Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:52:57 [2] *** 5.25 km (21:31 / km)
spiked:13/13c slept:5.0 weight:170.5lbs

Patuxent River Park, MD. I set a mix of controls for Blue through White courses in the central portion of the park. Many of these had e-punches too. It was raining the whole time and slowly getting colder--mid to upper 40's F. As it was I had to wear a long sleeve t-shirt, an o-top, a goretex shell with a hood and my waterproof gloves--I still felt a bit cold. Much of the light green woods appeared to me to be better than what's called white woods in other parks.

Orienteering (Course Setting) 3:06:02 [2] *** 6.57 km (28:19 / km)
spiked:20/22c

Patuxent River Park, MD. I set out controls and e-punches for the southern part of the park. I had to walk much of the time with all the clothes, bags and e-punches in a backpack. It continued to get colder (about 42 F when I got through) but the rain tailed-off toward the end. The southern part of the park is really pretty and open. I hope we can have an A-meet and/or Night-O here someday. Apple Acorn plants, ferns and litte white flowers were found in abundance on the forest floors. Despite the rains, streams weren't the least bit muddy. I was headed to put out controls on a third loop when the park rangers told me the area was closed for the night (6:45pm).

Running (Street & Trail) 31:25 [3] 4.1 mi (7:40 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:170.5lbs

Glencarlyn Park in Arlington, VA. From Carlyn Springs Rd., Four Mile Run Trail to the Custis Trail to the Bluemont Junction Trail, to George Mason Dr. to and through Lubber Run to the Four Mile Run/W&OD Trail to Carlyn Springs Rd. On an errand to pickup e-punches from Valerie Meyer's house, Peggy, Max and I stopped off on the way there to take turns running and enjoying the mid-70's F Spring day. Though I felt a bit slow, this route had several steep hills. I recalled the many times I used to run through these neighborhoods years ago.

Calisthenics (General) 2:00 [3]
slept:5.25 weight:170.5lbs

45 situps. Once again I spent the time doing course setting preparation for the QOC Patuxent meet this weekend on my computer using OCAD and Clue. I think it's better to set courses on actual hard copy paper than a map image. I probably used too many controls and could eliminate some but now it's too late.

Running (Street & Trail) 39:31 [3] 5.35 mi (7:23 / mi)
slept:5.0 weight:170.5lbs

From Rockville Pike at Grosvenor Metro Station, through Strathmore Hall to Strathmore Ave. to the Rock Creek Trail, to Cedar Ave. through the Elmhirst Trail to Rockville Pike, to Jones Bridge Rd. to Maryland Ave. to Rosedale Ave. Peggy, Max and I picked-up the MD meet kit with the controls for the QOC Patuxent meet this weekend from the Onkst's and I ran back home. I felt sluggish. Half mile splits on the trail: 3:38, 3:36, 3:34.

Calisthenics (General) 3:00 [3]
slept:5.75 weight:169lbs (rest day)

Back home in Bethesda, MD, it was storming out after getting back home from work. I should have used the cycle trainer but instead took a while to finish putting together a rocking horse for Max. I ended-up doing 45 situps and 30 pushups, feeling stronger on the situps than I have for a while.

Running warm up/down (Street & Trail) 4:34 [2] 0.9 km (5:04 / km)
slept:6.5

East Fork State Park, OH. Warm-up from the meet HQ to the start. I was one of the last to get to the start having walked the parking lot playing and watching Max while Peggy ran.

Orienteering race (Foot) 1:12:55 [4] *** 7.6 km (9:36 / km) +360m 7:45 / km
spiked:14/18c

Flying Pig Classic Distance, East Fork State Park, OH. It was an interesting Red course. Most of the climb was in the first third. Most legs had good route choices. After the climbing there were treks across flat bland former farmland remincent of the recent Fair Hill meets in Maryland but with many more saplings, marsh and some thorns in the way to keep you from running fast. I planned a good route to #5, the crucial leg of the course but using memory rather than reading the map, I cut away in the wrong valley. I recovered from this without as great a loss of time as in the relay yesterday but made other slight bobbles at #8, #10, and #12. For #10, I had executed a route to a pond well then didn't take a good bearing to the control 70-80m away. For #12, I lost confidence in my correct bearing and let myself be drawn-off to another rootstock well short of the control. I finished second in +M45 again, behind the ever young Peter Gagarin. I think Pavalina had the fastest time on the course, almost 5 minutes ahead of my third fastest.
