Orienteering race 1:37:56 [5] 15.0 km (6:32 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280

WOC selection long, Holme Fell. Really up for this and loved the wild conditions that were waiting for us on the fells. But I started the race really sloppily, got confused by the strange angle of the start kite and struggled to find the entrance to a corridor between uncrossable walls. Bounced around hunting for kites among unmapped windblow in the wood, then settled into it on the long leg up the hill. I really enjoyed this section and pushed as hard as I could, well aware that it was probably a make or break part of the race.

Slowed a bit for the butterflies and nearly missed out a whole wing because of all the broken red lines around the uncrossable walls. I actually laughed out loud when I turned my map over and saw that we were going over the hill for a third time. Dug in again and got soaked in a hail storm before dropping back into the knolls and missing the penultimate.

Not a very controlled performance, but tough and fun and did the job. I need to put some work in on my technique before the summer.

Orienteering race 37:37 [5] 6.0 km (6:16 / km)

WOC selection middle, Bigland. Nice map, nice course, nice terrain, but a poor performance. Good start and felt very smooth through the first half of the race. I had just decided that I was invincible and that it was impossible to miss when I made a string of smaller mistakes followed by what I thought was a race-ender. Let my head drop a bit after that, which was stupid - anything can happen, especially in a selection race. Surprised to finish 3rd, I guess everyone had a hard time of it out there today. Ashamed to have had a bit of a strop at the finish.

Running 30:00 [2] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Good warm up and bagged a trig after with Nails and Craney.

Orienteering 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) 6.0 km (7:30 / km)

Training for the weekend at Rusland, a tricky little area next to High Dam. Ran up to the top of the area with Bilbo, then ran a windy course back down the hill at various different intensities. Bilbo shadowed me for a bit, which upped the pressure and helped the confidence.

Running 50:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (20:00 @5) 12.0 km (4:10 / km)

Time to get serious after a couple of weeks of mucking around. HFW then out to Hillsborough Park for some drills and reps. 4x1200ish (long Hallamshire loop) off 5mins, 3.46 (too fast but it felt easy), 3.50, 3.52, 3.51. Suffered on reps 3 and 4, which was, I suppose, the point. Jenny turned up to keep me company, which was much appreciated.

Running Drills 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Drills, strides and sprints.
