)

over to the Rocks, down the bikepath & back up via the garden path, quite hot, stayed in shade, metal and black things do get the hottest, along w/ tarmac of road; we avoid the former & skedaddle across the latter. G-dog still in great shape, but does get rang-ee in evening, combination of renewed energy & developmental stage (like teenager, forgetting all civilzed traits painstakingly learned as child). Maybe a bit of short-leash discipline walks is in order. Met Jack the black spaniel & Whistler the white American Eskimo on the somewhat contentious evening walk.

Note
weight:58.2kg

cooking the risotto this morning to serve chilled, which should be luscious. No need for tylenol last night so that is excellent.

walking 30:00 [1] 1.6 km (18:45 / km)

2X 0.8 km, one around 2pm & one around 9pm... avoiding sunshine both times, quite sucessful in maintaining doggy perkiness, in fact on latter walk she was a but asinine, also trying fiercely to eat these HUGE DISGUSTING swollen yellow bugs, gah!!! I believe they are the chafer beetles, & one can see why the larvae in the lawns would make crows and other animals absolutely mad to dig the whole lawn up, cuz that is one heck of a big lump of fat and protein.
Lots of talk about air-conditioners amongst the dogwalkers. We just sweat. Gypsy seems to be beautifully adapted now to the heat, even keeps her appetite during the heat of the day.

Note

started groaning again as soon as I started to sleep so nipped it in the bud by chomping a nice big time-release tylenol and bracing-up my worst joint which worked good, will ice as well - shoulders, wrists, hands...forgot to mention that I am emulating the dudes in the thread on terrain training - I am focussing on walking more on lawns than on asphalt & concrete so my ankles stay (relatively) nimble, training in terrain, oh yeah! It cracks me up, but it's also true. we all got our challenges.
Gonna be hot next few days, in the mid-thirties, which is crazy for us in BC...maybe a picnic in the park the hottest evening, and just stay out til dusk.... easy meal tonite, (pre-made) vegan chili & tortillas...

walking 25:00 [1] 1.2 km (20:50 / km)

two walks, very small cuz very hot, but G is doing really well, I tihnk she has shed a bit more of her puppy/undercoat, plus her natural indolence combined w/ my strategic choice of shady routes are keeping us both nicely cooled. apparently Wed. is heading for 37 degrees, blood heat!
First was middle of day (well, 2:30pm, over to the woods down a little ways along the creek, & then back to the Rocks for a sit. Second one was around sunset cooling nicely, dawdling around waiting for Ladybug to show up - met Kischa & he tried to eat G's head as usual, so a good time was had by all.

walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 km (20:00 / km)

7-8-7 - day of rollout for the 787, nifty huh?

checked out a park by Tsehum Harbor N of Sidney (note: I think we only are able to canoe AFTER a day of full rest - canoeing did not happen today). Lounged around Beacon Ave in Sidney, dog got totally habituated w/ super-urban area, sidewalk cafe lunch, etc, so that was good.

I got a flare last night w/ much semi-conscious groaning, very tired today (also got dehydrated I think). Gotta manage that a bit better.

Saturday Jul 7, 2007 #

Note

7-7-7 - day of weddings...
nada today, had a barbeque w/ parents, had a great time.

Note

off to the Island in the sun...the girls are out w/ Dennis & G walking around the ravine, & I'm finisihing my cafe au lait, mmmmm. Then off to Coquitlam to drop them off, then pack, then the Island !! sunshine here we come !

walking 15:00 [1] 0.7 km (21:26 / km)

Shannon got a beesting but recovered nicely. Breakfast at De Dutch, then we dropped them off, got the 5pm ferry (met a super-cute terrier-type puppy at the terminal & she & G tired each other out nicely for the ferry ride. Then a walk around Tulista Park by the US ferry terminal in Sidney, across the street from Cedarwood where we were staying.

Thursday Jul 5, 2007 #

Note

super nasty dream at 5am, so got up & made chocolate cake & whole wheat spicey crackers for trip to Island on Friday. Kids are coming over to watch G's grad ceremony (hmmm, or abject failing grade) from obedience class - pizza from Me N Ed's for dinner and a sleepover...still pretty hot today.

walking 17:00 [1] 0.8 km (21:15 / km)

micro-meander thru neighborhood in fabulous sun, met another shiba owner at the The Rocks (sans shiba but w/ kid) & talked for a half hour...had to scamper a bit to catch the grocery delivery guy. G is demolishing sticks & pinecones iside the house & outside - feels the need to destroy. R knee is gibbled. Puppy hunger-strike appears to be over, I win again. Time for some fairtrade darjeeling...

walking 15:00 [1] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

quick pee-gallop thru the woods before class with the kids.

Yellow Dog Yoga 10:00 [1]

suddenly did 10 minutes of standing poses, some beautiful music made me stretch my arms to the sky, & I just kept going. Like a blessing in return, an endorphin rush (or whatever that is) cancelled all pain for about 3 minutes half way thru, amazing feeling!!!!

Note
weight:57.8kg

weight is low hydration, I think. energy seems fine. Gonna be hot today, I believe. Summer menu, fresh corn on the cob, cherries, prawns & scallops in kick-ii-up-a-notch spices, rice....
one basic flaw in G's food philosophy is she hasn't figured out kibbles handed out one by one are NOT treats, she thinks she is scoring bigtime when I give her kibbles one at a time. From my point of view, not totally optimal as a meal-feeding strategy, very labor-intensive ;-), but it's a starting point...

walking 30:00 [1] 1.5 km (20:00 / km)

2 walks w/ G-dog. Ramp has been cut off. Just as well, want feet to stay happy. Met a chow named Bao (bun in cantonese) who loves Gypsy. Who doesn't, huh?!

Tuesday Jul 3, 2007 #

walking 40:00 [1] 2.0 km (20:00 / km)

up to Highgate to purchase myriad small items including jellybellys, stamps, toothbrushes, a bottle of muscat, some cheese, alotta orange juice...small walk over to rocks w/ G-dog, she seems not to feel too great w/ her meds, esp. when she insists on not eating kibble to cushion them, oh well, her choice. But after 6 hr nap, she is ready to go out, run around, meet dogs, & wheedle snax.
tofu tonight was odd, but the noodles & peanut sauce & fridge-cleansing vegie melange were yummy. And vegan.

walking 15:00 [1] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)

evening walk, G had a ton of energy as it cooled off beautifully & did sprints on Villa Jardin's back lawn w/ a tiny apricot poodle named Cookie, so she probably did about 2km... she appears to be officially on a hungerstrike for a diet of dried worm jerky off the sidewalk, treats form other dogwalkers (gotta nip that off), squirrel stashes of cheetos, peanuts etc in the lawn (uh, no), peanut-butter containing pills (that's OK, arggghhh), marrowbones (not happening, too distracting by far) & any other snax she can wheedle. NO kibbles, unacceptable. hmmmm....

Monday Jul 2, 2007 #

Note

we will try the vegan chili I made w/ the seitan/tofu product from Yves Vegie stuff, see if it behaves after being frozen, tasted great beforehand. Nice organic whole wheat balkan-style baguette (kinda flattened) to go wth...
everything seems overall to be behaving well, tummy is good, feet are OK, hand is OK, eyes are getting better perhaps cuz of hydration efforts. Maybe stay away from attempts to lower into 57kg zone as both efforts have been accompanied by dreary weakness - not real scientific, but when anecdotal-level results happen to YOU, they are somehow more persuasive...

walking 40:00 [1] 2.1 km (19:03 / km)

3 lil trips today, kinda warm so not wanting to heat dog, or overdo my joints. first, was usual mid-day-ish trip to sit on the rocks, lay in the grass, and wonder where all the dogs are (turns out dogs DON'T run about in the midday sun of the GVRD). Random members of Gypsy's fan club attacked as usual, this time a family of New Canadians from eastern Europe out for a stroll. Second trip right after that was up to the corner grocery for organic cheese & cherries, excellent quality from the Interior. Goggled at a Dodge Nitro, thinking it was a really muscled-up HHR w/ great off-road clearance. Then later around 9pm G & I walked around in the cool of the evening while D vacuumed, we met Chevy the pitbull AND Mischa, so G pee'd her pants w/ joy. Then Mischa (gently) chewed her all over, so definitely time for a wipe-down upon returning.

walking 35:00 [1] 1.8 km (19:27 / km)

Happy Canada Day! we took it easy (watched Spellbound which was kinda interesting) - did two walks with G-dog, one gentle in middle of day over to the rocks for a rest & then down the creek a bit & back around the parkway & upper stairmaster. No cat. Second one was also gentle after dinner to settle the thai leftovers into my tummy, just a classic 1km around the block, met the people from our building who want a puppy just like Gypsy in the parking lot so Gypsy got a good petting; I'm glad she is starting to get more into people, she sees them, wags her tail, perks up, trots over to them just like a real dog. Pills for her itchiness are going down OK albeit w/ a fair amount of peanut butter.
