Running (Trail) 40:39 [3] 5.58 mi (7:17 / mi)

Perimeter Trail in Greenbelt Park by myself. Not many people showed-up from PGRC. Felt awful and out of shape running. Hadn't run much lately due to laziness and my hip hurting.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:01:50 [2] 3.5 km (34:49 / km)

Setting out controls for the QOC Fran Uhler/Bowie meet on December 8. Did some trail maintenance too. The park had dried-up a lot since 1 1/2 weeks back but there are still some puddles on the roads and on routes.

Tuesday Nov 26, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 43:08 [3] 6.25 mi (6:54 / mi)

From the UMD Track; Adelphi Rd. to Wells Pkwy, across Rte. 1 to the College Park Metro Station, to the 94th Aero Squadron, back to UMD via the Paint Branch Trail. Dark but not, raining and cold like last time--also about 3 minutes faster and much easier. Includes some extra distance to Cole Field House.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 4:19:00 [2] 9.0 km (28:47 / km)

Course Setting in Fran Uhler/Patuxent River parks. I looked for and found some better control location options, streamered the last controls and cleared some trails. I had intended to go to QOC's Chopawamsic meet but I ran out of time and needed to get this done this week before I go on travel again in December.

Running (Street & Trail) 51:10 [3] 7.0 mi (7:19 / mi)

From Greenbelt Park in Greenbelt: Got to PGRC practice late. Chased the group and caught them at the campground road. Good Luck Rd. to 94th Aerosquadron, up the Paint Branch Trail, around Lake Artemesia to Berwyn Rd. to Edmonstond Rd. to Greenbelt Rd. to the park. Felt crappy most of the way but the wind and cold wasn't as bad as the 38 degrees and 17 mph would lead you to believe.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 3:19:31 [2] 6.5 km (30:42 / km)

I had to move some controls out or away from water but the cool & windy conditions have done wonders drying out the park. I spent some time marking-up my map to make updates for new trails. Found a bridge not on the map too.

Friday Nov 22, 2002 #

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:32:00 [1] 2.5 km (36:48 / km)

In Fran Uhler/Patuxent River Park. Cleared-out some debris. Discovered the northeast-most end of Flemming Pond is under water due not only to the rain but beaver activity. The trail no longer loops unless you want to wade-in.

Bicycling (Mountain Bike Street & Tr) 1:32:33 [3] 14.7 mi (6:18 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. in Bowie, WB&A Trail to Patuxent River Park/Fran Uhler Park, trails there, then back on the WB&A to Hillmeade Rd. and back to Quill Point Dr. This is the first time I mountain biked at night. It worked pretty well. As usual with night activties, it was wet, though it did not rain this time and was about 50 degrees. The foggy moonlit landscape was captivating in the parks. Heavy rains had filled the marshes and with the leaves off, I could see extensive wetlands that have until now either been hidden or dry. Forested marsh was under a foot or more of water. I biked through some of the big puddles on the trails which on bike at least, weren't so deep. I biked most on the Race Track Trail but I got on the Duvall Mill Trail and some others. It was very calm and peaceful. I also stopped and started to & from the WB&A trail to record distance measurements for running. If an O'meet were held now, no one would escape dry...

Running (Street & Trail) 31:25 [4] 4.66 mi (6:44 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. in Bowie; WB&A Trail Loop. Started at around 11:20pm, stiff for the first half mile. The just waining moon was as nearly close to the 12:00 position as it ever gets and was so bright it cast well defined shadows even from the high tension lines 60-70ft up in the air. I could read my watch by it on the run. I did 6:40 pace on the trail and a last uphill mile just under 6:30. Though I kept feeling like I couldn't move my legs fast or far enough, the cold air seems to be improving my speed & endurance. I had been mis-judging the distance of this route as shorter earlier. I think this is the fastest I've run this loop to date.

Weights (Dumb Bells) 12:00 [3]

30 Push-ups, 45 sit-ups, upper body dumb bells.

Tuesday Nov 19, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 56:28 [4] 8.25 mi (6:51 / mi)

From the stands at UMD Track, up the Northwest Branch Trail to the end of the pavement and back. In the beginning I was stiff and somewhat sore from the weekend. The day or rest imposed by working late didn't alleviate that. Once on the trail, I loosened. It was cool. I ran off the trail in the dark twice due to the leaf cover. I felt fairly strong though I wasn't going very fast. Last spring I was doing this 3 minutes faster. My hip hurt a little and my right quad felt strained coming back--probably related.

Weights (Calisthetics) 5:00 [3]

30 push-ups, 45 sit-ups.

Running (Warm-down) 18:00 [2] 3.4 km (5:18 / km)

Warm-down on the UMD track--part of it with Peggy while she warmed-up.

Sunday Nov 17, 2002 #

Running (Warm-up) 10:00 [2] 0.7 mi (14:17 / mi)

Warm-up at Susquehanna State Park for QOC's meet with David Onkst. Chilly sub-50 degrees with light rain.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:13:30 [4] 7.85 km (9:22 / km)
spiked:12/15c

QOC's local meet at Susquehanna State Park. See the Split List for details. Rainy and cold but once I got going it was fine. I lost the most time on #13 & #14.

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 1:23:00 [2] 4.0 km (20:45 / km)
spiked:10/10c

Jogging to pick-up controls for the Susquehanna State Park meet in the rain with my fleece and raincoat. The water in the creeks was cold and my legs wet but I kept warm.

Saturday Nov 16, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 28:57 [3] 4.1 mi (7:04 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. in Bowie, MD. Streets around Northridge and nearby neighborhoods. It's been raining since I got back from the midwest on Friday evening. I felt heavy with my rainsuit.

Thursday Nov 14, 2002 #

Orienteering (Night-O Training) 1:15:00 [3] 4.45 km (16:51 / km)

At Forest 44, west of St. Louis, MO. Thursday night training with the St. Louis club. Eric Buckley organized it. I got to set out 2 controls. As usual w/night-o and me, it rained. This time it was cold but it felt fine once I got going. I set out #1 & #3 then went to #2 and back to #3. Even # controls did not have a marker. I was going slowish; navigated well except for one area where I either got confused w/trails or suspected a map problem (around #7). It was a fun night! Saw some deer and a racoon who crouched low when I approached saying "here kitty, kitty." Steep ridges and valleys. Forgot to start my watch at the start.

Wednesday Nov 13, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 50:36 [3] 7.0 mi (7:14 / mi)

From Craigshead Rd. on the west side of St. Louis, MO, near I-270; wandering the hilly and often concrete neighborhood streets.

Monday Nov 11, 2002 #

Orienteering (Course Setting) 3:05:13 [2] 6.0 km (30:52 / km)

Setting courses for QOC's meet at Fran Uhler on December 8. It had rained all night and part of the day before I went out. I could get past most of the water w/o getting wet but it took some good jumps. I ran out of time. The warm 70 degree air turned foggy quickly at dusk. With a half moon up, you would have thought I was in the Scottish moores--very pretty w/all the colorful leaves.

Sunday Nov 10, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 50:13 [3] 7.01 mi (7:10 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. to Old Bowie via Tanglewood Park & the RR tracks, into Severn Crossing then trails around Severn Crossing. Back via Cohen Dr., Rte. 564 and across the RR tracks at Springfield Rd. Started easy w/Peggy. It was a warm beautiful day with golden leaves falling.

Saturday Nov 9, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 40:00 [3] 5.75 mi (6:57 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park, MD. w/PGRC. Parked at the Park HQ and ran to the Sweetgum parking lot, then did the Perimeter Trail w/Jim, then back to the Park HQ. I felt very weak the last 2 miles. The trail was soft and I didn't feel my hip too much. Forgot my watch so I'm estimating time.

Friday Nov 8, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 45:13 [2] 6.03 mi (7:30 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., across the RR tracks at Springfield Rd. the roads around the Severn Crossing neighborhood. Was glad to verify that I could get across the tracks easily at night. I wandered looking for new areas to make a loop but mostly had to return the same way I went out.

Weights (Push-up's and sit-up's) 5:00 [3]

30 push-up's and 45 sit-up's.

Thursday Nov 7, 2002 #

Running (Street & Trail) 56:24 [3] 8.4 mi (6:43 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr., Fletchertown Rd. to Bell Station Rd. to the WB&A Trail, to Rte. 450, turn around and go to Hillmeade Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Quill Point Rd. Last did this route in early October. Started slow again. I'd been feeling lazy and less motivated after the US Championships; perhaps the shorter days, the rain and working late earlier in the week did it. I picked it up at the turn around and was only doing about 7:00 minute miles until then. The last mile was in the 6:20's. I'm surprised I was feeling strong for most of the run since I hadn't been running far lately. The night was perfect (in the low 50's) for a run and I felt much better for doing it. My hip had started hurting again since last week--not sure if it's the colder weather or more use. Maybe it's getting old. I ran much faster last year.

Weights (Dumb Bells) 15:00 [3]

Sit-ups, push-ups, and mostly upper body work with dumb bells.

Tuesday Nov 5, 2002 #

Running (Stadium Steps) 31:00 [4] 3.25 mi (9:32 / mi)

From the UMD Track, to Cole Field House, warm-up for 10 minutes running fast around the seats, one circuit of stadium steps for 10 minutes, then another 10 minutes of running fast. It was raining hard again and I got there too late for a longer run because I had to vote.

Sunday Nov 3, 2002 #
