Running (Warm-up) 3:00 [3] 0.5 km (6:00 / km)

Warm-up for Day 2 of the US Championships on the Telmark West map near Cable, WI. I made it to the start with only a minute to spare before being on the clock.

Day 2 of the US Championships at Telemark Resort near Cable, WI. I again made some silly errors (9:20 to #2) but got better as I went. Going to #3 I seemed to have found an extra trail which lead me to making a slow run through the open forest while only half way there. Mostly, I did a better job visualizing the terrain from the map but sometimes broke form by running in from an attack point only on bearing (instead of reading my way in). This lead to errors on #4 and #9. I finished 7th in +M40 not so much from a good performance on my part as from troubles others had.

At the Telemark Ski Resort, WI. Jog to the start of the US Championships, then jogging near the start to keep warm in the snow flurries.

Day 1 of the US Championships at the Telemark Resort near Cable, WI. I made many sloppy errors (about 5 minutes worth at easy #2) though I also just had trouble reading the complex map too. There were times when I could not tell up from down without stopping and staring and I didn't do that enough. I failed to use the trails enough. See the Split List.

US Team Fundraiser Sprint at the Telemark Resort near Cable, WI. After the Day 1 competition, it took me a while to warm-up sitting inside but after getting a dry shirt I took off. Things were clicking pretty well though my wet feet still hurt. Someone started to catch-up causing me to rush too much and make a poor route choice to #8 and then again running out of #8 to #9. It was still very fun. See the Split List.

On the Telemark South map near Cable, WI: I ran the model course for the US Championships. Som routes were taken slow and via routes I might not normally go so that I could interpret the mapper's work. I also checked-out #5 on the way to #3. Though more detailed and with big depressions and many knolls, navigating the short legs and many trails was reminicent of navigating in Quantico terrain. I took my time and didn't have much trouble.

On the Telemark South map near Cable, WI. I continued some control picking with longer legs at the US Championships model event and found that I got off route a bit.

In Ft. Collins, CO. From Horsetooth Rd. to and around Warren Lake at night. I had a big dinner before hand and watching the Presidential debate didn't help my digestion. I felt nice once I got out.

In Medicine Bow, WY. I re-ran almost all of the 1000 Days course on the First with the Most Map and did control picking after that. I took time to make sure I was at the correct location at each control. I had trouble with #3 again but re-did it and got better after that. On legs that I did poorly on last summer, I tried different routes and was surprised at how much easier they were. The training helped me better visualize what I'd see along the way and what the control location would look like before I got there. I got better as I went. The practice also helped me be quicker to zero-in on the map the big features near the control then read my way in. It was cooling off and breezy. The altitude didn't seem to bother me much though I felt it going uphill and felt sore from the Highlanders still. The helpful-to-navigate-Aspens had mostly dropped their leafs carpeting the floor but were stilly pretty. The ones still up were brilliant.

In Medicine Bow, WY. I did some micro navigating on the First with the Most map to bolster my boulder reading. It helped me distinguish what was mapped and what wasn't. I also learned to be more flexible in what I was seeing and what was on the map. Nearby boulder configurations would appear correct but alignments with other boulders further away were not always as exact as I expected.

In Wheaton Regional Park, MD. Course setting for the QOC Meet on 10/24/2004. I streamered control locations on the east side and felt okay after yesterday. Weight 165.5.
