Swimming (River) 5:00 [1]

On the South Fork of the Payette River (Class IV?-II). On a raft trip with Mary Jones, Mike Eglinski, Dan Meenehan and Dick Neuburger we paused to splash around a bit. Dan had the initiative to jump off a 15ft. cliff into the 60F river and I followed. It was very fun!

Running (Street & Trail) 7:44 [3] 1.1 mi (7:02 / mi)

In Boise, ID, a small loop from the hotel near the airport just to loosen-up. It was hot.

Running (Warm-up) 4:00 [2] 0.4 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm-up in Ponderosa Pine State Park near McAll, ID. I had waited about 3 1/2 hours for my start in the relay, anchoring on a red course. It was already getting hot so I didn't warm-up much. I stopped just in-time for Nancy Koehler to hand off to me.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:11:00 [4] 6.2 km (11:27 / km)

US Relay Championships in Ponderosa Pine State Park near McAll, ID. I ran on a 12 point team with Gail Gagarin, Rachael Koehler and Nancy Koehler. Rachael was being very sporting to do the Orange/Yellow 3.2K leg when she had only done White previous to this. She go a little frighted by some elk and a fox but finished in 1 1/2 hours. I got to start 3.5 minutes ahead of the 4th leg mass start. Though I flubbed the first control, I thought I was running better than I did. Some map problems caused me time as it did others. I had 2 bad route choices too. The park was very green and had some physical legs.

Hiking (Day Hike) 2:48:00 [3] 4.5 mi (37:20 / mi) +450m 28:29 / mi

From Lick Rd. parking near McCall, ID. Peggy and I hiked to Duck Lake and then up to the ridge for a view of the surrounding mountains. We probably only got to just under 8,000 ft elevation. I hiked up to a knob with a little rock scrambling. The hike was beautiful! It went through an area recovering from a forest fire 9 years back. The visibility was to the the next mountains. The rocks were bleached white and it felt like going through a garden.

Running (Warm-up) 9:00 [2] 1.25 mi (7:12 / mi)

In Bear Basin Park, near McAll, ID. Warm-up for the A-meet. From the parking to the start and along the road.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:11:57 [4] 7.2 km (10:00 / km)

PNWOF, in Bear Basin Park, near McAll, ID. I started off 2 minutes behind Spike and he caught me by the first control. This was partly due to no one telling me that the actual start triangle was not where they started us from. After that I ran okay but felt the altitude ~5200ft. I made some other mistakes but that only accounted for about 9 minutes. It was fun and pretty with much open running.

Running (Street & Trail) 58:43 [3] 8.25 mi (7:07 / mi)

From the stands at UMD Track, up the Northwest Branch Trail to the end of the pavement and back. Someone turned-on Summer. The ~90F made me head for the woods. I was sluggish from the beginning. Thinking it was the heat, some aching in my right quad told me the effects of the ROGAIN were still being felt. I was only marginally better in the cooler and shady woods. Half mile splits on the trail: 3:35, 3:35, 3:31, 7:22 (28:56) to turnaround, 7:25 back to next marker, 3:33, 3:34, 3:35.

Hiking (Walking) 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Leisurly walk through Bethesda to dinner and back from our friends house on Rosedale Ave. It was nice to stretch a bit.

Orienteering (ROGAIN) 7:57:00 [2] 27.8 km (17:09 / km)

DVOA's ROGAIN at French Creek State Park, PA. Peggy and I had technical problems. We got there late. Our planning time was used for getting the rest of our clothes on and using the facilities. Rushing out at the start, I turned back after a half mile down the trail because I forgot to clear my e-punch card. We later realized that Peggy forgot to clear hers too so we had an unscheduled detour back to the start. The drizzle/rain and slick rock tired me out. I forgot to eat enough and started to bonk with about 1.5 hours to go but eating a cliff bar fixed that within half an hour. We were mostly followed in the last 7 controls by another team. On the way to the last control we got, we lost our punch card but the e-punches were still good. The Lennons (in our division) vouched for us being at control 56 which had gone bad. We still managed to hold it together despite the problems, Peggy's bad knee and other thorny encounters to win the Coed Masters Division. Our route was: 34, 36, 40, 41, 53, 54, 55, 52, 60, 51, 61, 45, 46, 39, 25, 13, back to the Start, 12, 20, 63, 64, 37, 70, 62, 58, 71, 68, 67, 66, 65, 59, 69, 57, 56, 48, 47, 30, 14, Finish

Running (Street & Trail) 52:14 [4] 7.8 mi (6:42 / mi)

From Quill Point Dr. to the WB&A Trail, to the parking lot at Race Track Rd. and back. Home early from work, I ran late any way after doing some gardening. I started slowly and it was about 69F and humid. Measured halves on the trail were: 3:15, 3:23, 3:10, (25:54 half-way) 3:19, 3:23, 3:29. The splits were within 2 seconds each of when I did this run May 29th--all a little slower which reflects the reduced training. My weight this morning was 166 but right after running I was 162.5.

Weights (General) 4:00 [3]

30 pushups and 45 situps both on a slight incline.

Running (Street & Trail) 27:34 [4] 4.18 mi (6:36 / mi)

From the UMD Track near the stands, Adelphi Rd. to Wells Pkwy, to Claggett Rd. to Queens Chapel Rd. to Dartmouth Ave. to College Ave., through the Mall and back just to the track parking lot. I got to practice late. There was a light rain throughout the run and I pushed a bit--faster than in May. The head field maintenance person had kicked everyone off the track citing some melarky about how it's a state law not to have people run on a wet school track... I didn't run yesterday due to working late, then celebrating with Peggy our one year wedding anniversary.

Running (Street & Trail) 1:31:13 [2] 11.65 mi (7:50 / mi)

PGRC Long Run. From the Recreation Center in Old Greenbelt, Crescent Rd. to Ridge Rd. to Research Rd. to Beaverdam Rd. to Pesticide Rd. to Powder Mill Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Cherry Hill Rd. to Springhill Dr. to Breezewood Dr. to Greenbelt Rd. to Lakecrest Dr. once around Greenbelt Lake and to the Recreation Center. I started slow with Peggy, Bob Grumbine and John White. After a mile I ran by myself. I drank every 18 minutes (the water felt heavy) and had a PowerGel near a hour. It was a bit humid but in the mid 70's F. I need some more long running like this and hope work doesn't keep getting in the way.

Bicycling (Road) 20:30 [4] 5.65 mi (3:38 / mi)

Roads around the University of Maryland. I test rode a Cannondale R1000 from the College Park Bicycle store. I'm looking to replace my old Trek 2120. The R1000 was very light. It climbed very well and the bladed spokes made going into the wind seem easy. I almost bought it on the spot but want to test others if I can find them in my size. Time includes some stops & starts.

Running (Trail) 44:00 [3] 5.58 mi (7:53 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park. I got to the PGRC practice late and ran the Perimeter Trail by myself. There were lots of trees down blocking my way. It was still very wet and very slippery too. It looked like a rainforest with the sun filtering through the mist and the trees and the leaves glistening wet.

Running (Street & Trail) 6:11 [3] 0.92 mi (6:43 / mi)

In Bowie, MD. From Quill Point Dr., once around the block and add-on Quarum Pl./Quest La. It was hotter than it was in Texas.

Running (Street & Trail) 36:02 [4] 5.35 mi (6:44 / mi)

In Fort Worth, TX. From the parking lot at River Park along the Trinity River, SE on the Trinity Trail to River Park Rd. and back. The paved trail ended after about 1 mile (upstream and with the wind) but continued through a gated residential neighborhood (apparantly common here) along the river. At River Park Rd. the trail started again but I had a friend from work who was waiting for me to return for dinner so I turned back there (18:36). On the return, I pushed a little, feeling better than yesterday (it was a cool windy 75F and had rained earlier) but a little sore too.

Running (Trail) 35:06 [4] 5.0 mi (7:01 / mi)

In Fort Worth, TX. From the parking at River Park near Bryant Irvin Rd., NE on the Trinity Trail. I ran almost half a mile past Hulen St. (17:12). It was sunny and very hot--about 30F hotter than I've been used to. The 95F wind blew behind me about 20mph on the way out. It melted me coming back. Here for work I had some dinner obligations and a late tour that kept me too full to run the last two days.

Orienteering (Competition) 57:37 [4] 6.66 km (8:39 / km)

At Patuxent River Park (Jug Bay), MD. QOC's Beer Chase. Mass start with 3 loops and 4 beers on a forked course. I ran okay but got confused again about which leg I was on. This contributed to Eddie passing me and placing 4th. It was fun and not too wet on the course--even with the unmapped pond crossings.

Running (Street & Trail) 38:20 [4] 5.65 mi (6:47 / mi)

In Greenbelt Park, with PGRC. We did the hilly Saturday road route in the park to Goodluck and through the campground. It was pouring rain but warm. Tim Fukawa-Connely's and my feet were feeling heavy in the first quarter mile from the rain falling on top of our shoes. We took off fast (13:13 at Good Luck Rd.) but his 15 mile run the previous day saved me from having to do the pace the whole way. I've been poorly motivated lately--a combination of working late, bad sleep patterns gloomy weather and stress.

Running (Street & Trail) 41:11 [4] 6.5 mi (6:20 / mi)

From UMD Track parking, to the Paint Branch Trail, to Cherry Hill Rd. and back. Everyone else from PGRC ran in Cole Field House because it had been raining. It stopped when I got started and was cool out. I felt good from the rest (I dug a garden bed both days) I took to heal the injuries from the weekend so I pushed this a bit. The available measured half-miles on the trail were: 3:16, 3:09, 3:11, 3:08 out to turn around for 1:39 (20:50) and then 1:36, 3:06, 3:09, 3:05, 3:06. I seem to be getting faster though I'm running less, just like last year at this time.

Weights (General) 1:00 [3]

30 pushups.
