Other (Snow Shoveling) 20:00 [2]
slept:7.0 weight:170.5lbs

After a mixed weather night and a colder morning, I needed to clear the driveway and walkway for expected guests. There was a lot of scraping of frozen slush.

Note

Here are some of my totals for 2009. It was a better year all around than in 2008 when I was injured much of the time.

I biked nearly as much as in 2008 while not counting miles for any indoor trainer sessions (there were a lot in the early part of the year and many misssed days due to rains & cold). Almost all of my miles were for commuting. I miss riding lighter and long for fun on open roads.

I orienteered nearly the same hours as in 2008 but much less of 2009 was invlolved with field checking. I also covered more miles. Overall my ranking results got better but my improved speed also led to more sloppiness in many races. My overall accuracy (76%) dropped which meant I didn't meet a goal that I'd set for the year. Bright spots were the US Champs and the Hudson Highlander. I hope to reign-in the sloppiness in 2010, continue to bring my running back up to par (if I can devote the time), and try a full rogaine again.

My running was sporadic but I gained a lot of confidence and met a late year mileage goal which was much more than in 2008. The running miles helped a lot but came with the opportunity cost of missing cycling days. That was a good trade-off and I gained confidence in being able to handle more running volume. I still have to watch out for stress on my left knee and sometimes on my right knee. I hope to put-in more time running in 2010 and keep my weight lower.

Running (Street & Trail) 16:34 [3] 2.2 mi (7:32 / mi)
slept:4.0 weight:172.5lbs

From Northfield Rd., I ran up to Custer Rd., Huntington Pkwy., to Maple Ridge Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Glenbrook Rd. to Exeter Ln. to to Wilson Ln. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I was kind of tired but got out around 11pm so that I could mail a letter. My legs felt sluggish.

Running (Street & Trail) 31:44 intensity: (26:44 @3) + (5:00 @4) 4.3 mi (7:23 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:172.5lbs

Washington, D.C. From 14th & Independence Ave. SW, to Memorial Bridge via 17th St. and the Reflecting Pool, to the Mt. Vernon Trail, to the 14th St. Bridge, to Ohio Dr. to Main Ave. to Maryland Ave. via the Portals complex, to 12th St. to D St. to 13th St. to C St. I did a version of what I call the Memorial Tour . It was around 31F but with 22mph winds that were reported to be gusting to 36mph. The water in the Reflecting Pool was frozen most of the way across. I felt tired and awkward at not having run much lately but despite the wind, I was at about 7:14 at the first mile (Lincoln Memorial). The first 1.5 miles were into the wind. Turning with the wind at my back after the Memorial Bridge was nice and I eventually caught another guy who I had sighted a long way off. The winds hit me from the side a lot on the 14th St. Bridge. I was slower coming up the stairs to the Portals complex. My new Nike microfiber sweatpants worked well--light and easy to run in like my old 1980's style nylon wind pants that went swish-swoosh and apparantly can't be bought any more.

Note

With the run today, I cleared 500 miles of running (not including my orienteereing miles) for the year. It was much more than last year but behind my totals in 2007 and 2006. I did however cycle more miles in 2009 than in 2007 and 2006 while being just a bit behind my total for 2008.

Swimming (General) 1:20:00 [1]
slept:6.0

Bloomington, MN. While Peggy visited old friends from her high school days, Max and I got into the hotel swiminig pool again. Initially, we had the pool to ourselves. The water was warm and Max tried again to make himself swim. He was more open to taking tips and getting some help but still flailed-around in a dog-paddle type motion a lot. Eventually, after keeping at it a long while, he got more consistent in making forward motion. I would swim away a bit but didn't get too far least he got himself into water over his nose--I could get to him quickly but I also didn't want him to have a bad experience that would quell his desire. The pool started getting other visitors and before long there were around 30 people in and outside of the water. Max observed one boy just older than him jumping in from the edge so he tried it with me there to catch his arms and steady him. He liked it a lot so he did that over and over and over. He surprised me when he soon got his shorts filled with a little air and decided to float on his back as I'd been trying to get him to do earlier. He did this a few more times and his confidence increased.

Running (Treadmill) 14:18 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (4:18 @4)
slept:8.5

Bloominton, MN. With just a little time before Peggy's brother Paul took me to a Minnesota Wild hockey game, I got it a brief run in our hotel. According to the distance gauge I covered 2 miles. I ramped up somewhat slowly but the last mile was at under a 7 minute pace if the treadmill can be trusted. The Wild beat St. Louis but the game was close to the end.

Event: Joyful 5K

Running (Street & Trail) 24:20 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (16:20 @2) + (5:00 @3) 1.53 mi (15:54 / mi)
slept:6.5

Joyful Christmas Day Run, Como Lake, St. Paul, MN. We had hoped that Peggy's brother Paul would make it to the race but he had a lot to do. Since Peggy took Max around the lake last year and I ran the 10K in the Bethesda Turkey Chase, it was my turn to watch after him while Peggy ran. Max remembered the cold from last year when it was in the single digits and didn't want to run this year. It was much warmer, just around 30 F. We started with the group getting there with just enough time this year. I got Max going by by playing along in a snowball fight chase but that didn't interest him for long. We walked a bit and he felt discouraged. I was surprised that he took-up my offer to carry him on my shoulders. We started passing other walkers quickly. For a little while, he started letting out sequential screams of pain and it took me a while to figure out that big but somewhat icy snowflakes were hitting his face. Getting around a corner in the lake helped with the wind alignment but after a while he wanted down again for a little while. Others passed us again he got up on my shoulders again. Eventually Max said he felt like such a loser--big emotions about a race from one so young. I started shuffling along on the snowy trail passing others much more quickly and that abated him for the last half mile to the end. I was happy to get in some kind of workout and the shuffling along with +40 pounds on my shoulders did get me up to a slight sweat. Christmas celebrations in our hotel and later with Peggy's family ensued afterward.

Swimming (General) 20:00 [1]

Splashing about in a pool in Bloomington, MN with Max. Max was desperately trying to swim but didn't want to get any help or coaching. I was glad to just get in some kind of workout. It was snowing heartily outside. With the snow at home and too much holiday business, I just hadn't had the time or the will the last few days.

Other (Snow Shoveling) 1:15:00 [2]
slept:7.0 weight:170lbs (sick)

With 6-8 inches on the ground and on our cars, Peggy, Max and I got out to clean things off. Max quickly was distracted with the kid across the street and did some sleding. The snow kept falling down and piling-up so once done, it was enough to make us wonder about whether widening the driveway recently for two cars, was worth it. At least it was nice to be outside to enjoy the snow.

Other (Snow Shoveling) 1:10:00 [2]

After accompanying Max on some sledding runs, I came back and had another round of shoveling. It kept on coming down and by the time I had made the circuit, 15" had fallen, almost another inch on top of what I'd just cleaned up. I got some more of that too. I didn't realize how worn out I was until I got inside.

Bicycling (Commute) 26:07 [3] 4.51 mi (5:47 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:170lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd. to Montgomery Ave. with an empty trailer, then after picking up Max, I rode back through Bethesda with a stop for dinner.

I had been off work this day and intended to go field checking while I still could before the snows arrived. I had planned to bicycle to Rock Creek for this but by the time I got out it was too late. I spent most of the day in traffic, a long time at the bank, an doing some other errands--it was not much of a day off. The traffic on Rockville Pike was so frustrating coming back that despite the cold, I got things organized enough to pickup Max on bicycle. It's a much better way to get around when driving is bad, and most of the time when it's not. Max stayed pretty warm and I enjoyed the cool air while in my warm cycling clothes. My neighbor remarked that riding in the winter included me in the faternity.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 26:35 [2] 2.95 mi (9:01 / mi)
(sick)

From Northfield Rd. Custer Rd. to Park Ln., to Batter Rd. to Wilson Blvd. to Old Georgetown Rd. to Woodmont Ave. to Edgemoore Ln. to Arlington Rd. to Elm St. to Exeter Rd. to Battery Ln. to Park Ln. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. With friends expected for tomorrow evening (despite the snow), I realized that I'd forgotten several ingredients for dinner (this despite and earlier trip). Max was late to bed again so it took a while for me to get ready after digesting. I ran to the local Safeway. It was snowing (only about an inch on the ground at this time) and quite pleasant to run in. Arriving 3 minutes to 11pm, I and several others found Safeway closed. I didn't waste much time and took Peggy's advice to checkout Giant. It was further and I feared it to be closed but I was happy to find it open--it was busy too. The shelves were more bare than usual. I had to go to organics just to find frozen spinach. I decided to be sure to have enough supplies and ended up carrying back 2 quarts of pasta sauce, salad dressing, semi-sweet chocolate chips for Peggy, dinner rolls, various cheeses, and more. It was heavier than I'd usually consider running with but it worked out okay. For the 1.57 miles starting out, I was about 12:54. Loaded up, I felt more awake and ready to go. It took me 13:40 on the slightly uphill 1.38 mile run home in deeper snow.

Running (Street & Trail) 47:21 [3] 6.25 mi (7:35 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:172lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., through Grenwhich Park to Old Georgetown Pike, to W. Cedar La. to the Elmhirst Trail, to Cedar La. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Beach Dr. to Grosvenor La. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail, to Old Georgetown Rd. to the Huntington Pkwy. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. With a stressful day at work the day before, I felt worse and didn't run. Instead, I ate cookies for the second day in a row and fell asleep. I felt much better today though I didn't get out until around 11:30pm. On the run, I felt winded early and took it steady through most of the run. It was around 30 F but mostly calm winds. There were a few places on Old Georgetown Rd. where the sidewalk was closed.

Running (Street & Trail) 28:48 intensity: (21:48 @3) + (7:00 @4) 4.05 mi (7:07 / mi)
slept:5.75 weight:169lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. to to Singleton Dr. to Bulls Run Pkwy., to the trail along the school to Bradmore Dr. to Folkstone Rd. to Hartsdale Ave. to Heampstead Ave. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. I headed out before 11:30pm and felt winded fairly soon. However I was around 7:00 at the first mile and I worked a little to keep up the pace. Toward the end, I was slowing and not feeling so good. It was probably my congested lungs catching-up.

slept:4.0 weight:171.5lbs (sick)

Washington D.C. From 12th & Independence Ave., SW, over the 14th St. Bridge into Virginia, then on the Mt. Vernon Trail to Key Bridge, then on the C&O Canal Towpath through Georgetown to the Rock Creek Trail, then to Connecticut Ave. and the Woodley Park Metro Station. I was planning a run from Silver Spring but given the time that I was leaving work, I figured it best to save time on the commuting by running toward home. I hadn't run much over 4 miles for a while and wasn't sure how I'd feel on this. It turned out that I felt the best that I had in a long while. I work nice socks and that usually helps me feel good. I tried to keep from pushing too hard. On the Rock Creek Trail I eased my way past one guy going near my pace only to get passed myself just a few steps later. I kept the other guy in sight until reaching Woodley Park and seemed to gain on him whenever the trail was extra dark or the pavement more rough. As often happens when I run to Woodley Park, I probably frightened commuters on the train with my sweating and this time a hacking fit. It's funny how I can make it through most of a run without coughing only to have a drip make me do so excessively after a run.

Running (Street & Trail) 36:09 [3] 4.93 mi (7:20 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:169.5lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd. to Custer Rd. to Wilson Blvd. to Glenbrook Rd. to Bradley Blvd. to Kennedy Dr. to Dorset Ave. to the Capital Crescent Trail to the Little Falls Trail at Hillandale Rd. through Norwood Recreational Area, to Wisconsin Ave. to Old Georgetown Rd. to the Huntington Pkwy. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I kept busy throughout the day and didn't get out running until after 11pm. At least I got something in before the expected rains tomorrow. It was a warmer night but I had on the same amount of clothes. I felt tired returning, a little sore in the quadricepts, and a bit overdressed. Returning home I got to see our own holiday lights that I'd put on the house earlier in the day with a little bit of Max's help. I still hacked-up a fit of coughs after this run.

Running (Street & Trail) 33:59 [3] 4.48 mi (7:35 / mi)

From Northfield Rd. to Custer Rd. to Huntington Pkwy. to Old Georgetown Rd. to Maple Ridge Rd. to the Bethesda Trolley Trail. to Battery Ln./Rosedale Ave. to Kentbury Dr. to the Georgetown Branch Trail, to Elm St. to Wisconsin Ave. to Elm St. to Exeter Rd. to Park Ln. to Custer Rd. to Northfield Rd. I got out latish again. The heat had gone out in our house again so I was trying to figure out what had happened for much of the evening. With it cold inside (low 60's F), it made it easier when I got outside; (below freezing) but a breeze made it more crisp. Things were quiet just about everywhere I went. It was nice to pass our old house on Rosedale. Some of the other houses there have been rennovated; others just had their holiday lights put up. The tunnel was locked as I passed around it and I got him just before 11pm.

From Northfield Rd., Custer Rd. to Wilson Ln., to Maiden Ln. to Whittier Blvd. to Woodhaven Blvd. to Bradley Blvd. to Valley Rd. to Ridge Rd. to McKinley St. to Garfield St. to Roosevelt St. to Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. I'm still feeling a bit of a cold/cough. After digesting a bit, I got out running at around 10:30pm. It was just under 30F and a steady breeze was blowing. I'd been thinking about doing this route again for a while and haven't done it since September. I took it easy but felt better than the day before. This route has one large hill.

Running (Street & Trail) 30:40 [3] 4.05 mi (7:34 / mi)
slept:4.0 weight:170lbs (sick)

From Northfield Rd., Greenwich Park, to Old Georgetown Rd. to Beech Dr. to to Singleton Dr. to Bulls Run Pkwy., to the trail along the school to Bradmore Dr. to Folkstone Rd. to Hartsdale Ave. to Heampstead Ave. to McKinley St. to Garfield St., to Roosevelt St., to the trail at Jefferson St. to Northfield Rd. I couldn't let yet another day go by without running. I've had trouble adjusting since getting back from California-lots of excuses perhaps. It was a travel day on Monday, and pretty busy at work on Tuesday and Wednesday. I picked-up a bit of a cold just before leaving California and I've been staying up too late (on west coast time) getting some things done. That and the recent cold rains sapped the little energy that I have. With Peggy on a new temporary work schedule, the evenings have involved making dinner and getting Max ready for bed. I got out to run well after midnight; further delayed by having to put the trash out. I felt better than expected at first though there was some initial discomfort from the yucca thorn that's embedded deep in my still swollen left shin. After the first mile taken easily at about 7:25, instead of feeling better, I felt worse and plodded through the rest. My left knee was giving me the usual aches and pains associated with changes to colder weather but my congested lungs weren't sucking enough in. I felt really sapped and awful by the time I dragged myself the last 2 miles home. I thought I'd be much slower than I was. After I got into bed I probably kept Peggy awake with my hacking/coughing and later had a nasty painful cramp in my right calf; the cramp was still smarting me the next day.

Orienteering race (Foot) 48:46 [4] ***** 3.4 km (14:21 / km) +173m 11:26 / km
spiked:8/16c slept:7.25

LAOC: Vasquez Rocks Variety Pack; Middle. I started out badly and didn't get much better until the course got easier. Tapio Karas again started a few minutes ahead of me but I never saw him this time. I had a hard time adjusting to the 1:10,000 scale in this very technical area. I didn't trust my first inclination at #1 and lost a few minutes there. #2 was very close to an unmapped and out-of-bounds areas which I strayed into before relocating. I got #3, #4, and #5 pretty well but had a small error at #6 and larger ones at #7 and #8. I hit #9 pretty well but being unconfident, I ran low going to #10. I could see that one from a trail but had to convince myself to check it out. With cliffs in the way, I had to do a big zig-zag to get there. I could see the set of rocks that the next control would be in from #10 but I ran up the wrong slot and lost more time. Karl Alswede just about caught me there. As I ran out, I found myself chasing Greg Walker on the Blue course to my #12. I gained on him and separated a bit more from Karl but misjudging the distance, I ran wide right to #13. By the time I came back, I was punching just in front of Karl again. I hit the next few pretty well and even got to the second to last control before Greg. However as I ran out toward the Go control, I missed the easier trail route to the right. I climbed left to avoid the pointy yuccas in a reentrant and found myself way too far left, behind Greg by about 30m or so. I never caught him. I was winded from sprinting but not very tired from the race. My errors put me far behind what other Red course runners (Ted Good and Tapio Karas were around 12 minutes ahead) did though I wasn't last. I still enjoyed the challenge here and can at least take back some of the sting of my first try at navigating this area in 2001 when I was essentially still a novice. It's been a nice vacation too but it's just about over.

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 8:00 [2] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

LAOC: Vasquez Rocks Variety Pack; I warmed-up from the parking area to the start, and also did some back and forth jogging too.

Orienteering (Trail-O) 15:00 [0]
slept:7.25

LAOC: Vasquez Rocks State Park, CA. US Trail-O Champs. For my introduction to Trail-O, I did two regular controls and a timed control for the model. I'd forgotten that no None of the choices was a possibility so I got the first one wrong. I got the second one right fairly quickly mostly by knowing exactly where I stood when looking at the choices. I got the timed control right in 22 seconds. This was a good learning experience, but not the way to get ready for a US Championship.

Orienteering race (Trail-O) 1:14:00 [1] *** 1.7 km (43:32 / km) +30m 40:00 / km
spiked:6/15c

LAOC: Vasquez Rocks State Park, CA. U.S. Trail-O Championships. I started-off well on this nuanced micro-o sport. Experience certainly in the middle and end would have helped such as knowing whether a cliff stopped at 1 meter height or continued on as the rock gradually reached ground level. Things like understanding that trail-O (at least in this park) counted tree canopy rather than ground level trunks would have helped too. On two controls, I lost points for not knowing how flags that had fallen over would be treated--on one of these, the whole control was thrown out but on the second, where only one flag on bare rock had been down before I was there, the control was counted. I reasoned that both should have been thrown out since after a flag had fallen, one could not how far it fell down slope and changed the order of the unmarked flags. These kind of things weren't worth protesting for me. Joe Brautigam got all the controls right. I rushed the last control which was timed and didn't pick-up on the difference in rough open and scattered open to miss that one. The experience of a Trail-O competition was somewhat fun but I'd rather stick to regular foot-o for now.

Running warm up/down (Trail) 6:00 [2] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)

Vasquez Rocks State Park, CA. I warmed-up by running up the road from the parking area to an upper lot and back. Without trying, along the way, I saw at least one of the controls that I later found out to be on my course.

Orienteering race (Foot) 23:13 [4] **** 3.0 km (7:44 / km) +73m 6:54 / km
spiked:11/15c

LAOC: Vasquez Rocks Variety Pack; Sprint. Following about a minute behind Tapio Karas, I started fairly well and saw him exiting the first control. I was feeling out of breath climbing up to #4 but still running pretty accurately. I almost caught Karas at #5 and managed to pass him at #6. Going to #7, I had a parallel error. I misread a trail for the road (both were mapped with similar symbols that were perhaps too close in size to be differentiated on the run). There were also similar blob rocks making the illusion more complete. Fortunately I recognized this and only had a short leg goint to #7 from #8. Tapio was on my tail going to #9 but I misread the first of two breaks in parallel cliffs and paused in confusion to give him the lead back. I thought I thought I got ahead going to #10 by taking a different way around a large long cliff but saw Tapio again in front of me at #11. I exited #11 probably being on an incorrect bearing. Realizing it as I got near the parking lot, I corrected by overshot the cliff that I was looking for; I found another similar cliff with another control and double-checked the control # twice before searching another minute. I ran well to #13 but went a bit wide to the left on #14. I corrected fairly well to that. The Go control #15 was easy and my 13 second push at the end, 4 seconds faster than Tapio, gave me a shallow 1 second overall lead on him and second place in M45+. It was a fun race with all the lead changing going on but I had an advantage following Karas out of the start that probably more than made up for my 1 second victory. Without really analyzing it at the time of this log entry, I suppose I had over 2:30 minutes of error--this is why I often don't do well in sprints.

Anaheim, CA. From S. Harbor Blvd., to to W. Ball Rd. to Disneyland Dr./S. West St., to W. Katella Ave. to Harbor Blvd. After Peggy returned from her southward run with nothing much interesting to report, I started to reverse the northward run that I did yesterday. On the way out, I had to weave through various pilgrim groups on the sidewalk. On the return I took a turn a bit early by mistake but with it being lined by some nice shady palm trees, I kept on it as it bordered the Disneyland and California Adventure Parks. I felt better during the run but didn't think that I was running faster than the previous day. I avoided looking at my watch in the last mile. I cut right thinking I was going to my hotel but did so at one hotel too early. I perhaps could have kicked-in and probably would have if I knew I'd only be 4 seconds off being under 30 minutes. Later on in the day, Peggy, Max and I walked through and did lots of rides in California Adventure Park.

Anaheim, CA. From S. Harbor Blvd., to Orangwood Ave. to S. West St., to W. Ball Rd. to Harbor Blvd. From our hotel, I followed the route around Disneyland that Peggy ran before me. It had been rather busy the last few days and I never have gotten very used to running in the morning. I felt sort of lumbering and slow. I thought I was going slower than I was on this fairly flat course. There were only a few hills at intersection over and underpasses. After the run, Max had indicated not wanting to go to Disneyland because he'd rather watch TV. He was also a little afraid of meeting a full sized Mickey Mouse. Later, he was willing to admit that he was wrong which so far in his life, is a rarity. We walked most of the 11 hours that we were in the park but only got to within 50ft. of Mickey.

Hiking (Street & Trail) 20:00 [1]
slept:1.5 weight:172lbs

Venice Beach, CA. After flying most of the day of Max's official birthday, we spent more time in rush hour traffic driving to get to the Pacific Ocean. Max enjoyed a playground in the dark and we later walked the west coast equivalent of a board walk (concrete). With Venice being known as a major capital of well-to-do self-absorbtion, it was a little bit of a surprise to arrive with the smell of ganga in the air and see most of the open stores selling mostly water pipes. At least we did get to see a pretty sunset.
