Running (Street & Trail) 42:58 [4] 6.8 mi (6:19 / mi)

From the UMD Track (stadium/shelter side), to the Paint Branch Trail, north to Cherry Hill Rd., then back. 6:58 from the track to the first mile marker on the trail, measureable half miles: 3:16, 3:10, 3:13, 3:09, 1:39 to the turnaround at 21:27, 1:39 to the next marker, 3:10, 3:11, 3:04, 3:07, 7:17 up the hill to the track. I was tired going up the hill to the finish and my right leg hurt. My back/hip was better but could be felt a little starting-off. I didn't feel it after a while nor after the run. In the +85 degree temp. and high humidity, with little training lately, I expected to run much slower and surprised myself. It's as if the less I practice, the faster I run. On the run, I kept thinking I was slowing down so I pushed a little more each time. In reality, I was going faster and faster. This can't continue indefinately.

Running (Trail) 42:26 [4] 6.2 mi (6:51 / mi)

Between my work schedule, moving to Bowie and wedding planning I'm still not getting enough time to train. Greenbelt Park; From Sweetgum Parking, Perimeter Trail backwards to the Dogwood Trail; half a loop of that to the Perimeter Trail again then back to the Sweetgum parking lot. I could feel my back/hip problem in the beginning but it wasn't a problem.

Running (Trail) 7:43 [4] 1.2 mi (6:26 / mi)

Azaelea Trail Loop in Greenbelt Park with Howard from PGRC. Howard wanted to get some extra hill work and I need the miles.

Running (Street & Trail) 1:06:03 [4] 9.8 mi (6:44 / mi)

From UMD Track (parking lot): To the Northwest Branch Trail, to the Northeast Branch Trail, to Haig Rd., to Riverdale Rd., through the College Park metro station tunnel, to College Ave. to the UMD campus, across The Quad and past Cole Field House to the track. I felt strong starting off. It was gently downhill on the NW Branch Trail to the NE Branch Trail, then slightly uphill and in the wind. I slowed on the NE Branch Trail, then significantly more so on roads back to campus. Measurable miles: 6:37, 6:35, 6:29, 6:23, 6:39, 6:44.

Running (Other) 3:30 [3] 0.3 mi (11:40 / mi)

Running through the halls at work in USDA--had to go back and get my keys which I'd left at work after eating and shopping w/my parents for wedding stuff. No time for a real workout lately.

Orienteering (Competition) 1:19:55 [4] 7.5 km (10:39 / km)

DVOA's Mt. Penn A-Meet. Got to the start just in-time to go--no warm-up. Made an early big mistake on #2 but had fun racing with Peggy and Daniel Schaublin much of the way. See Split List.

Saturday May 18, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 6:00 [3] 0.7 mi (8:34 / mi)

This was just a warm-up for the US Short Course Championship. I wanted to warm-up more but got to the start too late. I hadn't worked-out (except for moving boxes and furniture) the previous 3 days due to moving from Greenbelt to Bowie.

Orienteering (Competition) 39:11 [3] 3.6 km (10:53 / km)

US Short Course Championships. I'd been feeling stronger from cycling and resting my legs the last 3 days however, I made some several easy mistakes. See the Split List

Running (Street & Trail) 54:09 [4] 8.15 mi (6:39 / mi)

From the UMD Track (bleacher end) out to the Northwest Branch Trail, north on it to the end of the pavement, then back. I estimated the total distance. It might have been more given the measured miles. I wasn't sure of my pace starting-off. My back hurt a little to begin with but loosend as my legs (which were tight from cycling) did. On the few half mile markers that were available, I did 3:21, 3:17, 3:15, 6:47 out to the turn around for a half-way of 27:11, 6:49 back to the next half mile marker, 3:17, 3:15, 3:15. It was very windy but mostly protected in the stream valley. My back didn't hurt too much afterward as had been usual before.

Bicycling (Road) 1:14:33 [3] 24.5 mi (3:03 / mi)

Windsor Green to Crescent Dr. to Edmonston Rd. to Odell Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Powder Mill. Rd. to Laurel-Bowie Rd. to Bowie State U. to the WB&A Trail to Daisy La. to Rte. 193 to Windsor Green. Very windy out with a headwind all the way back from Bowie. Funnel cloud cited 10 miles away in Rockville but I never got rained on.

Sunday May 12, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 31:00 [2] 9.0 mi (3:27 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Ridge Rd. to Research Rd. to Beaverdam Rd. to Kennilworth Rd. to Crescent Rd. to Windsor Green. Very windy. Just wanted to get in some easy miles before a busy Mother's Day. My legs are still tired and sore.

Saturday May 11, 2002 #

Running (Trail) 37:42 [4] 5.57 mi (6:46 / mi)

Perimeter Trail with PGRC. There was good turnout but I was alone the whole way on the Perimeter Trail from the Sweetgum parking area. I felt spritely in the cool air but got tired on the longer hills; still feeling Wednesday's workout. I slowed the last half but don't remember running it this fast in recent years.

Bicycling (Commute) 15:01 [3] 4.0 mi (3:45 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrolton. I missed yesterday partly due to the rain and working late. I also needed the rest because though I felt better today, I still felt tired. 1:10 for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 56:14 [3] 15.8 mi (3:34 / mi)

From New Carrollton, MLK to the WB&A Trail to Hillmeade Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Duckettown Rd. to Good Luck Rd. to Windsor Green, Greenbelt. Went the long way to test-out a possible commute route. It wasn't that great due to a lot of traffic. I was tired by the end of this and weak on hills. 2:15 for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 14:25 [3] 4.0 mi (3:36 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrollton. Calm winds & pleasant temp. Felt pretty good. 40 sec. for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 16:30 [3] 4.0 mi (4:08 / mi)

New Carrollton to Greenbelt. Was tired from yesterday and had some headwinds. 1:50 for TL's. Home early to get passport.

Bicycling (Road) 11:03 [3] 3.3 mi (3:21 / mi)

Ride to start of Potomac Peddler's Ride. Thought they would leave a 6pm and was going to be late a couple minutes so I went to head them off. The faster group actually started at 6:30pm so I had plenty of time and had to wait afterwards. Greenbelt/Windsor Green to Cherry Hill via Crescent Rd. to Ivy Lane. Had the wind.

Bicycling (Road) 1:13:00 [4] 25.3 mi (2:53 / mi)

Road w/Potomac Peddlers Touring Club (PPTC). Edmonston to Beaverdam to Springfield to Duckettown, to Highbridge, to Prospect Hill, to 564 to Good Luck to Beaverdam to Springfield to Edmonston. Rode in a pack of about 7. I pulled the line more than my share but by the end I was tired. Had trouble w/my cycle computer so I started my clock about 2.3 miles late, and had to do some estimate for the total time but not the total distance. The measured part averaged 21.0mph but we were going much faster most of the time. My legs were definately tired after this. It's nice to be going this fast this early in the season. It was windy. The thunderstorms held-off. In the pace line the wind wasn't as big a factor.

Bicycling (Road) 10:30 [3] 2.5 mi (4:12 / mi)

Warm-down ride home after the PPTC ride--Ivy Lane to Windsor Green. I rode w/Dan on the way back and got a little faster than I wanted.

Running (Street & Trail) 44:35 [4] 6.65 mi (6:42 / mi)

From UMD Track, to the Paint Branch Trail, to Cherry Hill Rd. and back. I felt tight in the beginning and my back hurt some just walking before running. Going downhill I eventually loosened-up more. The trail is now officially open again. A tornado last fall had made some nice shady section very sunny. The park service also cut down a lot of trees that were probably damadged and dangerous, making the change looking even more severe. The available measured half-miles on the trail were: 3:28, 3:22, 3:24, 3:18 out to turn around for 1:45 and then 1:39, 3:18, 3:21, 3:15, 3:15. The biking appears to be paying-off so I'll keep doing more of it and less running until my back can heal. My back hurt more right at the tail after cooling down from the run.

Bicycling (Commute) 16:05 [3] 4.0 mi (4:01 / mi)

Greenbelt to New Carrolton. Slight head wind. 1:42 for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 44:51 [3] 10.5 mi (4:16 / mi)

From New Carrollton, roads around New Carrollton, Ardwick Ardmore, MLK Hwy., B&A Trail and Rte. 193 to Greenbelt. I was checking alternate commuting routes for when I move. I'm estimating the distance.

Sunday May 5, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 1:05:22 [4] 22.1 mi (2:57 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Good Luck Rd. to Rte. 564 to Rte 193. to Highbridge Rd. to Rte. 450, to Church Road, to Woodmore Rd. to Lotsford Vista, to Ardwick Ardmore Rd. to Whitfield Chapel Rd. to Princess Garden Pkwy. to Windsor Green. I was tired from doing chores all morning. However, the ride refreshed me. I was doing 21.0 mph until at least the 11.7 mile point and 20.5mph until the last half mile. The slight headwind and hills on the return slowed me to 20.3mph round-trip. Encouraging.

Bicycling (Commute) 15:25 [3] 4.0 mi (3:51 / mi)

Today is National Bike to Work Day. Greenbelt to New Carrollton. Had a tailwind and nice 58 degree temp. 1:30 for TL's.

Bicycling (Commute) 16:32 [3] 4.0 mi (4:08 / mi)

New Carrollton to Greenbelt. Very windy (headwind) and I was a little tired on hills. 40 seconds for TL's.

Thursday May 2, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 1:12:30 [4] 23.66 mi (3:04 / mi)

From Trailside Park in Herndon, VA on the W&OD Trail to to Lawson Rd. in Leesburg, VA. Thunderstorms had past earlier so it was warm humid and still windy. Steady 20mph crosswinds gave me a little push going out but slowed me coming back. My avg. speed was 20.4mph going out but round-trip only 19.7mph. Traffic stop signs slowed me too. I'm definately not in-shape but this is encouraging even for a flatish route. I can keep riding w/o aggrivating my hip and back injury.

Wednesday May 1, 2002 #

Bicycling (Road) 1:02:02 [3] 19.6 mi (3:10 / mi)

From Windsor Green, Research Rd. to Beaverdam Rd. to Edmonston Rd. to Odell Rd. to Murikirk Rd. to Odell Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Good Luck Rd. to Windsor Green. Legs felt weak. It was slightly windy and in the low 60's or upper 50's.
