Orienteering race 2:26:33 [3] **** 12.5 km (11:43 / km) +410m 10:04 / km
spiked:15/20c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Champs, Day 2, The Big Sandy. Navigation generally not too bad, except for one control where I stopped one reentrant short, and one nice long leg where I kept telling myself not to lose track of my location at the end, but then did exactly that. Had some trouble due to the very pale colors on the map -- had a lot of diffculty seeing the contours, and that hurt me in a few places. Physically pretty slow, but that's not surprising given the circumstances.

Note

Drove with Charlie to Colby, KS - change of plans because he got a phone message saying that his meeting was cancelled. Car has been making an odd sound, I think, but it's a little hard to tell. Bad gas? Altitude? Malpractice on the part of the Wal-Mart oil change guys?

Orienteering race 1:57:41 [3] *** 10.4 km (11:19 / km) +480m 9:12 / km
spiked:18/20c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Champs, Day 1, Buena Vista, Blue. Ran early, stomach wasn't feeling very good. Navigated fine except for one wobbly route, and one leg where I dropped through the wrong saddle and wound up off to one side, which left me puzzled when I found myself amid a lot of rock. Corrected reasonably quickly.

Orienteering 21:56 [2] ***
spiked:2/2c

Checking out a couple of controls on the model event map. Started out as distinctly laid-back level 1 (in sandals), but when the thunderstorm made its approach known, there was some vigorous high-tailing to get back to the car before the hail hit -- made it just in time.

Orienteering race 56:32 [4] *** 6.07 km (9:19 / km)
spiked:15/16c

First With The Most, Red, about 12th place. Pretty clean, just tiny hiccups on two controls (went to the right place but didn't see the flags at first), and one bad route due to poor planning that probably cost 3-4 minutes. Ran late, and it was getting fairly warm

Orienteering race 1:04:09 [4] *** 5.7 km (11:15 / km)
spiked:18/19c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

Crystal Relay, Antenna Hill, leg 1. Yeah, spiked all but one, but it was the first one, and it was a big blunder. Started out with the lead pack, but when we dropped off the edge, I went further to the right than they did. If I had really committed and gone way right, I would have been okay, but I didn't stop to read the map long enough, and I went into the worst of the nasty green. When I finally extricated myself, I overcorrected too far to the left, then wasn't quite certain where I was, and I wound up overshooting, going too far downhill, and had to loop back. Finally arrived right behind Gale Teschendorf, and I may have been the last person to arrive at the first control; lost at least six minutes, I think. Spent the rest of the course reeling people in and worked my way back up to 17th place. Not a very auspicious start for my team.

Note

Turned in a value of 1.06 G at the official G Weigh-In.

Note

Did not do the Sprint. Was not feeling up to it, and just hung around instead. Did play 9 holes of prairie golf afterwards, though, and shot a 62.

Night-O race 1:21:39 [4] *** 8.8 km (9:17 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: VJ Falcons #1

US Night-O Champs, The Lights of Cheyenne, Red course. 7th overall, 2nd US M45. Not too bad a run, just uncertainty going to the first control, and difficulty reading the vegetation on the way into #3. Somewhat ill (digestive problems), so it's certainly not a disappointing result. Managed to keep up more of a decent running pace than I had on the weekend, due in part to favorable temperatures.
