Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:35:00 [2] *** 5.35 km (28:58 / km)
30c slept:4.0 weight:168lbs

Broad Creek Park-Annapolis H.S. in Annapolis, MD. I setup controls with e-punches for the Summer Short Series Sprints. The controls were heavy and it was hot enough to get me dehydrated. It took longer than planned to get the e-punches ready so I was rushed putting controls out while meet volunteers waited. I also didn't have vetting tape when I was last scouting control locations earlier so I ended-up placing #2 on Sprint B a bit off--NE instead of NW of the thicket. #15 on Sprint B was a few meters left of the bend instead of right. The map wasn't necessarily designed for sprints and thus contributed to the placement errors which I hope for most were inconsequential--my apologies to those that it threw off. The event was well attended, the weather cooled off and we were able to walk across the street to a nice dinner after finishing.

Bicycling (Road) 2:03:52 [3] 38.4 mi (3:14 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:168lbs

From the Greenway Center in Greenbelt, MD. Good Luck Rd. to Lanham Severn Rd. to Rte 193, to Daisy La., to Hillmeade Rd. to Rte 450 to Church Rd. to Mt. Oak Rd. to Queen Anne Rd. to Rte. 214 to Patuxent River Rd. to Governor Bridge Rd. to Rte. 197. to Chapel Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Duckettown Rd. to Good Luck Rd. to the Greenway Center. This was a version of a ride I used to often. It took a while to shake off the soreness of rides earlier this week. I held a pace of a little over 20mph including stops for about the first hour. If accounting for traffic lights it would have been right at 20mph when I was done but the last 40 minutes front derailer problems again left me with only my middle chain ring. I guess it kept me from being tempted to push big gears. It's been nice this week to have been able to train like I used to but I'm back to working downtown again tommorow.

Bicycling (Road) 1:22:20 [3] 27.9 mi (2:57 / mi)
slept:4.5 weight:168.5lbs

Greenbelt, MD. From Ivy La., Kennilworth Ave. to Odell Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Duckettown Rd. to Highbridge Rd. to Fletchertown Rd. to Hillmead Rd. to Daisy La. to Rte. 193 to Northern Ave. to Good Luck Rd. to Springfield Rd. to Powder Mill Rd. to Kennilworth Ave. to Ivy La. I've been feeling some cummulative effects of recent rides. They bring back memories but I haven't trained enough to feel comfortable at the pace yet so I was tempted to take a day off. The Potomac Pedalers Wednesday Ride, once an old staple, was so close to my work meeting site that I couldn't resist. We cruised along with no one pushing the pace for long. I did more than my share of pulls and found it a lot easier than yesterday to keep the pace with the pack. Those w/computers said we averaged 20.8mph.

Bicycling (Road) 1:22:20 [4] 27.7 mi (2:58 / mi)
slept:4.0 weight:170lbs

From Sunnyside Ave. in Beltsville, MD., Kennilworth Ave. to Odell Rd. to Muirkirk Rd. to Rte. 197, to Old Bowie, up Fletchertown Rd., through Quill Point Dr. to Prospect Rd. to Rte. 193, to Northern Ave, to Good Luck Rd. to Beaverdam Rd. to Kennilworth Ave. to Sunnyside Ave. I rode from work after an off-site meeting. I immediately felt the soreness in my legs. It wore off as the heat and humidity did it's part. My cycle computer still is not working so I never knew how fast I was going until later. I never felt real strong and toward the end I felt hypoglycemic. It was nice cruising the old stomping grounds with all the nice roads to cycle on.

Bicycling (Road) 1:09:30 [4] 20.7 mi (3:21 / mi)
slept:6.1 weight:171.5lbs

From Rosedale Ave., East-West Hwy. to Connecticutt Ave. to Bradley Rd. to Brookeville Rd. to Nevada Ave. to Military Rd. to Glover Rd. to Beach Dr. to Grosvenor La. to Old Georgetown Rd. to Battery La. to Rosedale Ave. I felt some of my old speed and strength accelerating over hills and after stop lights/signs. The heat and humidity felt good rather than bad. Cruising up Beach Dr. felt agile and smooth--yeah! Time includes obligatory stops.

Bicycling (Mountain) 2:29:30 [3] 15.45 mi (9:41 / mi)
slept:6.0 weight:172.5lbs

Patapsco Park, MD. Rich Feliciano convinced me to go out mountain biking despite the recent rains. The trails were good; some roots were slippery. We got out early and beat the worst of the heat and steam. Creek crossings were nice and cool. We came down from Rolling Rd. and eventually did a loop in the Avalon area. It seems there is a lot of terrain that might be good for orienteering on the north side of the Patapsco River. We road across on the Swinging Bridge. My conditioning for this type of riding wasn't good but Rich kindly waited as I lumbered up hills and down the more technical spots. Rich also gave me some good tips on technique--don't slow so much on obstacles--momentum will help to carry me over, don't lock one knee going down--squeeze the seat with my legs evenly distributing weight on the pedals, when climbing w/full suspension stay seated and loosen my grip wiggling fingers on the handle bars--pull down when needed, not up. I feel I got increasingly better the further we rode. Lots of dirty fun.
