Bicycling (Rollers) 30:09 [3]
weight:179.5lbs

Spinning and watching a movie. My legs are still feeling tired so I lumbered through this. It was a little slower than I've been spinning recently.

Running (Street & Trail Commute) 20:56 [3] 2.76 mi (7:35 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:181lbs

From the Friendship Heights Metro Station at Western Ave., Friendship Rd. to Willard Ave. to the Little Falls Trail, to River Rd. to the Capital Crescent Trail, to Bethesda Ave. to Woodmont Ave. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I still felt a bit tired while running. It was in the upper 40's F and breezy. Jon Pifer passed me on his commute home, just after I'd crossed Falls Rd. on the Capital Crescent Trail. I shouldn't have eaten a late snack last night.

Bicycling (Commute) 18:15 [3] 4.27 mi (4:16 / mi)
slept:6.5 weight:179.5lbs

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station, back to Northfield Rd., the back to the Bethesda Metro Station. Getting Max awake slowly and doaing a little practicing for his first class presentation, I found that I was running a little behind. I put on one jacket to get Max onto his bus for school and then changed it before setting out to ride. I didn't realize that I'd left my wallet in the first jacket until I'd gotten into the station at the bottom of the long escalator. At least the two legs going to the station were with tailwinds. It was in the low 30's F and the air felt good going to the station. I was a little more tired going the other direction.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:58 [3] 1.41 mi (4:14 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station, to Northfield Rd. There was a good headwind but I concentrated on spinning. My legs felt a bit tired.

Orienteering warm up/down (Foot) 23:32 [2] * 2.0 km (11:46 / km)
spiked:11/11c slept:8.0 weight:178.5lbs

QOC: Little Bennett Regional Park, MD. While Peggy ran her course, Max and I went out on the White course. Max had fun doing it as a night-O with Peggy last night, and again with other friends last night. He wanted to wait for other friends to do it again but he got tired of waiting and asked me to go with him. He was all set to do it by memory but I kept trying to slow him down to read the map. An older girl doing it by herself gave him some competition and this only motivated Max to run faster. I had to help Max orient the map. He still just wants to go off and run in the direction he thinks it is--despite a similar familial tendency from an unammed parent, I tried to teach him correctly. I let him make an error on the way to #10 and as we headed downhill in the wrong direction, he understood with one prompting that something was wrong. Max finished faster than he had the night before and pushed toward the finish to keep ahead of the girl who caught us once. I ran in my winter coat and got a bit too warm. I kept wondering with my legs feeling so dead from yesterday how I'd do the Blue course later.
12 PM

Orienteering (Foot) 1:13:00 [4] *** 9.4 km (7:46 / km) +320m 6:38 / km
spiked:22/23c

QOC: Little Bennett Regional Park, MD. What a difference a night will make. I ran well today and there were a lot of reasons for it. First, the course was very similar to the night-o I did last night--16 of 23 controls were the same though I did approach a few of these from different directions. The course was fun but not very technical either. I got a good night sleep again though I woke-up a lot probably because of aches and pains from the day/night before. I also dreamt a lot. Partially, dehydrated, I also weighed-in significantly lower--this is partly psychological but there did seem to be a bit of spring in my step that I didn't expect. The daylight also let me see more of the terrain. It was enough for me to know how I could go around thick vegetation. It also let me see the larger features that were further off, thus keeping me on my line better while navigating a leg. I also got an extra push from Peggy who wanted to get back to see KU play VCU in the NCAA Basketball Tournament (they ultimately lost by having a poor shooting day as a team while VCU played rather well too). Peggy was already disgruntled that I hadn't left to start by the time she'd returned--I had just arraned for Jon Pifer to keep an eye on Max and finally finished getting ready when she came-in. The course today was somewhat flatter too and with the green terrain less of a problem, I found that I could open up my stride much of the time. My one error was overshooting #19 by being too low. I was looking in the trees for the hunter's stand on that. I was happy to avoid serious cramping. The first cramps started on leg #14 but I walked-up a steep hill on that and walked in a few other places. Errors I had made in the dark the night before didn't happen again in the day. For instance, on the last long leg to the Go control, though physically tired, I had no problem keeping a straight line and finding the control uphill through some slash. I had incorrectly thought there might have been a map seem in this area last night. More comments to come in the Split List. I'm glad my left knee held-up good; it's much better on soft ground.

Orienteering (Field Checking) 3:40:00 intensity: (3:00:00 @1) + (40:00 @2) 5.0 mi (44:00 / mi)
slept:8.0 (injured)

Cabin John Regional Park, MD. For my first venture at actual field checking, beyond capturing trails with a GPS, I covered the stream valley just north of Tuckerman Rd. and a little bit beyond. I knew this area to be somewhat detailed so I wanted to make sure to hit it while the leaves are still off. Unlike the Lake Frank and Lake Needwood areas, I'm trying to stick to the larger features on this map. I still found more than I expected. I tracked out 3.52 miles of objects via GPS, most of this for vegetation and some trails in the campground area. I look forward to getting back sometime. It was cool, in the upper 30's F starting out but it warmed to the mid 40's F.
9 PM

Running warm up/down (Warm-up) 4:00 [2] 0.35 mi (11:26 / mi)

Little Bennett Regional Park, MD. I had just a little inadvertant warm-up going between the car, the Start, and some toilets. It let me get a feel for my latest headlamp mount. It would have been better to test this earlier but that's the way it goes; the indications on how well it was going to work on the warm-up were not good.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 1:29:17 [3] 6.8 km (13:08 / km) +230m 11:14 / km
ahr:142 max:161 spiked:12/21c

QOC: Little Bennett Regional Park, MD. It was a cooler than usual night for QOC Night-O but it felt fine when running. I made some errors but often time had trouble adjusting to what I saw on in the terrain vs. what I saw on the map. Some areas seemed greener than mapped though I know that they usually do when navigating at night. Other areas had contour detail that was missing or smoothed-over too much as sometimes happens when generating them from LiDAR data. On the second to last control, I was confused leaving the 3rd to last control when I kept climbing much more than I thought I should. I cut a little left and soon after started going down more but it seems like I ended up much lower than I thought was. I wonder if this was a map seam problem where the newer portions of the map were joined to the rest. Maybe it was just me being tired.

My lighting was bright and held out fine despite my being worried about it after I passed 75 minutes. I used the medium setting. However the problem I had with lighting was with the new headband that I'd just gotten. It attaches my Nigh Rider MiNewt that I usually use for cycling. The setup with the headband keeps the light pointed too low so I had to lean my head back to look far ahead, especially when going uphill. It also didn't stay on my head well. It was constantly sliding upward; quickly headed to popping off. The hardest thing about it was the way the cable to the battery hung. It kept flopping in front of my left eye. I'd reach behind my back when running to pull it away but it kept moving and quickly would get in front of my eye again.

It still was fun going out. I hadn't done a night-o in a long while. The courses were pretty fun. I did keep making the wrong choice when selecting a way to go around deadfall or other green obstacles. Without much training lately, I had the intuition toward the end that my body was more tired than I conciously felt.

slept:6.0 weight:181.5lbs (injured)

Washington, D.C. From Independence Ave., SW to 17th St., down The Mall to Lincoln Circle, 23rd St. SW. to the Rock Creek Trail along Ohio Dr., around the Tidal Basin to 15th St., SW. to Independence Ave., SW. I didn't have to work late and felt it was time to try a short run. Much of this was on pavement but I felt okay. I can see that I'm not out of the woods yet. I was going a bit faster than I thought I was when I hit the first mile at about 7:15. I wanted to see the Cherry Blossoms which have really popped the last couple of days. It's already just a little bit before peaking. A few trees haven't really any flowers but others have them on most of the buds. None have started being blown off yet. After getting back to Bethesda, I made it to a bike shop and got a replacement spoke for my commuter bike. Max has been wanting to bike to school again.

Other (Tag) 15:00 [2]
slept:7.0 (injured)

Max insisted on playing tag with me while we were at the playground at the Haggerstown Outlet Mall (MD). Peggy got to shop while I ran in circles for 15 minutes, just ahead of Max. I felt slow but did actually run through just about the whole time to the point of feeling winded.

Earlier in day, we toured the Antietam Battlefield, hiking up and down the 60 steps of the observation tower, and making a small excursion to the Burnside Bridge. It was amazing how beautiful the area is now with all the intersting topography, rocky outcrops, and patchy fields; how scary and terrible it must have been 149 years ago.

Once home, I did some yard work felling some trashy trees in our very heavily tree covered back yard. For some reason my neck was sore in the evening.

Bicycling (Commute) 37:29 [4] 12.07 mi (3:06 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:180lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd., to 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. After getting Max to his bustop, I rode directly to work. Last night I had repaired the flat rear tire on my commuter bike only to discover a broken spoke on the front tire, when I was trying to true it. Not wanting to miss the opportunity that a 75F sunny day in March is, I used a backpack and rode on my road bike. It's much lighter and has a shorter wheel base. It was fun and I could very soon tell that I was moving faster than I do on my commuter bike. I worked at it since I hadn't ridden into work this fast in a long time however it wasn't as much effort as I've put in on various rides in previous years on my commuter bike. Most of the time I was doing around 21mph which is good for me at a time when I've not beendoing much in the way of training rides. I got through most of the traffic intersections pretty easily and certainly felt tired at the end. The awkward part of commuting on my road bike is having to walk through the courtyard and hallways in Speedplay cleats that were never design for it. Otherwise it was pretty fun. The temperature was 51F and there was just a slight headwind, mostly on Ohio Dr. along the Potomac River.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 41:23 [4] 11.81 mi (3:30 / mi)
(injured)

From 12th & C St. SW, Washington, D.C. to Northfield Rd., Bethesda, MD. Breaking out from work just before they locked me in, I got a good start rounding the Jefferson Memorial in nice warm sunny weather. Even though there was a significant headwind, I cut through it well getting to Georgetown. There was slightly above the usual amount of pedestrian and auto traffic there but I got onto the CCT fast and resumed some good speed. I felt in between needing to gear down and hold where I was at but I held the gear. On the flats I was doing around 19mph, still into the wind but to a lesser extent. My speed up the grade was around between 16 and 18mph; still faster than usual but not a lot. I did gear down further ahead and mostly felt significant winds by the time I passed Dalecarlia. I kept steady after that but was fairly tired reaching home.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:28 [3] 1.46 mi (4:26 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:180lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. It would have been nice to bicycle all the way to work today (it was only 42F and sunny) but I still haven't fixed a flat on my commuter bike. With my road bike I'm reluctant to beat it up on the bouncy paved trail and would have had to use a backpack instead of the panniers that I'm used to using. There was a lot of traffic from more than one trash truck bottleneck.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 8:38 [3] 1.88 mi (4:35 / mi)

From Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. via Bethsda Ave. I stopped-off to pickup some spare inner tubes needed for my commuter bike. It was around 60F. Riding in my work clothes was too warm so I took off my jacket.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:22 [3] 1.46 mi (4:22 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:181.5lbs (injured)

From Northfield Rd. to the Bethesda Metro Station. I was going to ride with Max but my commuter bike with the attachment for the trail-a-bike had gone flat. Max rode the bus and I rode my road bike. It was in the low 40s F. I felt fine. Last week, I was concerned enough about my knee not to ride--maybe it is better? It's probably too early to say.
6 PM

Bicycling (Commute) 5:46 [4] 1.48 mi (3:54 / mi)

From Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. It was a bit warmer out and I caught the first 2 traffic lights just right. I felt a bit winded but it's usually fun to ride my road bike and I was enjoying it this time. There was a bit of a headwind too.

Orienteering (Foot) 49:36 [4] 5.1 km (9:44 / km) +135m 8:35 / km
slept:6.5 weight:183lbs (injured)

QOC: Pohick Bay Regional Park, VA. I had no idea what to expect today. On the one hand, I thought I might be foolish to go out at all. Next with my decision to try the Green course, I wondered if I should be safer and just do Brown. The jogs to the bathroom before the start was encouraging as far as my knee goes though I still did feel some very minor discomfort in the area that was troubling me earlier this week. I took a little ibuprofen to keep the inflamation down. I left late and ran easy to the first control; hesitant even because of the map being out of date and just getting used to the scale. I could run so I was encouraged to run more naturally. Of course, I left #1 a bit fast and had a poor bearing. I mistook a reentrant juction higher up for the one that would lead me to the control. Figuring that out and correcting involved climbing over an extra ridge, then getting hung-up in some nasty deadfall. I hit the next several controls well though I had to stop once when my epunch, including a velcro safety strap, got stuck on a tree branch and came off as I ran forward (leg 4#). The course was not technically difficult; just physical. Pohick has a lot of tall steep reentrants. My route to #8, the long leg in common with Red, involved some misteps. I went left along the main road at the south edge of the park and cut in just past the park entrance. I meant to cut in much later. I ran over a trail after doing this, but without seeing it. I found myself hitting a maintenance road and seeing Keg Good, whom I'd seen earlier leaving what was my #7. Briefly on the road, then off at a non-descript point, I came down a long reentrant valley and attacked from low, SW of the control. I hit it okay but could have had a straighter line from my attack. I spike #9 and #10 too but felt the climb for these to be a bit unecessary. All in all, I was just happy to have been able to run (even slowly). I won the Green course (now my official age group) by 19 seconds. I worried about the pain happening more after the run but nothing like the swelling and pain I had on Thursday ocurred.

Running (Trail) 34:22 intensity: (15:00 @3) + (19:22 @4) 4.7 mi (7:19 / mi)
slept:5.5 weight:180lbs (injured)

College Park, MD. I was happy that the rains held-off. I ran from Cherry Hill Community Park, taking the Paint Branch Trail to the 2 mile mark, back until the unammed spur trail (across the marsh) to Rte. 1 at Hollywood Rd., back down to the Paint Branch Trail, and to Cherry Hill Community Park. I started off on the north side of Cherry Hill Rd. following the trail on a little north hook before going south, and felt okay. I've always tended to run the Paint Branch Trail faster than I've averaged elsewhere at roughly the same time. It's a nice and rather flat paved trail with long quiet sections and some quick curves mixed in too. I've measured it independently so I know the mile markers are reasonably accurate. The heavy tornado damage from around 2001 has gotten to look more normal--like other woods with deadfall, except for the marsh area. Available half-mile splits are: 3:36, 3:34, 3:32, 3:33, 3:38, 3:39 (cummulative of 2 segments with a much slower 0.8 miles in between), 3:36. I'd never run on the spur trail which was added over a year ago. It was longer than I thought it'd be at 0.4 miles to Rte. 1 and I slowed climbing out of the otherwise flat valley.

When I started the run, within the first minute I had felt some pain in my left knee. It was like it was just a little out of line and needed to be popped as I do almost daily since having my meniscus trimmed. That pain went away and I was enjoying running faster than I have been doing. It's somewhat intoxicating to go faster. I've had enough injuries in the last 10 years to know that I was going too fast. I didn't try to run hard either but it was just too fast for my own good without having done more base miles. Over the last couple of years, I've always felt that I just have to take advantage of going longer or faster when I can since my opportunities for decent running workouts are few. After the run, I tightened-up rather quickly and my knee really felt like it needed to be popped back in place. I couldn't do it so I just stretched. At home it stiffened up a lot more and I noticed some swelling underneath the knee. Later I needed to kneel on my knees giving Max a bath and I just couldn't put weight on my left one. I'll take it easier on the knee tomorrow and hope for the best. I took some Ibuprofen at Peggy's recommendation; a rare use of medication for me.

Running (Trail) 32:50 [3] 3.9 mi (8:25 / mi)
weight:182lbs

Greenbelt Park, MD. Working off-site allowed me to fit in a run after work. I meandered several trails and just a bit off-trail too; covering parts of the Azalea Trail, the Perimeter Trail, and the Blueberry Trail. I was slow on hills and still a little tired from racing on Sunday. I needed a bathroom too. The trails were nice though the woods were awfully thick looking. Despite recent rains, footing was good.

Running warm up/down (Terrain) 5:00 [2] 0.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Rosaryville State Park, MD. Warm-up on the grass for QOC's event just around the start/finish area. The rain had not been falling for most of this but it had been raining significantly before. It was probably in the upper 50's F so it wasn't bad.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:35:02 [4] 9.6 km (9:54 / km)
spiked:14/19c slept:8.25 weight:181lbs

QOC: Rosaryville State Park, MD. I ran in moderate rain most of the way. It didn't bother me much. I felt reasonably strong throughout race. I went out of the way and stopped for a toilet break between #2 and #3. With the first half of the race more greeen than white forest, I made many small errors. The worst error was probably a hypoxic moment when I read #11(?) as being on the wrong side of a reentrant.
3 PM

Orienteering (Control Pickup) 27:26 [2] ** 1.52 mi (18:03 / mi)
spiked:5/5c

Rosaryville State Park, MD. I picked-up a few controls not long after I'd finished my race. The rain had started coming down harder and I felt a bit cooler than I wanted to at times. The worst was trying to untie a very tight and wet knot to remove an epunch from a messy shrub.

slept:8.0 weight:180lbs

Lake Frank Park, MD. Covering east and western parts of the map I went over places which needed cleaning-up. Some of these were spots that I'd rushed over at the end of earlier field checking sessions and others were places where I it was hard to interpret field notes. I spent a fair amount of time removing root stocks (from the map) which were too small and aligning other point objects such as dot knolls. Due west of the south end of the lake I discovered a trail realignment so I mapped it. On the sides of the landfill, the grasses were all matted down; I was able to find several boulders that I probably would have missed if I were covering the areas in late spring when it will be tall again. I looked longingly over the plain of the top of the land fill. There was enough contour and widely scatterd tree cover there to make some potentially fun navigating. It was reminicent of Colorado terrain. Though some model airplane enthusiasts are given permission to fly over one area of it, there are a lot of methane collection pipes criss-crossing elsewhere that I doubt we'd be able to use the area for a long while. I felt tired much of the day and stumbled a lot over branches, rock, and pits that were hidden in lots of slippery leaves.

When I left work, the temperature was reported to be 61 F but it didn't feel like it at all; the wind made it feel much colder like it was in the 40s F. I had a scare early in the run when crossing a driveway and my left foot was angled up a bit driving forward--it felt like my calf was getting pulled where it hurt last week. I slowed for a while the soon forgot about it. I moved okay on the trail, even passing another runner while going into the wind. However, I felt tired much of the way. I carried a pouch of needed items and ran part of the way wearing my cycling jacket. The jacket is a bit heavy for running and I had to tie it around me half-way through.

Bicycling (Commute) 6:30 [3] 1.41 mi (4:37 / mi)

From the Bethesda Metro Station to Northfield Rd. I was glad I had brought my jacket for the ride home. My uncovered legs felt fine but I had enough of a sweat on me from the run that I probably would have gotten cold riding into the headwind.
