Orienteering (Field Checking) 4:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (1:20:00 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:178lbs

Lake Bernard Frank, MD. Starting from Sweetbirch Dr. on the east side of the park, I covered areas south to just beyond Sunfish Pond and the Sunfish Trail. A sign at Sweetbirch Dr. warned people of deer culling going from after 5:30pm till sunrise all the way through March. The population control is new to many areas of Montgomery County where it was not allowed earlier. While I think the park can sustain a population and reach equilibrium, there are large herds which have probably been losing habitat elswhere, like from the Inter-County Connector properties that are being constructed upon now. I guess that these have been seeking refuge in the park pushing the population to a bad state.

It was breezy and in the 20s F starting off but I wore enough to keep me plenty warm. The difficulty today was the coating of ice. The snow last week followed by freezing rain, then freezing and re-freezing has left a glazed sheet of ice coving the ground. In many place it was thin enough, especially on the sunny slopes, to crunch through it but in on trails or other areas, it wouldn't budge with weight. I only fell once and not too badly but it was enough to make my knee hurt a bit.

I covered some fair areas of nice woods along with other stuff. It was difficult to decide how to show an area which had patchy green areas with patchy clearings and other white and light green parts all intermixed. I found a lot more man made objects too. I still have areas of green to cover in getting the Lake Frank areas finished but the parts I started checking on the south side of stream near Sunfish Pond are more uniform and should be easier. I covered one hill there with fairly nice white woods and some scattered boulders.

Running (Street & Trail) 29:17 [3] 3.65 mi (8:01 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:177.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., to the Huntington Pkwy, to Irvington Ave., to Folkstone Rd. to Ewing Dr. to Bradmoor Dr. to Ridge Pl. onto the school trail to Bulls Run Dr. and Adelaide Dr., to Wilmett Rd. to Beech Ave. to Old Georgetown Rd. to Glenbrook Rd. to Moorland Ln. to Northfield Rd. I went out at around 10pm. I slowed often to make sure that I didn't slip on the partly icy spots. It was about 31F with a slight breeze so things were slick at times; especially where it had been shady.

Bicycling (Stationary) 1:00:00 [3]
slept:5.6 weight:177lbs

The ground conditions are improving but still not so good outside. I was a bit more tired doing this riding than the day before but it went fairly well. The worst is that my rear end is still adapting and that's not been much of an issue. I find it harder to sit on a stationary bike for an hour than to ride one outside for that long.

Bicycling (Stationary) 1:00:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:176.5lbs

With more freezing rain going on outdoors, it was an easy decision to ride indoors. I felt a bit stronger. The time was going quickly with the movie I watched so I rode for an hour. I hadn't done that in what is probably several years. I usually get too bored or fatigued in other ways. Later, I had some milk and ate too many of the yummy brownies with nuts that Peggy and Max had made.

Bicycling (Stationary) 30:00 [3]
slept:5.0 weight:177lbs

With the icy streets and sidewalks, I just rode inside. We had about an inch or two of snow followed by freezing rain.

Monday Jan 26, 2009 #

Bicycling (Stationary) 30:00 [3]
slept:6.25 weight:177lbs

I rode inside partly to make sure my plan to increase running miles is gradual. I watched a movie.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:32:09 [4] *** 9.43 km (9:46 / km) +280m 8:31 / km
ahr:158 max:176 spiked:18/22c slept:6.5 weight:176lbs

QOC Greenbelt Park: It seemed like a long time since I last had an orienteering race and I enjoyed the break. I picked up a few pounds over the holidays putting me at a rather normal weight for this time of year but it was still much less than levels I was at in much of 2008.

I was probably the last to start and started the first few controls feeling a need to pace myself. The distance of this race should be a good start to building a better base for later season races. I've been in Greenbelt Park so many times that I feel I shouldn't make any errors but I did anyway. The course set by the QOC Juniors was pretty fun and a bit different. I stuck to trails when possible but in some cases like going to #7 and #19 a straighter route would have been better. I reasoned both that when feeling in a not-so-good shape it's best to run smooth on easier terrain going around and to not risk getting my feet wet on a cold day (both control legs that I erred on crossed Still Creek). I made errors on #7, #9, and going to #22. The vegetation has changed a bit here and there. The contours on this map could use some updating too. The newly added blue root stocks didn't register in my head until looking at the map after the event. More comments in the Split List.

It's time to retire this pair of O' shoes. The balls of my feet were hurting at times though it was probably partly due to the more frozen ground.

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 8:00 [2] 0.82 mi (9:45 / mi)
weight:176lbs

Warm-up for the QOC meet in Greenbelt Park. Most of this was a run to the Holly Knoll bathrooms since the facility in the Sweetgum parking area was closed.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:4.5 weight:175lbs

45 situps. I stayed up too late playing with Max's Legos. Max wanted a tractor trailer truck and I accomodated his request. I never had legos when growing up so it was kind of fun to use it as a new art form...

Running (Street & Trail) 21:56 [3] 2.85 mi (7:42 / mi)
slept:5.3 weight:175lbs

From the Friendship Heights Metro Station, Western Ave. to Friendship Blvd. to Willard Ave. to N. Park Ave., through Somerset Park, to Warwick Pl. to Dorset Ave. to the Little Falls Trail, to Hillandale Rd. through the Bethesda Pool parking lot, to the Capital Crescent Trail to Bethesda Ave. to Woodmont Ave. to the Bethesda Metro Station. This was a slowish generally uphill run after work in the dark. I wasn't feeling used to running at night or running much at all. It took a long time to start feeling warm. It was supposed to be right around freezing but winds were reported to be 15mph. Though I was often sheltered, I was generally running into it.

I was going to run around The Mall at work but thought better of it. It was partly because I was feeling cold in my office and I knew it was coldish outside. I'd also walked around at lunch and saw lots of tourists moving around between the trucks doing clean-up of the Inaugural celebrations. I've seen the aftermath of many, many celebrations such as the big Forth of July's, the Million Man March, Pro Choice and Right-for-Life rallies (but not the farmer tractor protest). This one had the most impact on The Mall. I saw grass in all the usual places last week but mostly it was gone, not just flattened but with bare dirt visible over vast stretches. It was hard packed and flattened too so if you rolled a ball, it would go a long way. It was all the more remarkable since it was not muddy, the ground was a bit frozen and there was no summer heat to kill things. The dirt was visible as far as I could see from the Washington Monument to the Capital building. Some participants that I overheard talked about it being so packed with people that if you sneezed and moved your arms it would send waves through the crowd. They said there was a lot of pushing but that people didn't seem to mind.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:23:00 intensity: (2:08:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) 3.0 mi (47:40 / mi)
slept:7.0

Lake Bernard Frank, MD. I continued field checking areas north of the lake and on the east side of North Branch Creek. I checked my drafting of some areas that I covered last Saturday and got to some new terrain too. I found more scattered clearings and more white woods than I expected. There were a few old barbed wire fences too. The light snow from the day before hadn't melted at all. I haven't been able to find my Goretex hiking shoes and I should have worn thicker socks with my trail shoes. My toes got cold enough to lose feeling and I didn't know they were a little wet where the snow melted on top of my shoes. As the day ended I got back across the creek on some frozen water and a snowy tree trunk. Earlier in the day I'd pulled a muscle or something on the left side of my back. Lying down and napping for a while helped that enough for me to feel good enough to go after the seeing the Inaugural Invocation on television.

Running (Trail) 43:17 [3] 5.1 mi (8:29 / mi)
slept:7.75 weight:175lbs

Greenway Trail, Riffleford Rd. to Rte. 118 and back. It was snowing lightly through out the run with about 1/4" on the ground. This section is fairly flat though it very often rises and falls a few feet. Part of it had been relocated to higher ground, behind and higher than a cliff, since I last ran it. The trail is on a small flood control dyke a lot of the time. The narrow dyke is so old that there are some very large trees right in the middle of it in a few places. The snow made these areas slippery enough to warrant caution where the trail dipped to go around. It was a fun run and reminicent of a run I did overlapping part of the same area that I did last year. That run was snowy too. I didn't feel very strong today. I was 21:49 at the turnaround so at least I got a negative return split. The only wildlife I saw were some ducks and a Great Blue Heron. I saw a father and son hiking and someone on the other side of the creek on the pipline ride. Other than that it was much solitude. I made the first footprints on the new snow.

Swimming (General) 10:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @3)

After my run, Peggy dropped Max off at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center so she could have a turn. Max and I played bunch on the slides and in the water with the snow visibly falling fast outside the windows. Relatively few people were there. Though in the pool for an hour, I actually treaded water and swam for much less time. I could feel my arms working.

Hiking (Trail) 20:00 [1] 0.76 km (26:19 / km) +33m 21:37 / km
slept:7.0 weight:176lbs

Meadowside Nature Center Area, Lake Bernard Frank, MD. As Peggy finished her run, Max and I went for a short hike. Though it was Sunday, the nature center was closed. Max and I looked at the caged (and injured?) raptors first. The bald eagle there was chirping like he was hungry as we approached. A falcon was eating a partly frozen mouse. Later on the trail we saw a free falcon flying through the tree tops. Max started out fast, hardly seeing the raptors. Spotting a man and his young, probably year-and-a-half old son on the trail, he wanted to pass as if we were in an orienteering race. We did. Spotting ice on the water below us, Max selected a trail that descended and we stopped for a while at the water edge. Max wouldn't stop for long because he was worried the other father son pair would pass us. We finished just about the time that Peggy finishe her run. When asked later during lunch, Max didn't recall seeing the bald eagle. Still later when watching the inaugural concert on television with Peggy in a part where they showed an eagle (and his caretaker) on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he blurted out having seen an eagle on the hike.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (55:00 / mi)

Lake Bernard Frank, MD. From the Smith Environmental Education Center I first did re-checking of some areas covered on my last excursion. Most of what I had drafted earlier was good but I added some to it too. I saw a red fox (2nd day in a row). Crossing over North Branch creek at Muncaster Mill Rd. going south, I covered areas on the east side of the creek to the eastern border of the park. This area is rather thin but it had plenty of features (a smallish quarry, various boulders and cliffs, a derelict pickup truck probably from the 1940 era, and ditches, some fields. Some buildings in the fields seen in recent aerials and in county base maps were just about completely gone. The vegetation of areas covered today was generally more open and easier to map than my last outing. I got a late start so I didn't cover as much as I'd have liked to have done. It was getting dark near the end. I had to cross the ice laden creek in a shallow area. Though both feet had been in the water only one got wet. The air was in the 30's F with no winds.

Running (Off Trail) 55:23 [3] 4.66 mi (11:53 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:175lbs

Cabin John Regional Park. Starting from the playground parking off Tuckerman La, I ran counter-clockwise northward. The winter visibility was pretty good for most of the way. I found some features such as pits and small boulders which I hadn't seen before. There was one 12-15ft. deep uncrossable gully in the far north. Above that the terrain wasn't very nice but a few derelict objects were there. I hit a sewer line clearing and went as far as the park limit at Greenleaf Rd. before looping back. The west side of the stream in the far north was mostly not good. However the further south I got, where the park widens, things were better. I found a few trails which I hadn't been on before. One is in the process of being created either officially or unofficially. It was flagged on the western ridge with wire orange construction markers which are often used at O-meets too. It could have been a mountain biker trail or a planned relocation of the Cabin John Trail. The woods were nicest just before getting back to Tuckerman La. It was in the low 20s F. I hadn't been running much lately so this felt good.

Note
slept:4.5 weight:175.5lbs

I took a walk at lunch across The Mall in Washington D.C. and through Freedom Plaza. It was cold and windy like much of the rest of the east coast--about 16F with winds 15-28mph. I walked fast as I often do but was a bit surprised to see at least one other person going nearly the same pace. That doesn't happen much except for when walking New York City streets. I guess the cold gets a lot of people going faster. The walk was 1.6 miles by the time I was back; a very common distance for me to walk at lunch so it's not worth logging as a hike.

I wanted to see the preparations for the Inaugural celebrations since I'm not planning on fighting the crowds. There were walls of toilets along portions of The Mall. These can't help but become obstacles and funnels for the visitors. Sometimes they were arranged as 3 sided canyons or forts. Police were buzzing about. On the Mall also, there were audio and Jumbotron towers being erected. I didn't see many tents put up yet though I saw one on top of the Willard, a 5-star hotel near the White House on Pennsylvania Ave., the parade route Several bleachers were setup on Pennsylvania Ave. too. One viewing stand setup in front of what once was the Washington D.C. Government Excutive Building at Freedom Plaza was tented over with canvas and an integrated clear plastic window. They also had paper and digital banners promoting statehood including a digital display that continuously counted the tax dollars raised in the district. The street poles were dressed-up but they often look as good at other times of the year when it's warmer. Moderate numbers of tourists were taking it all in. I bet there will be a lot more interesting people to see on Tuesday.

The inaugural celebrations might be fun to attend but I'm not yet convinced they will overtake the nations passion for watching football or going orienteering.

Bicycling (Stationary) 30:00 [3]
slept:4.0 weight:176lbs

I watched movies and spun.

Bicycling (Stationary) 30:00 [3]
slept:4.75

I sat on my bike while watching an old movie. I started around midnight and felt surprisingly good. I'm just starting to get old enough now that movies I'd seen at about the time when they first came out can qualify. My cadence battery died but one measure of cadence from my watch had me going in a good gear at 65rpm.

I should have been tired but was a bit riled after reading the degeneration of the AP discussion on the upcoming A-meet that QOC is putting on. Since I was deep into the last QOC A-meet in 2007, I was essentially given a bye and have had nothing to do with the organization of the event or other volunteer work for Ran it Granite. I found portions of the discussion appalling--designed to hurt/shock without any real benefit of unkowns or doubt. The statements made were careless judgements. There were some thoughtful and well written points as well. The ones I didn't like were plain hurtful to the club and volunteers of the event who I know work every bit as hard as the critics when it comes to volunteering and forwarding the sport. To me it was as if people were bullying and accusing QOC of intentional wrong doing based on very limited and even temporary information. I suppose this activity is why I mostly stay away from the AP Discussion pages. They are often unmotivating and there are better ways to address issues.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:4.5

45 situps. I'd stayed up late the night before doing some drafting and then early this morning, Max jumped in bed with me when Peggy was getting ready for work. Though Max got to sleep eventually, his tossing and head wagging kept me up. At home a bit late from work, the evening slipped away from me. I was too full from dinner to run and by the time I thought about riding my trainer it was too late and I felt like sleeping.

Bicycling (Commute) 13:43 [3] 2.76 mi (4:58 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:175.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to Maple Ave. with Max in his trailer, then to the Bethesda Metro Station via the Georgetown Branch tunnel. It was a bit colder but with calm winds. My timing at intersections went well. Over the weekend I had fixed my flat tire and replaced my handlebar tape.

Bicycling (Commute) 12:54 intensity: (10:24 @3) + (2:30 @4) 2.5 mi (5:10 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro station to Maple Ave., then to Northfield Rd. via the Georgetown Branch Trail. I hadn't been outside since the morning and it was colder than it's been lately. I like the fact that I felt warmer on the ride home than I did in my office. I jumped out to a quick start again hitting some traffic lights just right while going to Max's daycare to pickup the trailer. I pushed a bit to keep pace with the cars going over a hill in the dark on the busy 3 lane Maple Ave., and I even passed a few. I took it easier for most of the way home with the trailer in tow but I was winded a bit here and there; not used to sucking in the cold air.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 3:27:06 [1] 3.5 mi (59:10 / mi)
slept:7.5 weight:176lbs

Lake Bernard Frank, MD. I parked at the Smith Environmental Eduction Center (SEEC) and covered the area east of Meadowside Ln, north of the Lake Shore Trail, south of Muncaster Mill Rd., and west of North Branch. This was a somewhat difficult area to map. It wasn't as feature rich as the areas which I'd recently covered, even though it still had plenty. What made it difficult to map was the changing vegetation. There was everything from thick green to rough open in small plots. I could map just about all of it all as light green but I captured more detail. The many small rough open clearings required some some judgement. Though they show-up well on photographs and are fairly obvious in the field, the edges were sometimes not as clear due to some thorns and/or overhanging branches. Also requiring judgement were some ruins close together. Two had been built into the hillside with a stone wall forming a cliff. One had a depression in between walls.

I've now covered all of the Lake Frank terrain below Muncaster Mill Rd. and west of North Branch. The east side vegetation may get mapped more generally though there still appears to be many rock and clearing features there. A rough guess is that it'll take 5-6 more outings to cover the east side of North Branch and the lake down to about the dam area which I've already mapped.

Swimming (General) 50:00 [1]

After field checking I went to the Germantown Acquatic Center. Peggy dropped off Max with me and then she went for a run on the Greenway Trail. I was squatted in the shallows with Max much of the time and helped him get up to the slides a lot. I'd catch him at the bottom of the slides, then do it all again over and over. I was a bit dehydrated from being out field checking a long time earlier so the squatting spurred some pre-cramp twitches.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 3:43:12 [3] 2.5 mi (1:29:17 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:173.5lbs (sick)

Lake Bernard Frank, MD. With my last day of use-or-lose leave, I had the day off again. One again I went to do more field checking. It was a bit colder but not so windy this time. Unless I've missed something in my notes, I finished-off the Smith Education Center areas. There was lots of detail with many manmade objects and buildings. I found a few thorns too but most of the area was nice. In one area there were two strange lines of debris made from trees--sawed-up trunks stacked 2-3 ft high, 5-8 ft wide and 10's of meters long. I'm not sure how to map them since they are manmade. Eventually they'll become dot knolls or small earth walls but I think I'm going to say they are a fence for now.

Note
(sick)

My knee was aching this morning until I was able to pop it. It's good most days but I haven't been testing it running on roads much. Since the condition is not likely to get a lot better, I'm going to say I'm "healed" for now.

Though my running miles were amongst the lowest that I can remember for a whole year, it was expected with lots of time out due to a torn meniscus and surgery. I made up for it with cycling more miles than any year since perhaps 2001 or before. My weight jumped up to the highest ever over the summer but was back down to historic levels by the year end. I look forward to better training and competition results in 2009.
