Bicycling (Trailer) 47:11 [2] 7.89 mi (5:59 / mi)
slept:4.2

From Rosedale Ave., Max and I rode down to Rock Creek Park, went south to the DC/MD border, turned back, stopped at the Candy Cane playground, then rode home. It was rather pleasant out--overcast and cool with a sea breeze from the approaching hurricane weather. Peggy is out for a work trip so at the playground Max and I stayed late and worked-up a good appetite chasing each other.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:27:30 [2] *** 5.75 km (25:39 / km)
spiked:4/12c slept:5.0 weight:172.5lbs (sick)

Wheaton Regional Park, MD. With little time to setup for QOC's opening meet this Sunday, I tried to check control locations and layout streamers for some of the controls which I thought would be the hardest to place out, site-unseen, on Sunday morning. I started with one of the harder ones. The map showed the woods there to be open with a trail nearby. However, there were all sorts of downed trees nearby and no trail. I had trouble knowing where I was and kept losing my place on the map. Then next one went better but the white woods shown on the map there turned out to be light green to green with seasonal undergrowth and decaying branches. The next control should have been easy with a very solid attack point less than 50m away but it was thick getting through a green portion of woods and again the white woods were really green. Going out of there to confirm my location, I did something weird and ended up on the wrong trail. Two more controls went similarly before I got onto a better track. It was rather hot and humid for starting after 9:30pm with no breeze so I felt very fatigued the rest of the way. Probably being sick and not sleeping enough contributed to the difficulties. As thick as the woods were, the hurricane rains expected should make it harder.

Running (Trail) 40:14 [3] 4.65 mi (8:39 / mi) +171m 7:46 / mi
slept:5.25 weight:172.5lbs

From the Woodley Park Metro Station, I ran down into Rock Creek Park, crossed through Dumbarton Oaks to Glover Archbold Park via the Dumbarton Oaks Trail and the Wesley Heights Trail. From there, I ran up the Glover Archbold Trail out to the Tenleytown Metro Station via Van Ness St. and Wisconsin Ave. This was a hilly route. It was hot and humid too. I passed one runner somewhat slowly on the Glover Archbold Trail then felt obliged to maintain an effort level least I get passed back on the sometimes steep climbs. I couldn't stop sweating once in the metro station and messed up my Rubik's cube that I was getting close to solving because I was so tired (A friend at work lended me a small one. I had known how to solve these years ago but I've forgotten some of the moves I made-up years ago. Now developing new perhaps more efficient methods).

Running (Street & Trail) 5:25 [2] 0.66 mi (8:13 / mi)

From the NIH Metro Station to Rosedale Ave. via Jones Bridge Rd. and Maryland Ave. I ran up the steps almost all the way and was rather winded. I walked a bit and jogged home thirsty, phlemy and wet.

Running (Trail) 29:32 [3] 3.75 mi (7:53 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:172.5lbs

Cabin John Park, MD. Peggy and I took turns running in Cabin John Park while Max enjoyed the playground. When it was my turn, I was already feeling low on blood sugar, having mowed the lawn earlier and waited out Peggy's turn running. I ran up the Cabin John Trail. The blazes are poorly done north of Tuckerman La. I ran to one dead end on the east side of the creek, came back and crossed on a trail to the other; then went north again. The trail split twice more. The blazes ran out and I ended up at a housing development with an uncerimonious trail end/head. Going back I tried to stay on the west side of the creek. The trail kept going for a while. There were some double blazes but no evident turns so I kept going. The trail ran out and I ran over some open woods to the next reentrant then crossed the creek back to the campground road. This area has some decent features. It's enough at least for another local map if we ever get enough time to map it. I was pretty tired earlier in the day. The cold is lingering in my sinus and I had to take a nap.

Orienteering race (Foot) 20:17 [4] *** 2.87 km (7:04 / km) +70m 6:18 / km
spiked:8/10c slept:5.0 weight:175lbs

QOC Summer Series, Sprint 1 at Glendening Preserve near Bristol, MD. It's always fun to go to a new area. I like this kind of course with the flat open woods. It's very fast. Still one needs to keep a straight bearing and be able to read the trail. The contours actually did help too. I got there a bit late with Max. Peggy had gone there earlier w/Valarie to setup (controls and e-punch). As soon as I could get ready, I went out. I had hardly any warm-up but with the temperature pushing 90F, I probably didn't need much of one. I started okay then kept changing my mind on the way to #1. I had similar bobbles going to #2 and climbed much more than was necessary. After that it was fast and mostly straight. I saw Mark Mace who was trying to recover after an error going to #9. See the Split List for more. I was 3rd fastest for the course out of about 13 people. My cold has subsided though there's still some phlem in the sinuses.

Orienteering race (Foot) 25:14 [4] 2.97 mi (8:30 / mi) +40m 8:09 / mi
spiked:7/9c

QOC Summer Series, Sprint 2 at Glendening Preserve near Bristol, MD. I'm not sure how much time was in-between the races. I could have used a toilet and this bothered me later. I started this one in the middle of those who came. I had heard that Ted had troubles at #8 before going out. I was a bit slow to #1 mainly because I was reading the map incorrectly--I thought the control was on the same side of the large reentrant that I approached. The next few were fast. Dave Pruden messed it up worse and I almost caught him there. I missed a little at #2 mainly because the vegetation was closer together than the map showed the clearing to be. Eddie Bergeron caught me just before getting to #3 and I briefly passed Dave there. I was slow to orient my map and didn't bother trying to chase Eddie without getting my own route decided upon first. Dave got ahead of me either because he was quicker at the route decisions or because he was aiming to stay in contact with Eddie. We ran in the same order until #7 when I got to the control just ahead of Dave and then took off. Dave slowed after this. Either he had a good strategy of letting me make a mistake first, or he just needed time to plan this one. #8 was in a tricky area where pine vegetation and fields were the only features nearby. By this time, I'd forgotten hearing about Ted's trouble. I entered the area just at where I had entered when approaching #5, then emerged well past the control. I hunted for a while, seeing Dave run off at one point. Eventually I came in from 100m to the east where I could make more sense of the vegetation mapping. Kris Beecroft was just behind me briefly but she was going to #5. I hit #9 after passing #5 and went on to finish w/o further error. See the Split List. It was good to get a nice workout in, especially since I haven't been doing much lately. I actually ran harder and faster on this run but the error at #8 doesn't show it. I'm still having left hamstring issues but didn't feel it during this race.

slept:6.0 weight:176lbs (sick)

I had some errands to do so I left work early, finished my errands and did some mapping in the Civic Center Park in Rockville, MD. I started from Mark Twain School and Park and hoped to cover things in Rock Creek Park. First however, I wanted to finish the Civic Center Park south of here. It took longer than I thought. I got to some areas that I hadn't had a chance to cover earlier. Though I covered a bunch of ground. There's still a little bit more. I also fixed a few things in areas that I'd already been through. It's a lot of work to cover all of a park. It seems that in every place that I hadn't got into deeply before that there are more hidden features. My cold is starting to dry up but it still keep me tired.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:07 [4] 11.63 mi (3:11 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:176lbs

From Rosedale Ave. in Bethesda, MD to C St. SW in Washington, D.C. I intended to take it easy and was doing so initially. A headwind was slowing me up anyway. After Massachusets Ave., another guy caught me so I tucked-in behind him all the way to Georgetown. He had a large frame which gave me a good block to hide behind. He was pulling up to 22-25mph down the grade, then 22-23 on the flats. I eased back after we split.

Bicycling 41:37 [3] 11.37 mi (3:40 / mi)
(sick)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. I felt tired from the morning ride starting out and had a headwind to Georgetown. I think a cold I just caught was taking a toll. Taking it easy, I got passed by a guy so I got in his draft. He didn't mind and cruised just under 20mph on the flats and 17-18mph up the grade. We passed many and eventually picked up a third person who got in behind me. Rather out of shape, I only managed to trade one pull but the stronger rider appreciated it. As we approached the ramp to go over River Rd. we started passing another rider who was on our right. Two other riders were coming down the ramp the opposite direction. I thought I cleared ahead of the guy we were passing but just as we hit the ramp, the lead cyclist slowed, thus slowing me and then he moved to the right. I needed to move right too with the others coming down the ramp from the other direction headed right at me so I did; not too quickly or all the way. My attention was drawn forward toward oncoming cyclists but the guy we were passing on my right must have been there still. He was probably overlapping part of my wheel so he got cut off. We climbed the bridge ramp and the guy who got cut off got all huffy. He turned out to be racer. I apologized sincerely but he wasn't the type to hear it. It was road rage on the bike trail and we kept riding. He started saying stuff that I had hardly heard since high school. Maybe he was on steroids. A second apology wasn't enough. He went on to try convincing the other two riders about how insignificant I was as if he could never make such a mistake. The others would have none of it and returned complaints to him now because he was making so much cacophony and had moved ahead slowing us up. It all ended as we split up in Bethesda. I thanked the guy I had drafted and he exchanged a smile and a 'you are welcome' wave. I suppose on what I'm told is the 3rd most popular bicycle commute route in the country that one is going to have such days. I wonder where the guy I offended got the idea to turn what was worthy of sympathy into total disdain from those who were there.

Bicycling (Trailer) 22:49 [2] 3.58 mi (6:22 / mi)
slept:3.8 weight:177lbs

From Rosedale Ave., Bethesda MD, riding around the neighborhood with Max in tow. We went after I got back from work. Max fussed about wearing his helmet but submitted and kept it on. He hooted in the tunnels and was happy getting to the playground. He even let me put the helmet back on w/o much trouble. Max had been pretty happy this morning and after work to see me return from a week in Colorado.

Running warm up/down (Trail) 5:00 [2] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:51:05 [4] ***** 8.29 km (13:24 / km) +290m 11:24 / km

U.S. Classic Orienteering Championships Day 2. San Isabel National Forest, on The Big Sandy map near Buena Vista, CO. It was a rough day for me. I started anticipating a good hard through grassier and flatter terrain than the day before. Instead, it turned out to be a very technical map which was printed a bit on the light side. I also was anticipating some close competition with Tapio and Steve Greg who both started just ahead. To make it more enticing, Tapio had a two minute lead on me from the day before and was sitting in 3rd place for the M45+ category with me 4th. I started not so great but managed to catch Tapio by the 2nd control. There I wandered 20 minutes making poor attacks and getting tired out. I had other troubles too due mainly to not making good plans before trying to execute. I found it very difficult to read the rock detail and relied a lot on contours. I still managed to enjoy myself which is why I came though I'd really like a shot at redemption on this map. See the Split List.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:07:10 [4] **** 7.17 km (9:22 / km) +390m 7:22 / km
spiked:7/13c

U.S. Classic Championships, Buena Vista, CO. I felt the 10,000ft. elevation. The early part of the course was fast and it winded me. I ran after all the other men in M40+ and M45+ and then all the W21 women had started. My start time was pushed back half an hour because there were two Red runner scheduled for the same slot. I caught an traded leads with Kesenya Popova through #7 as I made mistakes at #5 and then #6. I then got ahead of her on the hilly and technical areas. My total error time is estimated at 5.5 minutes which historically is not bad for me. It was fun and I think I was the 4th fastest in the M45+ category. See the Split List.

Orienteering (Foot) 37:25 [2] *** 1.3 km (28:47 / km)
spiked:5/5c slept:5.5

Buena Vista, CO. After catching a ride from the airport rental car area with Tom and Karen Strat, I ran the model event for the U.S. Championships through the 5 controls; 550m in about 9 minutes. It was mostly rocky downhill and controls were arranged almost in a linear fashion. I took my time after that going to different features. The map showed rock and contours mostly as I expected to see them though there was some variation in how boulders and dot knolls were mapped. Where there was lots of rock, some boulders weren't mapped. Were there was little, the same size boulders were mapped. The vegetation mapping was not what I expected. Scattered trees often appeared white and scattered tree areas were printed very lightly. Gullies and ditches were not mapped with the symbols for these. Rather they were often represented with contour lines or formlines. After finishing, a storm came in and hail covered the ground.

Buena Vista, CO. After hooking up with Ted Good, we went back to the model area for the U.S. Champs and went through the area. We discussed the mapping with others that we encountered and mostly walked back up to the start. This area is around 10,000 ft. in elevation and I felt much more winded than earlier in the week. The model event was just a bit east of the areas where the Red course last year finished. Sam Listwak had brought along the map from then and it was clear that much field checking had been done. Many people were still less than completely happy with the mapping.

slept:4.5

Boulder, CO. From Chataqua, I hiked with a work colleage (at his pace) up next to the Flatirons. We went after work and it took a while getting there. Headed to Royal Arch, we ran out of daylight just before acquiring the ridge and had to turn back. It was rather nice anyway. We watched thunderstorms flash across the front range all the way to Fort Collins as we walked back.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:36:05 [4] **** 8.78 km (10:57 / km)
spiked:4/10c slept:5.0 weight:176.5lbs

U.S. Night Orienteering Championships on the Lights of Cheyenne map which is east of Laramie, WY. I flew out in the morning having the fortune of a work conference scheduled in Fort Collins, CO. I didn't expect much knowing my lack of training and poor physical shape. Surprisingly the 7,700ft. altitude didn't phase me much. I guess I was already anticipating just having a nice time and didn't push much initially. I didn't even warm-up, wanting just to conserve energy. A coldish wind had everyone seeking cover while waiting to go (first starts were a 9:00pm and I started at 9:58pm) but was fine while running--eventually. On the way to #2, still not warmed-up, I ran harder in the open fields, to warm-up and ended up with a bad bearing. It lost me 10 minutes. I made similar boo boos at #4 (3 minutes lost) and #5 (4 minutes lost). I feel very silly for the error on #5 since I got drawn-off by what seemed to be another control. Finally from #7 onward, I started spiking controls and running a decent pace to them. It was too little, too late but I enjoyed the event. See the Split List.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 1:30:00 [1] 2.8 km (32:09 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:175lbs

Blockhouse Conservation Park, Potomac MD. Max (in a backpack) and I hiked around this nice park off the Potomac River to do some mapping. Max was pretty patient and even fell asleep for a while. He observed the sights and sounds of the forest commenting with gestures at times at the birds, large rootstocks, big drop-offs and water sounds (he liked these the best). At times he wanted to direct me to go hither and thither. He laughed when I stumped my toe on unseen fallen branches and rocks on slopes, not realizing that he'd tumble too if I fell. I got a nice amount done with him and might have gotten more if not for leaves brushing against him awakening him. It's a very nice park with lots of great orienteering features. The open woods are the best. The hills are steep, and the green areas manageable. It's still great weather for August with low humidity.

Running (Babyjogger) 38:25 [3] 4.8 mi (8:00 / mi)
slept:6.75 weight:175lbs

From Wexford Rd., to Cedar Rd. via the Rock Creek Trail, then back to the Ken-Gar parking lot. It was a great morning for August. starting out The temperatures were in the low 60's F and the humidity was low too. Max wore a jacket. Of course we played afterward. Available mile splits: 8:01, 7:52, 8:04.

My left hamstring had been feeling very tight the last few days. I think this is leftover stuff from what started as lower back trouble. Stretching only seemed like the right thing to do and helped initially. However it also only made it tighter afterward. Bending down is still a caution inducing activity. Working late and eating desserts hasn't helped much either.

From Rosedale Ave. in Bethesda, MD to C St. SW in Washington, D.C. I pushed a little but rode a short way chatting with a guy about my low-riding front panniers. These seem to attract a lot of inquiry. Another guy asked me similar questions just last Friday. There were strong southwestern headwinds toward the end along the water.

Bicycling (Commute) 42:23 [4] 11.64 mi (3:38 / mi)
(injured)

From C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Rosedale Ave., Bethesda, MD. Having checked the radar I got out of the office knowing there was a good chance that I'd encounter a fast developing thunderstorm. It was around 92F and very humid. I had a tailwind along the water in D.C. but some headwinds once past Georgetown. It turned out that I only got sprinkled on as I followed behind the storm. I made an effort to work harder but was slow and tired.

Later in the evening after finishing, I did some stretching to workout a tight hamstring--something leftover from the recent back problems I had.

From Rosedale Ave. Max and I went down the Georgetown Branch Trail and over Rock Creek to East-West Hwy. then up the Rock Creek Trail and Beach Dr. to Ken-Gar Park. It was a treat to have a 70F morning. Max did well at first and enjoyed the view from the railway bridge overlooking Rock Creek. We stopped at a playground but because it was wet with dew I soon took him away to get to another. This didn't go over well and he refused to wear his helmet. I got it on but he was successful two more times at removing it before we got to Ken-Gar and met Peggy. We did get to the playground there too.

Orienteering (Foot) 53:26 [3] 4.55 km (11:45 / km)

QOC Summer Short Series on the Squirrel Olympics map. The event was preceded and followed by several non-Olympic sports such as shooting free throws (5 for 10), croquet (tied second to last due to a bad initial start), standing broad jump (86 inches; not the ~108 I used to be able to do), plastic golf ball driving (3rd place?), disc golf, soccer, dandilion pulling, air hockey (I won the tournament) and foozball. My game skills just weren't up to what they used to be.

The all important orienteering was also preceded by a quiz. It wasn't on the clock so I was about last to leave what otherwise would have been a mass start. Ted had explained that the map was in poor shape due to a major LIDAR based revision being in progress and that it was also greener than mapped. Upon getting my map, I realized I had a bad copy with no route lines. I lost about 40 seconds getting this sorted out so my official time was longer--despite my entry donation, my protest failed but it didn't lose me any places. A little delay ocurred after #1 when Keg Good and Tim Blaisdale questioned the next control on the map and I thought they might have had the same trouble that I had. I went back to verify but lost 30-40 seconds in the process. What may have made me lose me places was a big error out of #5. I was closing-in on the lead pack who had left #5 about a minute ahead when I read the next leg incorrectly and headed toward #3 again. I realized the error after nearly getting to #3 then thought to correct by going straight across the mixed white/green woods shown on the map--I'd forgotten that squirrels weren't the only things killed in these woods. I got hung-up on greenbriar and to avoid more of it I ran off the map. There I hooked-up with Dave Onkst who'd already run a 50K mountain trail race earlier in the day. Eventually I found the control. The 870m leg took me 17:23. I wasn't exactly clean the rest of the way but finished without much fanfare. My time got me 3rd place to Tom and Andy Strat. Both of them had also won the overall Olympics.

From Rosedale Ave. in Bethesda, MD to C St. SW in Washington, D.C. I pushed a little and rode all alone. There was debris on the trail from the storm and a bit of headwind the last few miles.
